I was quite amazed, and shocked, to see the stats in this infographic about UK children’s awareness of the natural world. I’m hoping all the stats are wrong but perhaps that comes from the bubble of someone who lives in the countryside 🤔.
We’ve previously popped scavenger sheets in the cottages for youngsters who are visiting ~ you know the thing, find a prickly leaf, a conker, the feather of a bird, a yellow flower etc and I think I’ll just print a few more and leave them so people with young families can enjoy their woodland and field walks with a bit of fun thrown in too.
Should Natural Heritage be part of the school curriculum or should we all be getting out in urban parks, river sides and the countryside more often?
I have fond memories of the seasonal nature tables! Do you?

The wonderful Curlew Cottage (4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms) is available for dates between Monday 14th and Monday 28th October.

The Old Dairy is our fab 2 bedroomed cottage (with 1 bathroom and an additional en suite) and is available for a weekend break from 10th or 11th October. It’s also available from Thursday 17th to Tuesday 29th October.

Short breaks are welcome in either cottage, minimum 3 nights.

Ooft, first frost of the season this morning. The dark skies of the night were loaded with stars and a sharp looking moon. Then as the sun rose there was some gentle autumnal mists. The rest of the day looks like it’s going to warm up nicely.

“At Home with the Mackens 2”
This year’s apple crop was hand picked (it’s a great work out 😉) and we have crushed and pressed these for apple juice ~ 70 litres of it! The apples seemed to have had a slow start this year but it’s all come good in the end!
Cider making is under way (sorry we can’t sell any, no licence!).
We truly feel like we’re embracing Autumn!

“At home with the Mackens”
It’s harvest season here at East Cambusmoon and yesterday was all about honey. Here’s Steve in our kitchen ~ this little video is showing how the honey is spun from the frames. Inside this steel barrel are 4 frames we removed from the hives the night before. After they are spun (centrifugal force) the honey drizzles out and is currently in a separate holding bucket (to remove any bubbles) and left overnight before we decant it into jars ready for consumption (and sale).

The Falls of Falloch looking splendid here in the sunshine. If you drive just north of the Loch you’ll find these falls tucked away on the east of the A82. They’re the perfect spot to enjoy a break if you’re exploring the area.
