Great trip for Guests at www.pocottages.com π
Our friends over at English Riviera Attractions wrote a lovely article highlighting the details of the hard work that goes into being a Paddle Steamer Engineer β΄οΈ
Since joining the River Boat company in 2011, Daniel Wheeldon has been a fantastic asset to the team. He began his training on the vessel in 2014 and has held the title of lead engineer for the paddle steamer 'Kingswear Castle' for the last three years!
A few jobs are completed to ensure the smooth sailing of the paddle steamer. This includes clearing and cleaning, making sure the boiler has water and is rid of any potential leaks, setting out fresh coal and running through safety checks before lighting a fresh fire βοΈ
Then checks are carried out to ensure that the engine, brass, steel and paintwork is clean and in working order. Once the boiler has reached a reasonable temperature and warmed through the engine, the pumps and main engine are ready to run. A signal is sent to the skipper, and they're ready to set off.
A couple of hours later, they leave the moorings and head into the berth on the main town jetty. The boiler feed tank is refilled with fresh water, and the first trip of the day can commence. While passengers are enjoying their trip, Dan continues with his checks to maintain the boiler pressure, shovelling coal and oiling the pumps and engine every 20 minutes or so π₯
As the day winds down, the whole crew has a part to play to make the paddle steamer look its best for the next working day. Touching up paint, cleaning the interior and exterior, and running those vital checks that pop up throughout the day ποΈ
The article really highlights how much love and care Dan has for his job, and the ship itself. "You really have to love this job to do it, and it is wonderful to work on such a historic ship. Iβve been working on her for seven seasons now, and it is hard work but can be very rewarding as the comments about how well looked after she is. It can be motivating enough to make her look and run the best she can."
