During our SA holiday last year we visited Masiphumelele, a township outside Cape Town with @insta_ingram from @escapeexplore. I wanted our kids to experience the many different sides to Africa & I knew that with Ingram, we would get a genuine insight as he works closely with the township. We took donations of books, toys and clothes with us Masimphumelele Creative Hub and day care centre spent a wonderful afternoon with the founder and energy-ball Mama Yandi, listening to her incredible life story and playing with the kids in the centre. Mama Yandi had started off penniless and picking up plastic off the beach, which then became the materials for artwork. This gradually took off and as she started employing women to help her; however, they had nowhere to send their kids whilst they were working. Out of the proceeds from her art, Mama Yandi ended up building a day care centre for those children and others from the township. The day we returned home Milo (then aged 10) said he wanted to do a school presentation about Mama Yandi and her story. His class was so interested that a partnership was initiated between Milo’s school and the township primary school for them to learn about their different countries. (Sadly, due to lockdown this hasn’t yet been possible). When my children considered the challenges facing Mama Yandi and her community during lockdown Milo, Oscar and Ella took it upon themselves to raise money to help; saving their pocket money and doing various jobs around the house. They earned enough money to buy soap and masks for 400 kids and feed 1500 children for two days. Mama Yandi’s positive influence was being felt on the other side of the world! Travel (and those we meet along the way) not only brings a wealth of experiences; it also inspires some of life’s most important and lasting lessons 💫 #thepoweroftravel #travelstories #travelinspiration
