😀 FACT FRIDAY 😀

Sidmouth.

Did you know that Sidmouth predates recorded history? Yep, the Sid Valley, which includes Sidmouth has been occupied as far back as the Iron Age and part of the valley was gifted by Saxon king, King Athelstan to Exeter Cathedral.

The town appeared in the Domesday Book for the first time in 1086 under the name Sedemuda, which translates from old English into mouth of the Sid and was described as a fishing village.

There is a part of town known as Fortfield which at one time did have a fort. This was likely built in the 1600s due to fear of a French invasion. Today the town’s cricket pitch sits on the site.

The town was once home to royalty, Edward Duke of Kent, the youngest of George III’s sons, along with his wife and daughter moved into Woolbrook Glen – now known as the Royal Glen. They had only been in town for a few weeks when he became ill and passed away, making his daughter, the future Queen Victoria, in line for the throne.

Sidmouth has featured in a host of literary works, including The Tale of Little Pig Robinson by Beatrix Potter. She based the location of Stymouth on Sidmouth and included descriptions of the beach and surrounding countryside. It also provided the inspiration for Wessex by Thomas Hardy, Pendennis by William Makepeace Thackeray and The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle.

Not only has Sidmouth appeared in fictional works, it has also been home to several writers, including R F Delderfield, who lived at what is now the Gazebo on Peak Hill. JRR Tolkein would stay in the town for holidays and wrote the early part of Lord of the Rings while here too.

Sidmouth Folk Week remains one of the longest running folk festivals in the UK and takes place every August. The festival was even once given its own blue plaque.

😀 FACT FRIDAY 😀

🏰 Sissinghurst Castle & Gardens 🏰
How Sissinghurst became a castle.

The site that Sissinghurst Castle Garden sits on was once a Saxon pig farm, it would have been originally called 'Saxenhurst,' with 'hurst' having meant woodland.

The Tudor buildings were used as a prison for up to 3,000 French sailors who were captured by the British during the Seven Years War, between 1756-63. Held for months at a time in vile, stinking conditions, the prisoners lived in 'cells' with little access to fresh air, clean water or adequate food supplies.

The sailors referred to Sissinghurst as 'le chateau' hence 'castle' being adopted into its name, although not a direct translation.

An original ink and dye drawing on display in the library gives a remarkable insight into what the Sissinghurst site would have looked like in the 18th century.

Join us on our Day Tour to Sissinghurst Castle & Gardens on Tuesday 24th June.

Based centrally in Stratford-upon-Avon at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, this tour makes the most of the area with a day to explore this fabulous medieval market town complete with river cruise, as well as visits to Blenheim Palace, Charlecote Park and the recently reopened Lord Leycester Hospital.

Tour Itinerary
Monday - After departing the Island in the morning we head northwards to Oxford where we stop for lunch and viewing, we then continue to Stratford-upon-Avon to our hotel where we enjoy a welcome cup of tea/coffee while our luggage is taken to our room. There will be time to settle in prior to dinner.

Tuesday - Thursday at leisure with three included excursions.

Excursions
Full Day - Stratford-upon-Avon & River Cruise
We begin our day with a relaxing 45 minute river cruise with an engaging guide who will bring Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon to life. We enjoy a cup of tea and biscuits as we drift along the Avon. After disembarking, we have time for a stroll of our own and lunch, before getting a bit more involved in the town's history as we head to Shakespeare's Birthplace.

Full Day - Blenheim Palace
We spend today at the fabulous Blenheim Palace, the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough. One of England's largest houses, it was built in the early 1700s and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Afterwards, we make the short journey to beautiful Warwick to visit the Lord Leycester Hospital, which was built in the 1300s as a Guildhall for meetings, a Great Hall for entertaining and a kitchen, and later used as a "hospital" and place of sanctuary caring for fallen and deserving warriors.
