Sad and shocked to see that Dutch journalist and criminal investigator Peter R de Vries has succumbed to injuries sustained when he was shot last week.

One of the most courageous and tenacious reporters I have ever seen. He never gave up once he set his mind on solving cases, and was a rock for grieving families, people wrongly convicted of crimes and those who needed him to find out the truth about missing or murdered children.

He will be sorely missed.

Utrecht is one of my favourite Dutch cities. And I love this!

For the die-hard Dutch beer and tompouce fans!

Vanaf vandaag echt verkrijgbaar: Tompouce bier!

Rolletjes, or kniepertjes, are a Dutch New Years Day tradition. They are similar to brandy snap rolls, but made of half the amount of butter and no syrup, but with the addition of eggs (see recipe in comments below). The texture is comparable To ice cream cones.
😋

Originally from the North and North-East of the Netherlands, they are baked in special waffle irons. Historically they contained more sugar than they do now and were eating in winter to give people the energy needed to deal with the cold.
💨
Knoepertjes are either eaten flat, or rolled up and filled with sweet whipped cream.
👍🏻
A great way to celebrate the New Year!

We made the ultimate Dutch snack: Bitterballen! Deep fried balls filled with beef ragout are a traditional party favourite. Normally served with a mustard dip, but I prefer mayo.

Ingredients: 100gr butter, 1 cup of flour, 3 cups of beef stock, 2 cups of shredded cooked beef, pepper, salt and parsley. For the coating: plain flour, beaten eggs, breadcrumbs.

Melt the butter and on a low heat stir in the flour, till you have a solid ball. Add the stock one cup at the time, stir through till dissolved. Once all three cups are in, let it bubble on a low heat (be careful not to burn it). Add the beef and stir through. Add salt, pepper and freshly cut parsley to taste. Let it bubble for 5 minutes without burning. Remove from a pan and refrigerate for 5 hours or until very cold and solid.

Form balls the size of a golf ball and roll through plain flour, then coat completely in egg and then coat completely in bread crumbs. Once you have done all, refrigerate till cold again, or freeze to use later.

Fry at 180 degrees Celsius in deep fat fryer for about 5 minutes, slightly longer from frozen. Serve with mustard to dip, or any sauce you prefer.

It’s quiet in 2 of the best lived tourist attractions in The Netherlands. Which is good, as we are all supposed to stay inside.

Hope you are all ok.

I absolutely love Dutch Masters paintings. When you think of Dutch masters, one name stands out: Rembrandt.

I was very lucky to visit the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg last year. The Hermitage has one of the largest Rembrandt collections in the world. I felt like a kid in a candy shop!

Who is your favourite Dutch painter?

The Nicolaaskerk church tower in Haren stands tall and proud in the centre of the village.

Build in the 13th century in the Roman / Romanogothic style, it burned down several times over the centuries. It was restored in 1914. It was at this time that the saddle roof of the tower was replaced by the current 8 sided roof.

Several items of furniture inside date from the 17th and 18th century, and the organ dates from 1776.

In 1672 Christoph Bernard von Galen, the German bishop of Munster, used the church as his watch tower during the siege of Groningen. Legend goes he was eating sauerkraut (zuurkool in Dutch, or sour cabbage in English) and the people of Groningen shot the plate out of his hand with their canon!

The bishop is nicknamed Bommen Berend (bombs Berend) and every year on the 28th of August the city of Groningen celebrates the end of the siege. This date is also called Bommend Berend in Groningen!
You can still see the damage in the tower, and two canon balls can be seen in the church.

In front of the church, left of the steps, is the monument for victims of the Second World War. More about this in a future post.
