Update. Thanks for all the comments, messages and emails we are working to identify suitable locations for this operation.

We are inviting contact from equestrians throughout Derbyshire to assist in the planning and ex*****on of an upcoming proactive policing operation that will be run by the team in relation to the The British Horse Society 'Dead Slow Campaign' β•

The intention is that we will work with South Yorkshire Police mounted section to target inconsiderate and dangerous drivers that fail to drive safely and considerately when encountering horses being ridden on the road 🐎

We would like to identify a number of suitable locations to run the operation across the county that are notorious 'hot-spots' for road incidents involving horses πŸ—ΊοΈ

Please get in touch via Messenger or using the team's dedicated email [email protected] πŸ—£οΈ

Every day is a school day… I spend lots of time looking at and working with English style saddles but today I got to have a look at the inner workings of a western saddle, discuss their differences to English saddles and how they should fit both horse and rider.

Apparently these youngsters find the idea of having to wear a saddle highly amusing! πŸ˜†

*** TRAINING SPECIFICITY ***

A few days ago I posted about flat v hills. This is an important component of training specificity. So in general, for optimal performance and reduced injury risk a large component of your training should relate to how you are going to compete. Training 100% on an arena or all-weather track will not fully prepare your horse to compete on grass. Training long-distance-slow will not prepare your horse for sprinting. Training in the cold will not prepare your horse for competing in the heat.

TERRAIN is also one of these important considerations if you are competing in competititons where the terrain (hills) may vary i.e. eventing, endurance, driving, point-2-point, etc. Training on the flat induces different muscle recruitment patterns. Training on the flat usually results in longer stride length and lower stride frequency; training on hills results in shorter stride length and high stride frequency.

This is not saying if you train over hills you CANNOT compete on the flat, but this will not be optimal. If you only have flat ground to train on then choose relatively flat competitions - for optimal performance and reduced injury risk!

If you train on a mixture of hills and flat then provided you have a balance that is close to the competition conditions, then this will be better than only flat or only hill training.

** EVENT UPDATE** Chatsworth International Horse Trials

Statement from Chatsworth International – 12th – 14th May 2023

Our biggest challenge currently is lorry parking – particularly in the stable field.

We intend to run ALL 2* competition on Saturday (so no 2* dressage tomorrow Friday). This would ease the pressure on the parking team & allow for a more spread out arrival time. We will be towing in so I would ask you to be patient &, most importantly, kind to all working so hard to make this happen. Please ensure that you have located where your towing eye is for your vehicle before you arrive so that our tractors can assist you as quickly as possible. Vehicles are towed at the owner’s risk.

New times will be posted on www.eventingscores.co.uk as soon as possible.

PLEASE note stables are therefore closed to 2* competitors until tomorrow except in exceptional circumstances (accompanying 4* horses for instance).

4* & Advanced currently timetabled as posted.

We will of course update if the situation changes.

BURGHLEY YOUNG EVENT HORSE FRIDAY 12 MAY

Although we have made some changes to the timetable we still intend to run the BYEH classes but starting later – new times will be posted on www.eventingscores.co.uk as soon as possible but the 5yo class will now start at appx 1100.

We will be towing in so I would ask you to be patient &, most importantly, kind to all working so hard to make this happen. Please ensure that you have located where your towing eye is for your vehicle before you arrive so that our tractors can assist you as quickly as possible. Vehicles are towed at the owner’s risk.

We will of course give updates if the situation changes.

ARENA EVENTING FRIDAY 12 MAY

We are so sorry we have had to abandon the Friday Arena Eventing after the extreme rain yesterday put too much pressure on our infrastructure.

We still intend to run Saturday’s AE classes.

We will of course give updates if the situation changes.

❗ Warning issued by vets about increased cases of Atypical Myopathy ❗

The BEVA - The British Equine Veterinary Association is warning horse owners to remain vigilant as their members have seen higher numbers of horses with Atypical Myopathy.

With high winds, sycamore seeds are spreading. Also known as β€˜helicopters’ the seeds can travel a fair distance, so even if your grazing isn’t directly surrounded by sycamore trees you may still be affected.

Atypical Myopathy can be fatal so if you have any concerns for your horse contact your vet immediately.

Help to keep your horse safe by taking these preventive steps:

β€’ Be vigilant and make sure that any seeds are routinely removed
β€’ Remove horses from, or fence off specific areas, of affected fields
β€’ Provide supplementary forage to horses on poorer grazing to help minimise the risk of them foraging for alternative food such as the seeds
β€’ Check your water source for fallen seeds and clear the trough if it is found to be contaminated

For more information on Atypical Myopathy and how to spot the signs, visit: https://www.bhs.org.uk/horse-care-and-welfare/health-care-management/horse-health/equine-diseases/atypical-myopathy/

HARD GROUND AND HOW TO USE IT!

A recent post in Your Horse quoted vet and event rider Natalie McGoldrick on concerns of riders advising one another to use training on hard ground to prepare for competing on hard ground!

This is a tricky one and there is a fine line and some grey areas. So we know that....

➑ using a variety of different surfaces usually reduces the risk of orthopaedic injury

➑ very soft surfaces increase the risk of soft tissue injury (muscle, tendon, ligament)

➑ very hard surfaces exacerbate arthritis and increase the risk of concussive damage to the hoof

➑ sudden changes in surface e.g. from soft to hard increase injury risk

➑ surfaces that are very uneven may increase the risk of injury

➑ short periods of cantering on hard surfaces (30s) increase bone strength; early in the season short periods of trotting on roads (1-2 min) do the same. By this stage of the season bone strength will already have increased so that trotting on roads

So where does hard ground fit in? Every training session is a potential risk for injury. If you are going to have to compete on hard ground, then some very short periods of work (less than a few minutes in canter and no jumping or galloping) are likely to be beneficial BUT if your horse has pre-existing conditions such as arthritis then this carries a risk. So the advice to avoid hard ground for say 90% of your fitness work is good advice IMHO.

Do you want to help Ukrainian horses and owners caught in the crisis created by Russian conflict?

We've teamed up with The British Horse Society, British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) and World Horse Welfare, with support from member bodies across the equestrian industry, to set up 'British Equestrians for Ukraine'. The group will help to facilitate a supply chain to meet the immediate demand for goods such as haylage, feed and bedding, as well as raise money to fund aid directly where it’s needed most.
