The Knights of Royal England

The Knights of Royal England The Spectacular Knights of Royal England have the experience to offer you all manner of mediaeval en He is a very pretty horse, and he knows it.
(1)

In mediaeval times the best horses in the world came from Spain and Portugal. Today we use the same breed of horses in our shows, Andalusians and Lusitanos. Iberian horses are great to work with, sharp, agile, intelligent and very willing to work and show off. Our Horses
Marlon is the biggest of our horses, 16 hands and is a grey Lusitano gelding. He is very strong willed, and the rider has to be

clever to think up new interesting things for him to do so he does not get bored. Garbo is our newest horse, he is a black purebred Spanish Stallion. He is enjoying his time and new life in England, he's getting used to the weather, the jousting, the loud noises, flappy flags and of course the language, but he is picking up English quickly. He is very well behaved and his best friend is Domingo who has been showing him the ropes, he loves grass but is not so keen on the weather especially in the winter. Centuro (also known affectionately as Cheerio)- He is also a grey Andalusian Gelding, with a lot of character. He is a very laid back horse, very easy to handle, loves his food (rather too much) but is such a fidget that he never stands still when he is being ridden and burns off his excess weight very quickly. Very excitable and very bouncy like Pinki. Domingo, a grey Lusitano gelding, is the newest addition to the Jousters family. He took part in a few shows last season, but now he is here to stay! He is a very kind hearted animal who keeps the peace between the other horses when they get too excited! He is a very quick learner and preformed at Blenheim Palace 2015 like a he had been Jousting for as long as the other horses. Our Knights
Sir Jasper de Barry – Leader of the Red team, been jousting since he was a teenager, never short of something to say in the tournament and keeps the young knights on their toes. Sir Sam of Hever – Grew up around jousting and fights with Lord Ashley for control of the blue team. Recently re-knighted as Sir Sam of Hever, he is a very agile knight, a good fighter and not afraid of taking a hard hit. Lord Ashley of Hampshire – Another experienced young knight, very athletic and keen to show off his skills with the sword. Wears the horned helmet which the other knights enjoy trying to knock off his head often giving Ashley a severe head ache. Sir Paul of Anjou - having jousted from when he was a teenager, back in 1922, is an experienced knight, and is always happiest when he is riding. He has a particular soft side for the horses and in particular Domingo, his trusty steed. No one has solved the curious case of 'where he is comes from' .........yet, but all of us enjoy being there for the journey !

Fantastic sunny day in Cornwall at the lovely Pendennis Castle last weekend. Paul of Anjou returned to riding Campeon after his trip to the Crusades in Spain, not looking very suntanned but spent all his money on Sangria and Tapas ! Sir Henry from Up North, (who was our guest knight this week) rode Jerezana our beautiful new buckskin Andalusian, very pretty, very fast ! Henry loved the small arena !!! haha, no brakes!! He scored very well, picking up all the Heads ! Sir Sam of Hever rode Garbo and was spectacular on the tilt, scoring well, lots of breaking lances and cracking Lord Ashley on his head while going for maximum points by breaking his crest. Lord Ashley, nursing a broken elbow (falling from a great height) and a knee injury (falling from a snowboard!!) rode the big black Fabuloso, who was pretty Fabuloso and managed to damage the Frenchman Sir Paul on the tilt. Thanks to great hospitality from English Heritage and some amazing swordfighting from Angus, Damian and Nathan and of course King Henry VIII graced us with his presence as ever. Stonor Park this weekend, see you there!

Another lovely sunny weekend, dont knock it, rain will be here at some stage and when it does, it will probably be too much!! ☀️🌧
Even our desert living Spanish horses are feeling the heat!
Great weekend, Ashley of Hampshire won on Saturday, lots of heckling from Mungo, Tim, Angus and Caspar, great job guys, love your work. Sir Sam came out on top on Sunday scoring maximum points.
Hot news! 🐎🐎Paul of Anjou brought out a new horse on Sunday, his first tournament (the horse not Paul, silly), Campeon a 5 year old bay Andalusian performed really well, look out for him coming out again very soon. No matter how much training you do with a new horse its always very exciting to see their reaction to big crowds, loud bangs, music and Mungo, Campeon was great.

