One of the most fabulous things to do whilst staying with us at Foxhall Farm is to take the steam train for the day from Pickering, via Goathland, to Whitby and back. Whitby is a lovely seaside town with a gorgeous beach and works class Fish & Chips. The trains run on the hour all day and stop off at Heartbeat village Goathland on the way through. A brilliant day out for all ages.

Hello All. Fox Dog and I have been spending a lot of time together recently, be it going out on cycling adventures along our quiet roads and up into the forest to the lake and also just sat in the tree swing chatting about the views, and our plans for Foxhall Farm.

We have been very lucky to be fully booked this summer, predominantly with people having family gatherings to celebrate family birthdays. However we still have quite a lot of spaces for Autumn. Mid September to December.

The major expenses with Foxhall Farm is the cleaning the house between guests, even though we are lucky that everyone leaves it clean and tidy, it still takes 3 of us a very good long day to bring it up to the perfect standard we like to present our guests with. Also letting agents obviously take a large percentage of all bookings, and rightly so. (And fox dog eats more meat than Elvis)

So the longer our guests stay, the better and direct bookings also good.

So Fox Dog and I have decided that new direct bookings for September 2024 to March 2025, we can offer at £1750 for a full week, which is nearly 40% saving to the prices you will see online. Simply message or ring 07526988266 or [email protected] and we can reserve for you.

This winter just gone, we invested in a huge amount of new fencing which now means we can take horses and ponies as well. The house has 6 King size beds, so can sleep up to 12 people. We have parking and fields to take in 12 horses and ponies as well. No stables as of yet, but some of the nicest hacks on the planet.

If you like a spot of tennis, we are members of the local tennis club, and can arrange you a court for free as frequently as you like during your stay.

If you require to work from home, we have super powerful wifi and lots of quiet space with plenty of views.

Keen cyclists, just behind us, is Boltby Forest where they hold the famous Boltby Bash downhill race. And the local roads, despite being a little hilly, are very picturesque. We have a jet wash and air line at the Farm to clean your bikes too.

There is a gorgeous lake called lake Gormire that is good for wild swimming if you don’t mind a bit of a chill.

I always leave a couple of metal detectors and a spade in the house. We are lucky to own 53 acres of land here and the other day found a gold thing, god knows what it is, see photo below. We don’t have time to do more detecting, but it’s soo exciting!

On an evening we have a log burning stove, a big tv, games table, Wii, karaoke machine, disco lights, and a hot tub that’s always kept at a pleasant 40 degrees.

The kitchen is brilliant for entertaining, dining table seats 12 comfortably. There are 4 ovens, and every gadget you could need for cooking beautiful home cooked meals.

One of our favourite things to do though is walk out to a local restaurant, have a nice meal and a few drinks, then get a lift home (I am happy to pick our guests up in my 7 seater XC90) even if it means doing a couple of runs.

We are considering doing packages including catering too, so please message for details on that front as well.

In 2025 we are getting a wedding license so a lovely couple who have decided to have a quiet family wedding can officially get married here, so if you know anyone that suits, please do share with them. We have local florist, cake and decor contacts locally and can help plan.

So, please do get in touch, it works out a mere £20 per person per night based on 12 sharing, and even for us tight Yorkshire folks, that’s a bargain.

We can still do shorter breaks, and look into any crazy requirements so please drop us a line!!

Have a great day.

One of the best places to visit whilst staying at Foxhall Farm is The Forbidden Corner at Leyburn. You haven’t book well in advance but it is brilliant for all ages. Not good for people with mobility issues, but such an interesting amazing place.

The brainchild of Mr C. R. Armstrong CMG O.B.E, the Forbidden Corner was originally built as a private folly but due to public demand was subsequently opened to the public.

The Forbidden Corner originally started as small wood of Fir trees initially planted as a wind break to the stables at Tupgill Park, with hundreds of trees being planted in 1979. Ten years later in 1989, Colin Armstrong and his good friend Malcolm Tempest decided that a small tower in the western corner needed to be created to enjoy the view down the Coverdale valley. The first job was to build a high wall to shelter the area from the high winds and to create a walled garden.

While the wall was being built, and idea of a grotto was suggested, (a little cave made of piled rocks). This supposed “little” grotto ended up growing into a twenty-five-foot deep hole with soil being carted away in dumper trucks.

Heavy rains shortly after digging filled up the hole, so a channel had to be dug to drain away the water. During the new digging, huge boulders were found and were saved for future use. However with heavy rain and the discovery of underground springs, the sides of the cave kept collapsing leaving Colin Armstrong with an expensive muddy hole !

