Another wonderful course with the most amazing scenery you will ever see this course is one of many easily accessible from Derry/Londonderry. The drive over through Glenveagh National Park was absolutely stunning.
Cruit Island is considered by some to be one of the best 9-hole golf courses in the world. It is certainly one of the most scenic courses in Ireland. Overlooking Arranmore and Owey Islands and with Mount Errigal as a backdrop, Cruit (pronounced Crutch) is located near Kincasslagh in The Rosses, County Donegal. Tucked away in this north west corner of County Donegal, this is about as far off the beaten track as you can get when searching for a “hidden gem” course.
The nine holes of Cruit Island were only created in 1986 (by Michael Doherty, the professional at City of Derry Golf Club) but they feel like they have been in play for many years more with their wild and windswept look. The views from the cliff tops are simply stunning and the sound of the sea is ever present as the Atlantic crashes relentlessly on the rocks below – this is raw, elemental golf from a bygone era played in a new century.

Today we traveled north to the stunning Ballyliffen Golf club. Rory McIlroy has said that for “anyone planning a golf trip to the north of Ireland, the two courses at Ballyliffin are must play championship links”.
Ballyliffin Golf Club is a links course situated just outside Ballyliffin village, close to the northernmost tip of Ireland, about 30 miles north of Derry.
Boasting two championship links courses, Ballyliffin Old Golf Club is known in some circles as the “Dornoch of Ireland”, while the Old Course at Ballyliffin has long been regarded as the ultimate hidden gem.
Famous for its spectacular features and views over the Atlantic Ocean, Ballyliffin presents a great challenge for any golfer. The layout has undulating greens and rolling fairways and is renowned for its enormous bunkers both greenside and on the fairway.

The course runs in clockwise direction, out bounds on left 1st, 2nd, 6th, 8th, 10th, 13th and 18th. greens are well protected bunkers, streams natural sand dunes all coming into play. Redesigned by Pat Ruddy 6,472 metres par-72 standard scratch 73.
Tucked away on the northern shores of Lough Swilly, Knockalla Mountains provide a stunning backdrop. Linked with heather clad hills, they shield and semi circle links, creating stage-like effects. Add glistering waters those golden sands 18 Spectacular holes to the equation you know why it is referred to as "the links heaven". Even such an illustrious title one can never adequately be a first time visitor for drama Portsalon's setting.
