Overdale holiday cottage

Overdale holiday cottage Overdale is a self catering cottage sleeping up to 6 with stunning views over Wensleydale. Overdale is a 16th century dales cottage in Wensleydale near Hawes.

It sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms. It is comfortably furnished and has many additional features over and above the average self catering cottage - as an example, there are maps and guide books a plenty and there is a huge range of toys and children's books, as well as lots of games and books for all ages. It is located in an idyllic position with great walks right from the door. The views from the cottage

are breath taking. Overdale is an ideal base for an active holiday or somewhere simply to relax. There are plenty of interesting places to visit - both for adults and children. We (the owners) use the cottage ourselves quite regularly but we offer it - at reasonable rates - to other families, to help pay for its upkeep! Loads of other facilities - garden, bike storage etc - send a message for further info

Country pubs would love you to make this TRY January, a chance to discover new places. Where would you recommend? Amanda likes 'duvet pubs' - those that are full of warmth and welcome to thaw you out after a good walk, before you wend your way home. She recommends:

Step into the low beamed bar of Queens Arms - Litton after a good yomp in Littondale and you’ll instantly feel the duvet effect. Grab a table next to the open fire, order a pint of the pub’s own brew, Lamb’s bitter, before tucking into one of their handmade pies and you’ll get that: ‘All’s well with the world’ feeling…

There’s an unrushed quality to The Sportsman’s in Wath despite the trio of clocks ticking away on one of the walls in the bar. With no music playing, the clocks provide a comforting background beat, but time won’t distract you as your body sinks into one of the comfy bench seats lining the room as you look at the chalkboard lunch menu and relax.

Just the name ‘The Snug’ for one of the rooms at the The Craven Arms (get your ferret racing tickets now!) is enough of an enticement to go there. This is a pub with cosy corners aplenty, with flagstoned floors, scrubbed wooden tables positioned to make the most of the roaring fire in the cast iron range and enough Dales memorabilia to fill a museum. After you’ve strolled along the River Wharfe from Burnsall to App’trick, it’s an ideal spot for settling in!

The fact that we’d just had a cracking snowy moorland walk above Kettlewell may have had something to do with it, but I remember the steak and kidney suet pudding being ‘off the scale’ good when we sat tucking in by the fire afterwards at the The Racehorses Hotel.

My pub favourites include the small but performed-formed Black Bull in Paradise (day-time opening hours only!), part of Theakston Brewery, with a window where you can see the cooper's workshop. Nearby is the The White Bear, Masham where locals gather for quick 'early doors' drinks, crammed into the small snug.

The CB Inn isn't quite as remote as the almost-nearby Tan Hill Inn but still feels miles away from the busy world and serves great food, as does The Punch Bowl Inn where you can spot mice carved by the famous 'Mouseman', Robert Thompson.

We've got several excellent community pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, owned by loyal locals and welcoming to visitors. and Foresters Arms at Carlton-in-Coverdale, and now joined by the wonderful Arms in Muker among others.

So where will you go for Try January? If you're doing Dry January, you can still pop into a pub for a coffee or one of the many zero-alcohol beers and other drinks on offer.

Amazingly atmospheric painting by our good friend, Brian Alderman, whose gallery is a ‘must visit’ if you are staying in Overdale.

What a weekend of snow and ice in the Dales. Blizzard in Burtersett oil on canvas board, just a quick sketch as the wind dropped. Roads through the village very difficult as is the hill up from the A 684.

A peaceful Christmas to everyone.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributes to the running of Overdale - the cleaning team, our kind friends and neighbours who check things for us, the local tradesmen who assist when needed, the window cleaner, the coalmen and also the Burtersett community who are such a caring and supportive bunch. And thank you to all the families who stay at Overdale. We are lucky to have you. Sheila and Steve
