Developed by a Product designer and former HM Inspector of Health & afety with HSE's Construction Division, Vehicle Edge Protection System is a newly developed product (currently in the final stages of development) which provides protection to tradesmen who access the roof of their vehicles to secure ladders, tools or materials. It is unique in providing protection on the vehicle itself, allowing

safe access to secure timber and other 'loose' materials in safety. It is swiftly and securely errected in seconds in 2 simple movements (one per side)
Over the years deaths and serious injuries have been suffered by persons falling from vans during loading and unloading. VEPS has been developed as a result of these incidents, and to address a need identified by Sheriff A D Miller during the Fatal Accident Enquiry into the death of Mr Graeme Duthie, a Joiner who died in a Forfar builders merchant's yard when he fell from his van whilst loading timber. Our patent has recently been granted, and we are now looking to attract the support of a development partner with experience in new product development in either Work at height solutions or the automotive components industry to work with us in taking the project forward
Testing to BS EN 13374 - Class A will then be the next step.

A fall from the top of a van can kill or cause very serious, life changing injury. The law requires that risk to be managed. Head over to www.veps.co.uk to find out more, and to see the VEPS system in action.
"That's how we've always done it" remains the poorest, laziest defence for safety failures, and will offer no adequate explanation to either the courts or to the families of someone, your employee, injured through that attitude.
Let's make 2022 the year of change.

VEPS has been.granted a UK patent which covers our elevating edge protection system which accommodates the storage of long items,

Think back to 2005. A long time ago, wasn't it? The Work at Height Regs were introduced (but to replace existing legislation with similar requirements), and what was one of the risks identified right from the off? Yup, the risk of falls from LCVs. Front and centre of the launch campaign.
So why has industry still to react? To catch up? To change?
It's not ignorance. There have been cases of serious and fatal accidents, There has been publicity, I've shouted it from the rooftops (and adequately protected van tops) So why then? Complacency?
What was I doing in 2005? It was the year I joined HSE.

If your workers are ever on top of your LCVs (whether loading or as a working platform) as an employer THEIR Safety had better be top of YOUR agenda.

Pride may come before a fall, but what comes after doesn't bear thinking about - Injury, lost time, enforcement action, fines, HSE FFI costs, and worst of all, potentially having to break the news to an employee's family that they are not coming home.

It's not worth the risk. Is it?

A wee trip to A&E with number 2 son the other evening (He's fine, nothing serious) and I couldn't help noticing that if your van doesn't have VEPS, you might just see something very similar to stop you having another fall, this time after your trip in an ambulance.

The list of his injuries makes for stark reading. Still think it's 'safe' for your staff to use door mounted ladders to access items carried on their van roofs? He's one of the lucky ones.

THOMAS Rafferty should have died three years ago when he fell from the top of his van and fractured his skull, broke his neck and jaw and ripped his…
