Ellon Lemmings...to be a member you had to jump off the cliff beside the castle...[ into the sea! ] it was not suicidal just scarily stupid!!!!!!

An eerie scene at Slains Castle 🏰

On the coast of Cruden Bay lies the remains of this iconic castle which played host to a number of celebrities in the 19th century, including Bram Stoker. Slains is believed to be the castle that inspired his famous Dracula novel! 📚🧛‍♀️

Sob, sob....I am about to leave this stunning landscape to spend time on a vast expanse of grey coloured heaving undulating wet sea! But I will feel joyous when the sea stiffens, stops moving up and down and becomes a dry sparking white. My heart will quicken when we see the first cream coloured dot wandering on the ice [ 500 metres away ]!!!!!!!

WILDLIFE OF THE WEEK: Capercaillie

This is the largest member of the grouse family and they are big – an adult male capercaillie can weigh up to 5kg! With their glossy black feathers and striking red ‘eyebrow’, they’re easy to spot ... if you can find them!

Unfortunately, the capercaillie is one of the most endangered birds in Britain and is at a very real risk of extinction. A population managed to stay on one of the Loch Lomond islands until recently.

Food: Shoots and buds

Good Trust places to spot them: Ben Lomond, Mar Lodge Estate, West Affric
