Everything You Need to Know about Midges in Scotland AND what you can do to avoid them!

Well, midges in Scotland have a seriously big reputation, which seems unreal considering their size (they are so small, you can’t swat them). It has honestly been the one thing we have been asked most about during our time exploring Scotland!

Generally we didn’t find them to be a big issue, but we did spend most of our time on the islands. However, when we returned to the mainland, we noticed a huge difference. Although the bites are painful and itchy, the sheer annoyance of them constantly swarming around you is the hardest bit (in my opinion).

Things you can do to avoid them:
➡️ Visit the West Coast and Highlands during Sep-May.
➡️ The East Coast generally has fewer midges during the summer months.
➡️ Visit the Outer Hebrides or Tiree. These islands are notoriously windier, so in turn benefit from a lack of midges. Midges have tiny wings and can’t fly with winds over 7mph.
➡️ Avoid camping in the forest. The conditions provide them with shelter from the wind and direct sun, so it is an ideal place to cause annoyance.
➡️ Opt for wild camping spots or campsites near the coast where it is likely to be windier.
➡️ Avoid being outside at dawn and dusk, because midges will be more active when the sun is covered by clouds. They don’t like direct sunlight.
➡️ Check the Smidge Count for the area you are visiting on www.smidgeup.com
➡️ Stock up on insect repellent. We recommend . Smidge works by blocking midges' antennal receptors, so they have difficulty finding you and then, if they do land, Smidge makes you taste horrible to the insects, deterring them from feeding.
➡️ Burn midge repellent candles. The strong scent is a good deterrent.
➡️ Invest in some midge nets for your campervan. These can be made for both the rear and sliding doors. We have some made by www.sarahs-mosquito.net Alternatively you could make your own, just ensure the mesh is small enough!
