Corby Town Council Budget Consultation Opens

Corby Town Council is asking residents to take part in setting the spending priorities for the town into 2025-26 and beyond as its Budget Consultation is now open.

An event on December 17 in Corby Town Centre will seek to promote this as well as giving residents an opportunity to donate to the town’s Foodbank.

The event on Tuesday between 10.00am and 2.00pm is at Corporation Street, with the support of Willow Place. Councillors and staff will use a market stall space to collect Foodbank donations as well as giving residents the opportunity to fill a questionnaire on the Budget Consultation.

We will also be joined between 10.00am and 11.00am by the Citizens Advice Bureau who will give information and advice on various issues. Between 11.00am and 1.00pm we will be joined by Groundwork Northamptonshire, who will promote their Green Doctor service that gives advice and support on energy saving in the home.

Since its inception in 2021, Corby Town Council has provided free to attend events, grants to a wide range of community groups in the town, continued the Mayoral office and worked alongside organisations who aim to improve the lives of the people of Corby.

Corby Town Council has several budget pressures which it is aware of and for which we need to plan. These include taking on the overseeing of allotment sites which will mean investment and increased running costs. More details can be found at the Budget Consultation online link, which can be found at www.corbytowncouncil.gov.uk

The 17 Town Councillors receive no payment for their role. The Town Council has the Mayoral insignia and the Corby crest and are working hard to build the profile of the town, keep events for the town happening and enhance the lives of people in Corby.

Chair of the Finance Committee at Corby Town Council, Cllr Simon Rielly, said:
“We have outlined priorities in our budget and the pressures we face. We now ask that residents give us their views by taking part in this consultation. We would also love to see residents at our event on December 17 where we can gather views and take donations to support Corby Foodbank at this special time of year.”

The consultation closes on January 16, 2025.

Those in need within local community to benefit from generous donations

A collection held by a Corby estate agent to raise much needed goods for Corby Homeless Project has proven to be a huge success.

Held throughout November to mark National Homelessness Awareness month, Belvoir Corby’s collection at their George Street office saw donations stream through the doors. The food and household items donated will be used to help support those most vulnerable in the community.

“When we discovered that at least 1,327 people were homeless in Northamptonshire in 2023, we felt compelled to do something to help those in need in the local area,” explains Martine Crawford, branch manager, Belvoir Corby.

“That’s why we were proud to support Corby Homeless Project and the work they do by using our offices as a donation station during National Homelessness Awareness month.

“The response to our call for donations was fantastic and really showed the goodwill and kind-hearted spirit of Corby people.”

Corby Homeless Project support those facing the most challenges when it comes to housing. It provides 24-7 support for its residents, who can stay for up to two years, and will be putting the donations raised to good use: “It truly is mind-blowing how generous the people of Corby are,” said Georgina Henson, Homeless Project Lead, Corby Homeless Project. “Many of our residents are on Universal Credit and the items donated will go a long way to helping them.

“Not only have we received donations of food, which will help ensure that none of our residents go hungry but we also received three sleeping bags. These are valuable items which will be distributed to those sleeping rough, alongside a selection of miniature toiletries that were also kindly donated.

“Every donation made really will help, so we are incredibly grateful to Belvoir Corby for thinking of us by arranging this collection.”

Freddie and Florrie Light Up Corby at Christmas Market

Christmas has arrived in Corby following the Tree-Switch On and Market that took place near the Cube.

On Friday November 29th, James Ashworth VC Square and Corporation Street were transformed into a seasonal setting, with local traders offering festive gifts alongside local entertainment.

The undoubted highlight was Florrie and Freddie Bark from Team Be More Fab doing the honour of lighting the Christmas Tree. They told the crowd how happy they were with the support Corby has given their charity, which is dedicated to supporting children through the challenges of cancer.

There were live performances of Christmas carols and songs by Chordless Corby and the student choir of Kingswood Secondary Academy, and the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk at The Core mingled with the crowd along with festively dressed stilt-walkers.

Santa Claus was in attendance thanks to Corby and District Lions while Made With Many helped families create seasonal crafts and Corby Amateur Theatrical Society promoted their upcoming production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”.

Massive Hits Radio provided the PA for the day and the Neighbourhood Police Beat Bus, Lakelands Hospice and North Northants First Responders were also among those to take part.

The event was organised by Corby Town Council, supported by Corby town centre operators Willow Place. Corby Town Council have installed the tree with support from North Northamptonshire Council.

Leader of Corby Town Council, Cllr Mark Pengelly, said: "I am so pleased the Town Council with support from partners could put on such a brilliant event. Our thanks to the people of Corby for getting in the festive spirit, all the traders and contributors for taking part and to the stars of the show, Florrie and Freddie, who lit up the town. Merry Christmas!”

Community called on to help support winter food collection in aid of local foodbank this Christmas

A local foodbank is set to benefit from a winter food collection being held at Tesco Extra on St James Road, Corby from Thursday 28th-Saturday 30th November.
A donation station will be set up in store for Corby Foodbank as part of Tesco’s national, annual event, which takes place to support charities Fareshare and Trussell to help provide food essentials to people in the local community this Christmas time.