If you came to see the jousting and enjoyed it please share us on Facebook we love meeting new people! AND let us know who you think will win the season! Drop your comments in the below.

See you next weekend at Hever Castle & Gardens, hopefully a bit cooler.

09/08/2022

Wow, that was a hot one, thanks to everyone and the horses for being so magnificent, and to the audience for staying out in the desert sun for so long ! ☀️
While Sir Jasper languishes away from the jousting...broken but resilient, the rest of the fantastic team did their stuff and put on a great tournament, honours for the day shared between Sir Sam and Sir Matthew. Hot hot for all those running around on foot, all relishing the chance to shout at Lord Ashley every time he passed them. Caspar did a great job as Knight Marshall, keeping the knights under control. Horses are the most important on the day so water is available to them throughout the show, its particularly funny when they dribble, spit and splutter into a water bucket and then Sir Sam dips his head right in afterwards, to cool down...yuk! 🤮Only 3 more weekends to go at Hever, hope we see you there. 😎🦸⚔️⚔️⚔️

04/08/2022

Another busy weekend at Hever, the King took it on himself to order some serious punishments for Lord Ashley, he looked battered and blue after the weekend but still came out on top of the scores 💪
Nice to see Mungo back, he left to go off on his own Crusade around the world but after all his travels came back to help his friend Sir Sam of Hever and he was also happy to gang up on Lord Ashley 😝 Good to see Matthew of Castile riding well and scoring some valuable points for the red team.
No wild mad rabid dog this week running out into the jousting arena during the tournament, thank you everyone for keeping your dogs under control 🐶 Some cracking hits on the tilt and the scores are close as we get to the half way point in our Hever Jousting season ⚔️⚔️

25/07/2022

Now that was a busy weekend, weather not too bad, millions of visitors watching and we loved every minute. Spoils were shared on each day by Sir Sam and Lord Ashley, Angus of Sarum again was a very naughty boy and paid the price by being punished very wuffley, haha. Some great fighting on the ground with swords and axes including that crazy melee, did nobody really get hurt? Surprisingly not ! Lances broken, head shots on the tilt, horses were all raring to go, they really are getting back into the swing of Hever Castle Jousting and enjoying the chance to show off. Fantastic all-action and now we are all ready to compete again next weekend at Hever. See you there!

22/07/2022

2 days jousting to celebrate the hottest days ever, since the dinosaurs, and I'm not just talking about Sir Jasper !!
Our Spanish horses seemed to take it in their stride, we offered them water after every 10 mins at either end but generally they refused and just wanted to get on with it.
Great day for all, except Sir Jasper, who broke his pelvis 7 days earlier while "rodeo riding" a new 5 year old horse ! He's out of it this season, we hope he will come along in a couple of weeks or so if he can dodge the doctors, and his wife :-p
Tournaments were crazy busy and hot as usual, Sir Paul did really well riding Marlon and came out on top while Sir Sam and Lord Ashley battled it out on foot, just managing to catch their breath in time to ride and joust again ! By the end of the season they will be quite fit !
Thanks to all those amazing Ladies, Squires, Foot Knights, Knight Marshalls who thought they would have a nice day out in the sunshine....haha, they were run ragged. Even the King broke into a gentle canter coming back from the Castle and a slight sweat. Thanks also and introductions to our new knights Sir Matthew of Castille and Sir Damian of Sussex, cheer them on. Back to Hever again next weekend, can't wait.

The sun shone out on Windsor's Smiths Lawn for a glorious day of polo with the Guards Polo Club, Jousting and Pimms, not necessarily in that order. Jousting took place in front of the (real) Royal Box and our thanks also go to the sponsors Out-Sourcing who brought an element of Japanese style to the Windsor Cup day. Jousting was fast and frantic, quite a small arena but all went well with some big hits on the tilt and Sam of Hever coming out victorious on the day, but not quite victorious in the scores. Paul of Anjou wiggled and wobbled and scared the rings, but failed to even spear the hula hoop! Spearing heads was fast with Sir Jasper scoring the most, whilst Angus of Sarum got battered in the middle as Knight Marshall and nearly somersaulted backwards off the tilt rail (sounds impressive when I say somersaulted !!!) Only one day at the Polo though and we are looking forward to Hever Castle. If anyone is in Canterbury high street on the 2 July you may also see a couple of familiar knights on horseback in the town.

