It’s World Entrepreneur Day!

Owning your own business is incredibly tough as much as it is rewarding. There is no switching off and only yourself to ensure that your earnings are enough for your outgoings. You are responsible for accounts, marketing, recruitment as well as the on-going training and self-development.

When you book a holiday on line, that website does not care if it is the right holiday for you, it does not care if you have questions, need restaurant or excursion recommendations and if things go wrong, it does not care, you are on your own.

As my own business, I really care, if you are not happy, then you will not return and my business fails. If things go wrong, I fight hard to make things right. When you book a holiday with me, I really do care and I do that little happy dance every time someone books with me!

My journey as a Travel Counsellor started in 2020 – the worst possible time, some would say. However, for me, it meant I had time to really ensure I was up to speed when travel returned and immerse myself in the training and self-development. I had bought another TC business and I had those clients to look after, ensure their holidays were amended, refunded, re-routed – whatever it took!

When travel came back with a BOOM, those clients remembered what I had done for them and they in turn remained loyal and most continue to do so.

I cannot tell you how much I value the loyalty I have received. In turn, I always try to support local business and friends. If I have a friend who is a decorator, then that person decorates my house, if my friend is a taxi driver – that is who I use and recommend to my friends, if I need stationery, I will use my local printer – this is how we can support each other and in turn, the families that the income supports.

Prior to my life in travel, I was very much in the corporate world, working for large organisations both in sales training and account management. I was very fortunate to work for some of the best organisations and the training I received has been invaluable, as those skills are most definitely transferrable to running my own business.

I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel to many destinations and travel has always been a huge part of my life. Running my own travel business was always something I was going to do, however the reality of leaving a regular salary is daunting. I knew the timing was right when I became frustrated with the corporate world, the layers of decision making, coupled with lack of entrepreneurial opportunity. I needed to take the plunge and work for myself, I always worked too hard to give someone else that benefit.

I made the best decision ever, my only regret is not doing it years earlier. I love what I do, I never holiday, now I TRAVEL, always looking for new resorts, destinations, anything to make my clients experiences better. No, it is not easy juggling your own business with family life, however, it gives me the flexibility to be at sports day, parents evening and to share my travel experiences with my family.
