It was because of the Scottish reformation that James IV's widow, Margaret Tudor, would not be able to rest in peace.
Queen Margaret died on 18th October 1541 and was buried at the Carthusian Priory of Perth Charterhouse. However, an anti idolatry sermon preached by John Knox on 11th May 1559 in St John's Kirk sent the local parishioners into a destructive frenzy. They destroyed Margaret's tomb and burned her remains.
John Knox's tenuous link to Flodden is that his first wife came from Norham, where her father was constable of the castle.

Commemorating the Battle of Flodden and remembering those who died from both nations on that bloody day over 500 years ago is part of the rhythm of Border's life. Almost 200 horses and riders make their way from Coldstream to Branxton, hold a short service at the Flodden Memorial and then gallop up Branxton Hill. An amazing sight to see or be part of.
