This year Bradford-on-Avon Lions invested in a reusable fabric poppy wreath. It was made for us by Sarah New, after a discussion about plastics, and we're very happy with it! Lions Hilary, Judy, Phil, Brian and Lynn are here with it before it was laid on Sunday. Come and have a look if you are passing the war memorial.

Obviously, we made the usual donation to the RBL - this wasn't an economy measure - and will continue to do so in future years. All donations and financial support that we give can be seen on our website www.boalions.org.uk, under Community Service.

We are now accepting nominations (close date 30 September) for these awards, open to young people aged 15-18 in Bradford on Avon and the surrounding villages. Outstanding Young Person Award - 2024!

As you may know, if you see our posts frequently (if not, follow us and you will :)) the Lions give awards each year to young people aged between 15 and 18. These prizes are actual spendable money, as well as the recognition that someone has seen their achievements as something exceptional and taken the trouble to nominate them.

As Lions, we love to look through the nominations, telling us about the amazing stuff that young people in our community are doing, and we find it really hard to pick winners. Nominations are now open for 2024 - please, if you work or volunteer in any capacity with young people in this age group, make our lives even harder and make a nomination. We'd like 2024 to be the year that we get more nominations than ever before!

To make a nomination, go to our website www.boalions.org.uk and click on the form link. Deadline is 30th September 2024.

At the Lions July meeting, two of our long-standing members were presented with Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards. These are significant to the Lions, named after the founder, and representing service to the community way beyond just length of tenure, although both of these Lions have certainly given that.

Keith Yates has been a Lion for over 30 years, has served as President in the past, and as Secretary for an incredible 20 years. He leads on setting up and running the Fun Day every year and is always involved in everything we do, whether it's walking miles supporting the Santa Float or instigating our annual Arts and Crafts sale and exhibition (now the Choirs, Crafts, Coffee and Cake day). He's also a wonderfully smiling, welcoming face to new Lions and a genuine friend to everyone.

Brian Hersee's support for the Lions and the community of Bradford on Avon and surrounding villages is outstanding and amazing. With 40 years of service, including as President and as a long-term Treasurer, he has had a hand in everything we do. Many people will know him for his support of the car boot sale, but for all his visibility on the day, he does many hours more work behind the scenes to make this event the success that is. He's an acute listener in meetings, and fantastic for digging down into ideas to give them the best possible chance to succeed.

Both awards were presented by President Mike Sullivan with our thanks for the service that Keith and Brian have given and continue to give.

In July the Lions met at The Boathouse in Bradford on Avon for Sunday lunch, and to celebrate one of the major social events in our year. This was Handover - when the outgoing president hands over to the incoming president. This year, Phil Courage handed the reins (and the gavel and the chain of office) to Mike Sullivan. Phil was given a yearbook of photos, recording this last year with the Lions, which was a lovely memento to have.

Mike will be familiar to lots of people in the area as he taught at St Laurence for many years. He's a comparatively recent Lion, but has got stuck in and brought huge enthusiasm and energy to everything he's involved with.

Thank you very much to Phil for (yet another) year of leading the Lions and to Mike for taking this on for the first time. Good luck to Mike, handling this pride of Lions, who always have an opinion, and all believe passionately in the value of giving back to our local community! We're all with you in this.

Last Saturday we held the second of our annual Choirs, Crafts, Coffee and Cakes events at Holy Trinity Church. It was a wonderfully successful day as a community event and as a fundraiser. Several choirs performed in the afternoon, and Deryn played the piano in the morning. There was a constant supply of cakes, many freshly home-made by Lions and Lions' families (including a Lion grandson - his ginger cake was particularly complimented).

Like many of our events, this was a fundraiser. Most of the money we raise goes back to projects and individuals in need of support in Bradford on Avon and the surrounding villages. This day raised over £1000 which will make a huge difference.

For all those people who signed Gift Aid declarations on the day - an extra thank you. Gift Aid added £122 to the money raised on the day but also unlocked an incredible £1220 on donations from previous events. As an example of what this can do, we have recently planted trees near the river at a cost of £1,080, given £250 to St Laurence School to support students with special educational needs and spent £240 to give a set of books on environmental topics to six local primary schools.

If you'd like to be involved in making decisions on what the money we raise is given to, or to help raise it, why not consider joining us? We're very friendly and always open to new members. Contact us via our website, Facebook or talk to any of the Lions.

With two days to go, the Lions are breaking out the baking kit and the choirs are getting ready! There's also lots of lovely crafted things being created, packed and got ready to bring.

Do come and have a browse, a buy and a listen on Saturday! If it's hot outside, the church is cool, and if it's raining, we'll be dry inside!

We still have a few *selling spaces* left for crafters at our event on 13 July! £15 for the day for a table; a roof (and what a roof!) over your head, a constant stream of people coming through, tea, coffee and cake right next to you and lovely music to listen to as well - what better way to sell your products?

The next event from BoA Lions is our Choirs, Crafts, Coffee and Cakes day at Holy Trinity Church. After a fantastic day last year, this is the second time we've run this event in its revamped form. We've kept the wonderful crafts on sale from local makers, the coffee and the cakes, but we've got live choirs singing all day. Come to listen to a friend, or with a friend, but don't miss it!

Our June meeting ended with a celebration and a goodbye... Richard Bloom, after 40 years of service to the community through the Lions, is taking a step back. He's not going far though, and will remain a friend in every sense!

We're so grateful to him for everything he has done, far too much to list, and including over 10 years as Treasurer, and wrangling the highly complicated Santa route and rota on an annual basis. We're going to miss you, Richard!

It was a lovely day at the Fun Day today (rain? Really 😁☔️) but I forgot to take photos! The only one I took is here... somebody taking advantage of the Hook a Duck duck pond! If you've got any photos from today that you could share with us, please share them in the comments, we'd love to see them!

Great to see so many people today - thank you for coming and supporting us, and for having fun!

Fun Day opens at 11, and the fun starts right away.

There will be disabled parking on the field for Blue Badge holders.

Scheduled post (because I'll be down at the field helping to make it happen) - fingers crossed that it's sunny when this posts. Even if it's rainy, we'll still be there; I hope you will be too!

What are your plans for Bank Holiday Monday? We'll all be at Culver Close for the Lions Annual Family Fun Day (except the ones who'll be next door at Victory Field running the Car Boot Sale from a distressingly early hour).

This is always a great event, with loads going on, and plenty to keep kids happy for hours. It's also a fundraiser, and the money that we raise gets put back into our community, spent on projects like the skatepark, tree planting, environmental books for primary-school aged children and lots more. Come and support a good cause and have a great time while you're doing it!

Fingers crossed for sunshine, but we'll be there, whatever the weather! Come and see us - it's free to enter and there's loads to do.
