Day 4 Alentejo

After arriving in the dark at herdade_do_sobroso we woke to the most stunning landscape topped by a wonderful breakfast. Top marks to this venue for its hospitality and well worth a stay as part of any trip to the area.

Final morning and we head to the coastal village of Porto Cove with its rugged coastline and beautiful beaches/coves. There’s kilometres of walking trails along the coast and a lovely place to unwind for a few days before heading back to Lisbon or the airport.

Lunch today at Restaurant Lamelas (Michelin Guide recommended) with a terrace overlooking a pretty cove and a menu to match. Very reasonably priced and the service was excellent.

Back to the airport in the afternoon for our flight back to the UK with tapairportugal

Thank you again to tapairportugal and Visitalentejo for organising 3 jam packed nights for us to sample a fraction of what this area has to offer - beautiful towns, castles, wine tasting, hiking, cycling, nature reserves, wildlife, bird watching, relaxation, gastronomy, authenticity, coastal resorts so much more, all easily accessible from Lisbon.

Day 3 Alentejo

Wonderful breakfast at Casa do Gadanha before heading off to Évora (Capital of Culture 2027) for a guided walking tour of this Roman walled city. Extemely pretty, traditional and to see it properly and do it justice would require 2/3 nights. We took in the Cathedral and the Chapel of Bones before lunch at Cafealentejo Restaurante

After lunch it was the beautiful walled village of Monsaraz, stunning views, a small castle, shops and restaurants.

After that it was wine tasting, evening meal and overnight stay at herdade_do_sobroso - wow what a place, exquisite wines, superb food and hospitality

First full day in Alentejo and what a way to get feel for what this region has to offer as a destination.

Breathtaking scenery, traditional towns and villages full of personality, boutique hotels, wineries, amazing gastronomy, hiking and cycling routes and hosts that want you to make the most of your time here.

We started the day in Marvao, a walled city and castle at one of the highest points in Portugal. You can see Spain on one side, just part of the panoramic 360 views.

Next was the small town of Castelo de Vide, our host here showed us his boutique hotel Casa Amarela and then hosted our lunch in a local restaurant before guiding us around the town.

Next stop was a real experience, a lovely hotel hotel_torredepalma an award winning winery, beautifully designed hotel, spa & restaurant. They offer some amazing experiences from star gazing, personal dining, wine tasting plus many more.

We finished the day back in Estremoz at restaurant Alecrim.

I’ve been to Lisbon and the coast a few times but never inland and I was really excited to see what it can offer.

Well the first day didn’t disappoint 🍷🍽️

I had a direct flight with TAP Air Portugal from Heathrow (they also fly direct from Manchester) and from there it was approx an hour and half to our first stop at tapada.coelheiros for lunch, wine tasting and because they grow four different varieties on the estate - walnut tasting, before a tour of the estate in their jeeps. An amazing place, apart from the wine and walnuts they also harvest their own olives, raise sheep, have deer wandering around and grow their own cork trees.

Leaving rather stuffed, we headed to the local city of Estremoz, our base for the next two nights. Before heading to the hotel we visited the local castle overlooking the city to walk off lunch up the 118 steps for the stunning 360 views of the city and countryside.

Home for the next two nights is the beautiful and tasteful Casa do Gadanha, with 11 bedrooms, rooftop terrace and a restaurant that features in the Michelin Guide - casadogadanha_restaurante hosted the evening meal and it was divine, I lost count of the number of courses but each one was carefully crafted and looked mouthwatering in its presentation and didn’t disappoint.

Thanks also go to visit_alentejo for organising a well thought out first day after an early start this morning.
