This time last year we were approaching the Mohne dam having ridden from Scampton to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the dams raid. What a great trip that was. Sombre and respectful but a great group of riders.

Next year marks the 80th anniversary of D Day, the largest amphibious operation ever. If you’ve ever wanted to visit, why not do so by bike and see not only the famous beaches but also follow the battle for Normandy through to the closure of the Falaise Gap (or Chambois Pocket, Corridor of Death in French and various other names). Great cycling, great sites, great history.

Having charged past the tourist signs so often in the past, I made time to visit Chartwell today and how pleased I was. It is wonderful, so atmospheric. Afterwards the historical theme continued with a visit to David Maltby’s grave - the man who breached the Mohne dam and was killed short months later. Maltby, like Hopgood who was killed at the dam, was a fellow Matlburian. Then on to visit (thanks for the tip Julie) Baron Jean de Salys Longchamps, killed 80 years ago tomorrow, a Belgian nobleman best known for strafing the Gestapo headquarters in Brussels single handedly, having previously been refused permission to do just that. Now far a pint of something local and a good night’s sleep!

Warner Ottley’s crash site on the way to the Möhne dam, taking off 80 years ago today and crashing in the small hours of 17 May 1943. Hit by flak over Hamm he avoided the civilian population before he crashed on the edge of the wood. #617