Part of Trussell, an anti-poverty charity and community of food banks, Corby Foodbank will use the donations collected to distribute three-day emergency, non-perishable food parcels to local people in food crisis.

In 2023, the Foodbank supported 3,500 people in Corby and surrounding villages – a 20% increase rate, year on year. And with winter often being the busiest time of year in its operation, Corby Foodbank’s manager, Martin Langford, says that any donations will be gratefully received: “We really appreciate Tesco Extra organising this collection for us, particularly at this time of year,” said Martin Langford, manager at Corby Foodbank.

“They were also kind enough to support us in 2023, with donations from that collection totalling 561.60kg, which was amazing.

“Everyone deserves to enjoy some Christmas spirit and I know the donations we receive this year will help make a big difference to so many families in Corby and surrounding areas this Christmas time.”

All items can be donated in store at the Tesco Extra on St James Road, Corby until Saturday 30th November.
Donations that are most in need are:
- Soup
- Spaghetti in sauce

Celebrating the Impact of IFtL Youth Parliament at the Conclusion of UK Youth Parliament Week

As UK Youth Parliament Week comes to a close, Inspiring Futures through Learning (IFtL) takes pride in recognising the outstanding work carried out by its Youth Parliament. This year’s cohort, comprising a diverse and passionate group of pupils from all sixteen IFtL schools based in Corby and Milton Keynes, has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to addressing key issues that resonate with their communities.

Meeting six times throughout the academic year, the IFtL Youth Parliament has focused on three pivotal themes: sustainability, democracy, and exploring “Who are IFtL?” Each theme highlights the pupils' drive to effect meaningful change within their schools and beyond.
The first meeting of this year’s Youth Parliament took place at one of the IFtL's schools ST Mary St Giles church of England school in Stony Stratford, setting the stage for a year of innovative ideas and lively discussions. The enthusiasm among pupils was palpable, as representatives expressed excitement about returning to their schools to engage their peers and drive community involvement.

Sustainability has been a key focus, with pupils developing creative initiatives to promote environmentally conscious practices in their schools. Projects have included enhancing recycling programs and launching awareness campaigns about energy conservation.
Democracy has also been a fundamental part of their mission, with members learning about the importance of representation and voice. By advocating for their peers and organising activities that encourage pupil participation, they have ensured that everyone has a voice in school and community matters. while exercising their rights, Pupils exercised their democratic right to vote on a measure aimed at promoting energy efficiency within their schools. The resolution they collectively endorsed was that digital display screens in their respective classrooms shall automatically transition to an inactive state after a period of 15 minutes of idleness, thereby contributing to the conservation of energy resources.

The theme of “Who are IFtL?” has encouraged pupils to deepen their understanding of the organisation’s core values, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose across all IFtL schools. Through collaborative efforts and open communication, pupils have reinforced the principles and IFtL values aligning them to those of their schools.

The commitment of the IFtL Youth Parliament to these themes not only enriches the educational environment but also prepares students as young leaders ready to champion important causes far beyond their school years. Their enthusiasm and determination to bring about positive change exemplify the very essence of student leadership.

“I am incredibly proud of the work done by our Youth Parliament,” said Sarah Bennett, CEO of IFtL. “Their dedication to creating a positive, lasting impact within their schools and communities embodies the spirit of leadership and collaboration that we strive to nurture in all our pupils, as an organisation we are committed to our responsibility in shaping and influencing the lives of future generations.”

Phili Jones, an employee involved in these initiatives and a passionate advocate for reducing food waste, added, “Seeing the pupils take the lead in sustainability projects, especially those focusing on reducing food waste and promoting mindful consumption, has been truly inspiring. Their creativity and commitment provide hope for a more sustainable future.”

As UK Youth Parliament Week concludes, IFtL looks forward to seeing the continued influence and achievements of the Youth Parliament throughout the academic year and beyond.

New Speed Cameras to Improve Road Safety

Corby Town Council is supporting the installation of new speed cameras throughout key areas in our community, aimed at reducing speeding and enhancing road safety for all residents.

This initiative is in partnership with North Northamptonshire Council and is part of an ongoing commitment to creating safer streets and protecting pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

The new advanced speed camera systems will be strategically placed in high-traffic zones, and in areas frequently flagged for speeding violations.

These state-of-the-art cameras utilise technology to accurately monitor vehicle speeds from both directions and capture speed of violators, ensuring that everyone complies with the posted speed limits.

Cllr Simon Rielly (Oakley) said: “Safety is our top priority, and these new speed cameras are a crucial step toward achieving that goal. By enforcing speed limits more effectively, we can reduce the number of dangerous incidents on our roads, making our neighbourhoods safer for families and children.”

Data shows that speed-related incidents account for a significant percentage of injuries and fatalities on our roads. By implementing these new cameras, the local authorities are working in partnership by taking proactive measures to deter speeding and promote responsible driving behaviour.

When the cameras’ locations are moved, Corby Town Council will look to inform the community through social media.

The speed cameras began monitoring earlier this month and the data collected will be regularly reviewed to assess their effectiveness and further improve road safety measures.
