Did you know?
Bexhill hosted the first international motor racing event.

19th May 1902
It was on Monday 19 May 1902 that British Motor Racing was born in Bexhill-on-Sea. The 8th Earl De La Warr had encouraged the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland to organise the ‘Great Whitsuntide Motor Races’.

With business interests in the tyre-making firm Dunlop, the Earl was led to create a Bicycle Boulevard on the seafront in 1896, which stretched from the Sackville Hotel in the west to Galley Hill in the east.

He turned this bicycle track into a one-kilometre motor racing course in 1902 as, being his own private land, it was exempt from the national speed limit of 12 miles per hour.

Just 45 minutes along the coast you will find Brighton. A big reason that Brighton is so different from other seaside town are its people.

Creative minds? Artsy, liberal and open-minded? That’s what Brightonians are. The eclectic mix of interesting people and alternative lifestyles gives the town a distinct character.

Brighton is also known for an overall less money-driven and laid-back lifestyle than nearby London, for example. The vibe here is relaxed, stress-free and there is an ever-present feel of vacation in the air.

Brighton is one of England's most famous seaside resorts, but if you're unsure if you should visit Brighton, here's what to do in Brighton and why I love it

Did you know?

Bexhill beaches were the first in the UK to offer mixed bathing.
Saucy!

A day at Bexhill Beach is time well spent,

Backed by a long promenade, this mostly shingle beach does offer up some sandy sections when the tide's out, ensuring the kids can get in some sandcastle building as well as safe splashing about in the shallow, clean water.

There's also plenty of room to spread out, so bring a blanket and a beach umbrella and enjoy a fun family picnic. Alternatively, grab some tasty treats from any one of the beachfront kiosks or cafés.

Popular water sports activities include sailing, rowing, paddleboarding, and windsurfing. Kayaking and jet skiing are also popular, and local equipment rental companies can set you up with everything needed to get out on the water.

Did you Know?

Almost 70 years ago the Rother Valley Way (Petersfield to Midhurst railway line) closed.

A newspaper headline at the time read “Branch rail line to be torn up. No future plans, says railway authority, but open to ‘bright ideas’.”

Unfortunately, none were put forward at the time, but fast forward to today and there is news of an exciting plan to turn this 9-mile stretch of former railway line into an accessible, shared-use, traffic-free path connecting the two market towns on either side of the Hampshire Sussex border.

Plans to turn Rother Valley Railway (was once described as “among the most beautiful lines in England) into a multi purpose country track

From Voyagers Rest, take a short walk into Bexhill Old Town.

This picturesque area of Bexhill is home to some fine examples of Georgian architecture and some of town's fascinating attractions.

Ancient St Peter's Church originates from Saxon times and the ruins of the Manor House in Manor Gardens are a beautiful reminder of the area's 13th Century roots. Wander around the Old Town's wide streets and take in its charm with timber-framed buildings.

Believe it or not, the tiny and picturesque East Sussex village of Rye was once one of south-east England’s most important ports.

These days it’s difficult to see much of the bustling trading hub that Rye was in the Middle Ages, but the place retains much of the historic charm as well as many of the tales of smuggling and maritime conflict of those bygone days.

Over the years Rye has transformed into a hip and happening sort of seaside getaway destination. Its rich history, gorgeous buildings and traditional-style pubs are now boosted by quirky shops, swanky cafés, trendy restaurants.

Visit Historic Hastings and all it has to reveal
Just a 10 minute drive from

Hastings is unique in the fact that it is steeped in culture and history but simultaneously boasts highly modern, cosmopolitan aspects. The old world charm of the Old Town contrasts with the cutting edge Jerwood Gallery which sits rather incongruously by the fisherman's old maritime boat shed.

Architectural treasures such as Hastings Castle and the old time smugglers' tunnels are in sharp contrast to the stylish newly established array of businesses such as artisan bakeries, upmarket delicatessens and fine dining.

The diversity of the area is such that you’re likely to discover some fantastic vintage and antique shops next door to a hipster-esque craft beer.

The continual surprises and revelations of Hastings, with its fascinating mixture of old and new or tradition and innovation, makes it a most satisfying location to spend some time.

St Leonards on Sea seems to be a mecca for cool shops and places to eat. If you can tear yourself away from the beach and the beachfront cafés, as well as the quirky architecture, there’s a town centre that is colourful, slightly bohemian and full of style.

From art galleries and vintage shops, to street foo d and street art and long stretches of beach, St Leonards in East Sussex has a boho vibe
