For those hitting the ocean and waves this summer.
This is really simple. You can spot a rip current. Unfortunately, it's where it looks easiest and safest to enter the sea. This is because the rip current is looping around and pulling back OUT. Hence no waves rolling IN. NEVER ENTER THE SEA HERE. If you are already in the sea and get caught in a rip current (you'll know because you will suddenly be moved from your location and it will be impossible to swim against it) don't panic. Swim ACROSS, not against the rip current. For example, rather than trying to swim to shore while being pushed out, swim parallel to the beach and you will be able to get out. Then you can swim ashore. Please educate friends or family visiting the beaches this summer. Stay safe ❤️

Salad plates in the sunshine! Moroccan inspired cous cous, potato & chive salad, tahini & lemon garlic mushrooms, beetroot & apple & walnut salad, mixed leaves and toasted seeds - it’s a good one today!

🌸🌼🌺 Happy May Day everyone! 🌸🌼🌺

Padstow May Day is one of Cornwall’s oldest and most interesting traditions. The festival takes place on 1st May every year (unless this is a Sunday, which means celebrations move to the 2nd).

At the centre of May Day are the Padstow ’Obby ’Osses. These are round creatures meant to represent actual horses. There are two ’Osses: The Red (Old) ’Oss and the Blue (Peace) ’Oss. Both dance through the streets of Padstow, joined by ’Oss parties. Each party takes it in turns to dance in front of their beast, which is known as teasing. Traditionally, people wear white clothes with red or blue to show which ’Oss they support.

On the day, the streets of Padstow fill with people and buildings are decorated with greenery. Many feature young sycamore, which is associated with spring.

During the daytime celebrations, the “Day Song” is sung. The words and tune are unique to Padstow and represent the coming of summer and the history of this Cornish town. In the chorus the ’Oss symbolically dies, falling to the floor while the teaser tries to revive him. At the end of the chorus the ’Oss leaps back to life, madly dancing into the crowd. Towards the close of the celebrations, the ’Osses are put away while their followers sing a song starting with the words “Farewell, farewell my own true love”.

🦭 Very sad news.
🦭 Ray was a superstar seal who saw thousands of kids grow up.
RIP Ray.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dearest Ray.

It is never easy to lose one of our family but with Ray it is especially difficult. He was such a big character and meant so much to all of us here at the Sanctuary, and we know that you all adored him just as much. 🩷

In the last month Ray required several procedures for a historical condition and although he was making slow improvements, unfortunately, he did not recover as well as we had hoped. Despite huge efforts from the team and our veterinary support sadly it wasn’t enough, and he passed away on Sunday evening.

Ray was rescued by the Sanctuary back in 2001 at just a few weeks old. He was such a character from the moment he entered our hospital. Looking back through his hospital records there are comments like ‘there’s something different about Ray’, and there certainly was! We often referred to Ray as a little ‘goofy’ because he always appeared to have a little smile on his face.

But it was his pure, happy, trusting heart that shone through to all, he was totally and utterly our Ray of sunshine, and for us, the Sanctuary certainly won’t be the same without him.

This week we will be setting up a ‘In celebration of Ray’ display in our Under Water Viewing area at the Sanctuary, where we will be sharing our wonderful memories of Ray. We’d love you to visit us to say goodbye and celebrate his life.

Heads up that it’s drinks and cake takeaway only from 3.30 today and we will be then closing a little early due to the youngest snail turning 6 (can you believe it!?) - you also may want to avoid the invasion of overexcited 5 & 6 yr olds headed this way at that time….

🌺 The Lost Gardens of The Lost Gardens of Heligan are a 45 minute drive from our place. Well worth the journey. Open all year, it’s a breathtaking landscape that feels quite tropical even in the heart of winter!
