Oh, what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practice to deceive.

A very familiar quote from Sir Walter Scott's epic poem Marmion, which ends with the Battle of Flodden.

Why not join me for a couple of hours on a Tuesday afternoon in May for a tour of Flodden Battlefield? The paths are looking much less soggy, there are busy farmers doing their thing and relaxing birdsong to enjoy. The history is quite good too.

Tickets bookable at www.floddenguidedwalks.co.uk

The Hirsel is a wonderful place to capture the essence of the new season. Looking fantastic as Spring shakes off the frosty mornings - wonderful woodland walks and coffee shop.
The Hirsel is a later residence of the Home family as Alexander, 3rd Lord Hume would have ridden to Flodden from nearby Hume Castle.

Who was the 20 year old, severely myopic Archbishop of St Andrews who was killed at the Battle of Flodden?
Alexander Stewart, illegitimate son of King James IV, was appointed Archbishop of St Andrew's when he was just 11, thus enabling his father to retain all the church revenue until his son was 27. However, it appears that young Alexander was being well trained for a lofty position in the church hierarchy. His tutor, Erasmus, wrote a very moving eulogy that is well worth reading.
St Andrews is a very cool place to visit. Really enjoyed my afternoon there today.

An ancient and majestic line of oak trees lead down from the Scottish positions on Branxton Hill to the 'boggy ground' below.
These beautiful old trees remind us of the great wooden ships that were part of the Flodden story. James IV sent his might ship, Great Michael, along with Scotland's most experienced gunners, to link up with the French fleet. Henry VIII's Mary Rose brought Sir Thomas Howard and 1000 troops to Newcastle upon Tyne on 2nd September 1513.
