Allendale Tar Barā€™l 2023. The barrels are filled with tar, sawdust, kindling and paraffin. They get set alight just outside the cottage and itā€™s an amazing spectacle! Also known as the Tar Barl, Bahā€™l, Bahl, and Baal (as each spelling is a contraction of ā€˜barrelā€™) the Tar Barā€™l is one of the most spectacular examples of fire festival events still practised today. In order to be involved in the procession, each man must have been born in the Allen Valleys and many have inherited their status from previous generations. This sizzling, sparkling ceremony has been celebrated for at least the last 160 years of Northumberlandā€™s history, though some believe it began in the Middle Ages. Then just before midnight all the barrels get thrown onto the bonfire to bring in the new year and to ward off evil spirts. Havenā€™t posted any updates lately of the lodge so here is another sneaky look inside. Unfortunately the build is taking longer than hoped. But thatā€™s not necessarily a bad thing. Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far

Havenā€™t posted on the page in a while as been busy - you can see from the video how progress is going!

The sounds of the running water and birdsong is just perfect! The glass and wood is just a great combination. Still aiming to be open summer 2023!

August 2021 saw the teats starting for the ground screws. The purpose of this was to ensure that the screw could torque up to the correct strength- strong enough to withstand being in the clay #selfbuildhomes #selfbuilduk #granddesigns #georgeclarke
