Lower Hearson Farm Self Catering Holiday Cottages Lower Hearson Farm is a small family run farm set in fifteen acres of gardens, field and woodland.

We run the farm on a small scale aiming to be as self sufficient as possible in fruit, vegetables and meat. Depending on the time of year that you come here you will see life on a small farm with sheep, lambs and traditional breed chickens (Welsummer, Black Rock and Light Sussex). Guests are very welcome to help us at feeding times for the animals, help to collect the eggs and round up the chicke

ns when it is their bedtime. We are happy to share our experience with any visitors that are interested in living in as self sufficient a way as possible with tips ranging from looking after the animals to growing vegetables on a balcony (which is how we started). Tucked away in the heart of the North Devon countryside in a secluded valley full of wildlife, Lower Hearson Farm is perfect for a relaxing holiday. Our six self catering holiday cottages are surrounded by two acres of gardens making this a safe place for children and a peaceful haven for adults.

So happy that we discovered the wonderful Fresh Start For Hens and rehomed some adorable ex-commercial girls through them. The difference between the then and now photos is huge.

If you are thinking about getting chickens then definitely take a look at the rehoming dates and process. Everything was so well organised from first email right through to the collection at Holsworthy Fresh Start for Hens.

Being able to support these girls to live their best life has been an amazing experience. Our lives have been enriched just as much as theirs have 😍😍

There's always one who has to be different, and for once it wasn't Curly Wurly.

I love the fact that when all the sheep decided to escape the downpour there was just one girl who wanted to do her own thing and wasn't going to let a little bit (or even a lot) of rain stop her.

It occurred to me today that Snow is an absolute star and a real hit with all the guests and yet he hardly ever gets featured on facebook.....so..... here's Snow being his usual amazing self and just chilling and eating on the picnic table. To be fair, his whole life is pretty much about relaxing and eating so it's probably not a surprise that he's such a pro at it.

I challenged myself to find one photo on my phone that summed up May half-term at Lower Hearson.

I had expected it to be a picture of the pool or maybe families meeting Curly Wurly or children cuddling a guinea pig....but in the end it was this photo of carefully collected stones and leaves that caught my attention.

This sums up the childhood we wanted to give our son when we originally moved here and I love the fact that our younger guests also value the leaves, the sticks and the stones....the little things that connect them with the natural world and exploring the great outdoors. There's nothing wrong with screen time and family film nights are fantastic but I do love the fact that the children also get to enjoy nature and back to basics outdoor play while they are here.

That was a rather wonderful bank holiday - all 6 cottages booked with 7 fantastic families on site. Curly Wurly, Snow and Pickle had a particularly great time and enjoyed the fusses and snacks from everyone. 🐑🐖

The games room looks like a tornado hit it so we think that went down well with the kids! 🌪

Oh and I almost forgot the bonus for everyone.....we managed to get the pool open three weeks early to make the most of the stunning weather 🏊‍♀️🌞

If I was going to make a list of phrases I never thought I'd need to say then....."hey, sheep, stop licking that pig!!" would definitely have been on it 🤣

We love spending time with the sheep in our paddock. Some are confident enough to take food from your hand, others seem to pose for the camera and then there's the girl who is constantly misplacing her lamb and shouts at everyone until she spots it again. Clearly it's our fault that it's gone off playing with the other lambs!

Our Easter guests are in for a real treat... we have lambs in the paddock. I'm sure they will be the highlight of the animal feeding sessions as they are absolutely adorable 💕

One of our favourite places to visit is RHS Garden Rosemoor. We love watching the gardens change with the seasons - there's something to enjoy whether it's the depths of winter or a beautiful summer's day. We also love the fact that there are 2 fab play areas to enjoy 🛝 and the cafe serves some lovely cake 🍰

They are currently welcoming dogs on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the next 6 months as a trial 🐕

This is another great day out that's only a 30 minute drive from Lower Hearson and we know lots of our guests have enjoyed spending time here.

Tucked away in the heart of the North Devon countryside in a secluded valley full of wildlife, Lower Hearson Farm is perfect for a relaxing holiday. Our six self catering holiday cottages are surrounded by two acres of gardens making this a safe place for children and a peaceful haven for adults. Well behaved dogs are also welcome. As this is a working farm with livestock dogs must be kept under control at all times.
