The Wriggly Tin, Peak District

The Wriggly Tin, Peak District Unique holiday home in the Peak District. Sleeps 9. Renovated & run by Karen and Peter Barlow
(17)

Our beautiful and quirky luxury holiday home was formally the Wriggly Tin Cafe and has been lovingly rebuilt to a very high standard. We provide Peak District holiday accommodation for large groups of up to 9 people in spacious and comfortable surroundings. Much of the original appearance has been retained and with wonderful features of vaulted ceilings, hardwood and sandstone floors, under floor

heating throughout, quality furnishings and a glowing log burning stove all make this a very special place. We are situated between Bakewell and Buxton, in the picturesque village of Millers Dale, where there are numerous walks or cycle rides directly from the doorstep (on the Monsal Trail!), and a friendly local pub serving real ales and a village church. Nearby Tideswell has a small selection of local village shops and pubs. We are positioned perfectly for total tranquility yet are centrally located for exploring all the sites of the Peak District. We extend a very warm welcome to you and are sure that you and your family or friends will relax and enjoy yourselves at this stunning location.

Thank you so much to Sharon for this review on Airbnb, it was a pleasure to have you to stay back in September!

One of the most important things to us when we opened the Wriggly Tin was that it would be a home-from-home. We try to include all of the things that you might use at home for a bring people together - from plenty of tea towels to boardgames. And you’ll always be welcomed with homemade flapjack and a big bar of Cadbury’s chocolate!

In its heyday the LMS Monsal Railway brought hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Peak District and Millers Dale was a key junction between Manchester and London.

For many people, Millers Dale was a gateway to the Peaks and when Thomas Cook established organised rail excursions you could buy your ticket, taxi and your accommodation all together - including staying at the Wriggly Tin!

George Vickers and Alice Vickers ran the Refreshment Rooms and Hansom service at the Wriggly Tin. They lived at Dale View with their daughter Helen, cook Ellen and nursemaid Alice and had 3 ‘cabs’ and up to 6 horses who lived beneath the Wriggly Tin.

During our work on the house we’ve found lots of harnesses, horseshoes and the evidence of stables and from the Census we know that as well as cabs, George also offered stabling for those who had ridden to the station and a Hansom Cab service to nearby villages.

🛌 Take a tour…

We sleep 9 people in the Wriggly Tin, 10 if you have a little one in the cot and 11 if you squeeze in a dog - so it’s a fairly big family affair.

There are plenty of games in the toy box and little nooks that are perfect for building dens. So even on rainy days, or snowy ones like today, you can still have plenty of adventures indoors.

🫖 Lots of people who come to stay remember the Wriggly Tin as a cafe. When it was first built in 1866 part of the building was ‘Dale View Refreshment Rooms’ and welcomed visitors from the railway.

Karen and Peter took over the cafe and house in 1991 and ran it until 2001. In 2001 the Peak District closed for business to tourists as foot and mouth caused devastation to many of our local farms and businesses.

The cafe couldn’t be sustained with such a drop in trade and it was closed. With the tunnels reopening and the Monsal Trail now attracting over 300,000 visitors each year, there’s a chance that a cafe would have been successful but the Wriggly Tin is already far down its newest chapter as a holiday home.

🌧️ It’s a dreary old day in the Peak District but if you’ve been paddling in the puddles then the sitting by the fire is the perfect place to dry out!

Although we have underfloor heating throughout the Wriggly Tin, we still love having an open fire to make the living room super cosy.

The Wriggly Tin from the skies! ❄️

A big thank you to our friend Joe who took this photo of the Wriggly Tin back in early December when we had the first snow of the winter.

It’s amazing to see how close we really are the Monsal Trail!

It’s a 5km traffic free walk (or cycle) from our front door to .monsal and we couldn’t think of a more perfect reason to get outside during the festive break.

Hobbs Cafe overlooked the iconic Headstone Viaduct on the Monsal Trail. In the last year it has changed loads and we’ve enjoyed lots of things off the new menu - including these amazing Christmas cruffins!

I have seen similar images to this one, but they are mostly in black & white, this one on colour seems to show everything more clearly. Millers Dale station was first opened in 1863, was upgraded in 1905 and closed to passengers during 1967. The Wriggly Tin was a probably still a cafe when this image was taken.

At The Wriggly Tin we are trying to reduce our plastic usage as much as possible, so in our bathrooms we now have refillable bottles for our Bodywash, Shampoo & Conditioner for our guests to use.

We have chosen products from a local firm called MINIML, their products are all Eco- Friendly. When we have decanted the 5 litre cartons we send them back to Miniml to be refilled. 🫶