Building The Forbidden Corner continues

Luckily, the summer of 1991 was much better. The hole was stabilised and strengthened and the first concrete was poured. Come 1992, the grotto was really taking shape and ideas from all over the world, from Skipton Castle to Portmeirion, were being planned for The Forbidden Corner. New additions were planned and put in place, such as the boulder canyon a pyramid of molten glass.

In 1993, after somehow hearing about the grotto, Hull University contacted Malcolm and the first visit of The Forbidden Corner was arranged with a coach of students arriving in July, all of whom really enjoyed themselves, even in the unfinished state.

The decision to open The Forbidden Corner to the public was made. Once the builders had moved out, the gardening started and the hedging for the maze was planted, The paths were improved by hand due to no room for heavy machinery. The Face Tower was built to welcome guests to the folly.

On 23rd July, 1994, The Forbidden Corner was officially opened to the public. Around 100 people came on the opening day. Over time, a building was converted to a ticket office, cafe and gift shop to welcome the excited visitors.

In 1998, new features, such as the Green Man and the Fawcett Tower were built. The Forbidden Corner attracted over 80,000 visitors. The folly was featured in the media, with television programs and newspapers recommending our gardens. Unfortunately this attracted the attention form the planning officers at the Yorkshire Dales National Park. By some oversight, no planning permission had been sought. It was suggested that retrospective planning permission was to be applied for.

Visitors support The Forbidden Corner
Due to these and other factors, pressure was mounting to close the gardens to the public. Colin started addressing each area of concern but he was fighting a losing battle. Loyal visitors started to get involved sending in over 2,000 letters of support as well as a petition to keep The Forbidden Corner open signed by 10,000 signatures. With a lot of campaigning and getting influential people to help fight our corner, in August of the year 2000, the news came that The Forbidden Corner could stay open to the public.

Thanks to everyone who has visited us and helped to keep our gardens open, you can come and enjoy the unique labyrinth of Tunnels, Chambers, Follies and surprises created in a four acre garden in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

Please make sure you book in advance as they do sell out due to limited availability of tickets.

You can also get a lovely meal at the fabulous Saddle Rooms restaurant on site.

Please feel free to ask any questions!!

Julian & Jolene.

What a gorgeous day today. You can see for miles. Lots of heather burning going on in the hills. I’m not sure what that big one sided hill hill is called towards the right of the photo on the skyline but it’s quite a famous one. I think it’s on the border of Yorkshire and Lancashire. Someone more knowledgable will know!

Well. Interesting day at Foxhall Farm. After, some would say, “over polishing” our first Foxhall Find, the gold button, to reveal the not so pretty metal under the gold plating, we have moved attention over to our next find.

Now, Grandad Alg, who is old and clever at this kind of thing thinks it off the old stone building at the top of the hill that I found it next to. However, I have a feeling that it’s much much older than that. I think it might be the bit off the front of a Viking ship buried under the unexplainable large mound in the next fed across from the farm house. It is going in the dishwasher now, much to Jolene’s dismay as the initial part of the cleaning and identification process. We now have 2 epic metal detectors that guests to Foxhall Farm welcome to borrow and are considering dedicating a small room to all the crap, us and other guests find.

If you fancy being the person to dig up the second greatest national treasure (under our button), then visit www.foxhallfarm.co.uk and get yourself booked in.

The excitement literally never ends here.

We found this at Foxhall Farm today whilst out and about with our metal detectors. Any idea what it is? It is bowl shaped and about 1cm diameter? We leave metal detecting stuff in the house for our guests to go exploring the fields treasure hunting. Kids love it!

This week saw the start of 4km of fencing and hedge planting at Foxhall Farm. This makes the 11 acre front field perfect for horses and ponies staying with us. Talk about cold, -4 today, helped to not make a mess of the grass but harder to put holes in. Alan Philips is just a machine, and a perfectionist. We have done 1.5km of 5 bar fencing in 5 days with me getting called off all the time as well with phone calls and meetings. Oli went to hospital today after a load of rails fell on his hand but he’s not broken anything, back in the game tomorrow. Grandad Alg filled in for injured Oli today, and just amount managed to keep up with Alan putting posts in.

You must come and stay, even if it’s just to admire the fencing.

For the purists, they are 12”, 23”, 32” & 40” from top of 47” visible (5’6”), 5x3 posts and 12’ 3.5 x 1.5” rails. Mostly made of larch.
