We have quite a selection of childrenā€™s books at Overdale. A big thank you to the family who kindly returned a book to us in the post which we guess a little person took home after their stay here. It made us smile and future children staying here will appreciate it!

We recently sat down with Sally for a chat and one of the questions we asked her was -

In any typical artwork you create how much paint/materials you can get through?
I am really careful with what I use to minimise waste. I am also lucky to have acquired a lot of art materials when my two artist parents passed away so its lovely to use materials which they had in their hands.

And it got us thinking about reusing old hand me downs and we wondered -

Has anyone got any old hand me downs that have been passed down through the family that they still use today?

Country pubs would love you to make this TRY January, a chance to discover new places. Where would you recommend? Amanda likes 'duvet pubs' - those that are full of warmth and welcome to thaw you out after a good walk, before you wend your way home. She recommends:

Step into the low beamed bar of Queens Arms - Litton after a good yomp in Littondale and youā€™ll instantly feel the duvet effect. Grab a table next to the open fire, order a pint of the pubā€™s own brew, Lambā€™s bitter, before tucking into one of their handmade pies and youā€™ll get that: ā€˜Allā€™s well with the worldā€™ feelingā€¦

Thereā€™s an unrushed quality to The Sportsmanā€™s in Wath despite the trio of clocks ticking away on one of the walls in the bar. With no music playing, the clocks provide a comforting background beat, but time wonā€™t distract you as your body sinks into one of the comfy bench seats lining the room as you look at the chalkboard lunch menu and relax.

Just the name ā€˜The Snugā€™ for one of the rooms at the The Craven Arms (get your ferret racing tickets now!) is enough of an enticement to go there. This is a pub with cosy corners aplenty, with flagstoned floors, scrubbed wooden tables positioned to make the most of the roaring fire in the cast iron range and enough Dales memorabilia to fill a museum. After youā€™ve strolled along the River Wharfe from Burnsall to Appā€™trick, itā€™s an ideal spot for settling in!

The fact that weā€™d just had a cracking snowy moorland walk above Kettlewell may have had something to do with it, but I remember the steak and kidney suet pudding being ā€˜off the scaleā€™ good when we sat tucking in by the fire afterwards at the The Racehorses Hotel.

My pub favourites include the small but performed-formed Black Bull in Paradise (day-time opening hours only!), part of Theakston Brewery, with a window where you can see the cooper's workshop. Nearby is the The White Bear, Masham where locals gather for quick 'early doors' drinks, crammed into the small snug.

The CB Inn isn't quite as remote as the almost-nearby Tan Hill Inn but still feels miles away from the busy world and serves great food, as does The Punch Bowl Inn where you can spot mice carved by the famous 'Mouseman', Robert Thompson.

We've got several excellent community pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, owned by loyal locals and welcoming to visitors. and Foresters Arms at Carlton-in-Coverdale, and now joined by the wonderful Arms in Muker among others.

So where will you go for Try January? If you're doing Dry January, you can still pop into a pub for a coffee or one of the many zero-alcohol beers and other drinks on offer.
