What a lovely surprise to bump into one of our sister ships - Alba Explorer - here at Oban Harbour. (Do not worry - it is a safe encounter! 😉 )

We salute Ocean Youth Trust Scotland’s initiative to support youth development. The charity organizes onboard Alba Explorer sailing voyages for young people aged 12-25. Aiming for them to live healthy, fulfilling lives, positively contributing to their community and society in general.

Unfortunately, they are not on board at the moment. We'll try later today.

What comes to mind when we speak about tides? Flood tide, ebb tide, how the moon influences the sea level, and eventually an image of an estuary where water flows in and out, is used since ancient times by sailors to decide when to leave or enter a harbor situated in such an estuary.
One might imagine the tides can be mastered by looking at timetables, the classic booklets found in each harbor, or searching the internet.

But these are only part of story. For example here, in the Hebrides, it is also the difference between the timing and size of the high and low tides along the west coast of Scotland, which drives enormous currents along the coast squeezing floods through narrow channels between islands.

Therefore each voyage needs careful planning by looking up the hourly charts from the Tidal Stream Atlas.

The big boys were fishing big time this morning, so we can enjoy some (smoked) salmon at breakfast. Thank you chef Raluca for deliciously saving our breakfast @ Ironbarque’s!

Ironbarque received a new main sail!
As you may know, about 10 days ago, we were crossing the bay of Biscay, on our way from Portugal to UK. Due the storm our main sail was damaged.

Last night, we put up a new main sail. It was a team effort! Then, it was time to celebrate!

Today we are off towards Iona island of the Inner Hebrides, known as the birth place of Celtic Christianity in Scotland.

It is a privilege to be on board Ironbarque for the Hebrides expedition. Captain Oleg Margina named me “the deckhands.” I know he meant it as an encouragement, but I hope during this two weeks trip to learn something about nautical and Scotland’s beautiful nature and rich culture. Catinca - (almost) 16 years old.

Ahoy sailors!

Ironbarque expeditions continue. After a month and a half in beautiful Scotland, Ironbarque will make about 1900 miles from Northern Ireland to the Canary Islands. The route is similar to the one from Lisbon to Belfast, i.e., ocean sailing, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, Bay of Biscay, tides, weather routing, and possible whales, orcas, and dolphins.
It is quite possible that during the passage, we will practice the following:
- expedition sailing
- choosing and adjusting the route according to the weather forecast
- Single-handed navigation
- storm tactics (e.g., how to reef, setting up storm sails, storm anchor)
Price: EUR 500 + expenses for provisions and diesel
Duration: 12 days + (depending on weather conditions)
We intend to leave Belfast on 27-28.08.2023
Places are limited.
The passage is considered A/B practice in Set Sail Nauticschool.

Stay tuned!

And yes, even if you're not participating in this expedition, spreading the word would help our captain Oleg Margina organize the most suitable crew.

June cannot pass by without acknowledging Jacques-Yves Cousteau, born this month (1910 - 1997) – a great oceanographer well-known for protecting marine life for present and future generations. This year also marks 50 years since, in 1973, together with his two sons, Jean-Michel and Philippe, he founded "The Cousteau Society for the Protection of Aquatic Life."

We celebrate and honor Jacques Cousteau by continuing marine research and trying to draw attention to ocean pollution and its consequences on aquatic biodiversity and, implicitly, on us humans through the studies we carry out in partnership with the Institute of Biology Bucharest of the Romanian Academy represented by Dr. Corina Iţcuş - the scientific leader of the Ironbarque expeditions.

"The future is in the hands of those who explore... and from all the beauty they discover while crossing perpetually receding frontiers; they develop for nature and humankind an infinite love." ~ Jacques Yves Cousteau