Ready for anything! Knights and Knight Marshal's on a shady night.

Firstly congrats to Her Majesty on her Platinum Jubilee, 70 years! Nearly as old as Sir Jasper!! Great weekend at Stonor Park, dodged the rain and thousands came out to enjoy the Bank Holiday. Sam of Hever lit the beacon on his horse on Thursday evening, dark, steep hill, noisy minstrels and lots of fire, what could possibly go wrong ?.....well nothing is the answer, fantastic evening. Thanks to Matthew of Castille for stepping into Lord Ashleys' shoes on the Friday, it means Ashley starts the season with nil points for the first day. Lots of TV and press coverage, well done to the Stonor Park & Gardens Team. On the jousting field, Jasper up to his usual tricks, scoring points in any way he can, Sam of Hever found his voice, and would not stop shouting and trying to infer that Sir Jasper was cheating. Paul of Anjou started Friday well with spearing the heads competition and then blew his chances on the Rings. Lots of lovely knight marshalls, ladies, squires and Tim all busily helping. Thanks to everyone for the smooth running and all at Stonor for organising such a fantastic event. Oh, and thanks for the cannons, the horses loved them 😄😄⚔️⚔️🐎🐎🎉🎉🛡🛡🏹🏹😀😀

Getting to know us!

In mediaeval times the best horses in the world came from Spain and Portugal. Today we use the same breed of horses in our shows, Andalusians and Lusitanos. Iberian horses are great to work with, sharp, agile, intelligent and very willing to work and show off.

We are literally one big family! Through both blood and having know each other for years! This means that we are really close and so we feel it gives our shows a more personal touch.....sometimes too personal when we are just making jokes about the previous nights antics! Our Horses Marlon is the biggest of our horses, 16 hands and is a grey Lusitano gelding. He is very strong willed, and the rider has to be clever to think up new interesting things for him to do so he does not get bored. He is a very pretty horse, and he knows it. Azuquita has a pink nose and is therefore known as Pinki, it’s also probably because few people can pronounce his name. He is a grey Andalusian gelding and came over from Spain in 2010 when he was 7 years old. He is a very over- friendly horse but he is also a very tricky horse to ride as he has a very high action and this makes him very bouncy. Very excitable and very bouncy like Pinki, but with bigger ears. Domingo, a grey Lusitano gelding, is the newest addition to the Jousters family. He is a very kind hearted animal who keeps the peace between the other horses when they get too excited! He is a very quick learner and preformed at Blenheim Palace 2015 like a he had been Jousting for as long as the other horses. Our Knights Sir Jasper de Barry, who rides Cheerio– Leader of the Red team, been jousting since he was a teenager, never short of something to say in the tournament and keeps the young knights on their toes. Sir Sam of Hever, who’s partner in crime is Pinki – Grew up around jousting and fights with Lord Ashley for control of the blue team. Recently re-knighted as Sir Sam of Hever, he is a very agile knight, a good fighter and not afraid of taking a hard hit, especially from his father, Sir Jasper! Lord Ashley of Hampshire, whose horse is Marlon – Another experienced young knight, very athletic and keen to show off his skills with the sword. Wears the horned helmet which the other knights enjoy trying to knock off his head often giving Ashley a severe head ache. Sir Stephen of Porlock, who rides Domingo, is the beardy knight from Somerset, again started jousting when he was a teenager so lots of experience, he enjoys writing and reciting poems to confuse his opponents (and himself). He is an excellent rider and often shows off with Domingo!

And of course the ‘ground staff’ as they are affectionately know. The show literally could not happen with out them! ......not forgetting Mungo (Everyone's favourite for some reason)

See you all soon!! 2018 Dates available on our website!
