Have you ever looked into Carlisle’s Civil War history? 🧐
During the English Civil War Carlisle was one of very few places in the north that held out for the king after the defeat of his main northern army at Marston Moor, in July 1644. ⚔️
That October a Parliamentarian army quickly surrounded the city with guns and earthworks, and settled down to starve the city out.
In the following spring they were joined by English troops, and their grip on the city became tighter. Food started to run out, with people eventually resorting to eating rats! 🐀
After the Royalist defeat at the Battle of Naseby in June 1645, there seemed no more hope of relief, and on the 25th of June the city eventually surrendered.
Cumbria Dark Skies Festival returns 🌃
The annual Cumbria Dark Skies Festival is back for 2024 (25 October – 24 November) celebrating the county’s fantastic stargazing opportunities, helping to extend the visitor season and offer immersive experiences to a wide audience.
The 2023 festival saw a reach of over 24 million, and there’s still time to get involved and host an event this year. All events will be listed on a dedicated dark skies page, along with supporting festival promotion to help spread the word. What an incredible night. I have never seen such a strong display of the Northern Lights in the UK before. Clearly visible to the naked eye. It was mind blowing!
It is late, I have work in the morning but I couldn't resist one more quick edit. This is shot from the lake side at Keswick looking down Derwentwater towards Borrowdale Valley.

Why do I find the strangest things interesting. A dig in Carlisle found Tyrian Purple stone. During the Roman times it was 3 x more expensive than gold. It is made from the saliva of a certain sea snail. It is a rare find in the UK.
