Winter skills courses.
Winter is a time of the year when many hillwalkers avoid the big hills. Short daylight hours and poorer weather make any trip to the mountains more challenging, and when snow and ice cover the hills there's a whole host of new hazards to consider - avalanches, corniced cliff edges, long run outs down icy slopes in the event of a slip and the much dreaded whiteout conditions when ground is indistinguishable from the sky. Specialist winter equipment is needed (ice axes, crampons and winter boots) and there are skills to be learned in the safe use of these. The physical effort of moving in deep snow exhausts easily, and personal admin becomes much harder - thick winter gloves reduce dexterity and bigger, heavier packs with more gear is needed.
It's often said that there is no such thing as winter hillwalking in Scotland's mountains - only easy mountaineering. Yet the rewards can be astounding - nothing can match the feeling of standing on a mountain summit on a cold, crisp clear winters day when the hills are blanketed in snow as far as the eye can see. Equally, successfully managing to get up and down in the foulest and most difficult of winter conditions carries its own satisfaction.
It's extremely important for anyone venturing out in these conditions to learn the skills required. From using an ice axe (the "mountaineers multitool"), to putting crampons on and walking safely. Arresting a slip or fall on icy ground, and ascending steep snowy slopes. Awareness of avalanches and how to avoid entering avalanche terrain. Winter navigation when snow obscures all paths and the most commonly used navigation features and only the broad shape of the landscape remains. What to carry, what to do in an emergency and how to survive an unplanned night out on the mountain in the depths of the darkest, coldest time of the year. If you want to learn these skills and more this winter, drop a message - lots of availability for the coming season!
