One comment I often get from guest reviews, is how much they love "all the little touches"

I take a lot of inspiration from nature, but also the William Morris quote, "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful"

I make all the cushion covers and the welcome card that greets you (amongst other things!)

Next week has 3 nights available to book still.
Monday 17th, Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th.

We are deeply saddened to inform all our followers of the passing of 'Riptide'.
A report yesterday morning of a deceased Bottlenose Dolphin on Traeth Gwyn beach (Quay West) lead to an investigation where Sea Watch Foundation were quickly present on the scene and able to identify the individual as our beautiful Riptide.

This Dolphin was one of our favourites amongst all crew and passengers whom we could always use as an example of how we are able to identify individual Dolphins through their dorsal fins on their back.

Riptide's 'Dolphinality'
Riptide was first identified in 1992 thanks to sightings data collected by the Sea Watch Foundation .
A voracious hunter, we would see Riptide launch through the water after fish, throw fish out the water and display some very impressive breaches.

Riptide was a bit of an anomaly Dolphin because we had no idea of his/her gender!
From what we have learned about Bottlenose Dolphin society, the women stay in a pod with their young, males form alliances and the juveniles form 'teenage pods' for a while.
Riptide was a HUGE Dolphin. The size of a male with lots of notches out of its dorsal fin (another typical male characteristic). So by first impressions looking at Riptide we would assume Male...
HOWEVER
Riptide loved to hang out with males and females! 🀣 A main member of our local 'maternity pod' With Ghost and Spirit! Even on numerous occasions swimming alongside little calf Spirit like a babysitter! A typical female characteristic.
So we were always debating amongst our team whether we thought Riptide was male or female. Unless we managed to capture a photo of the underside of the Dolphin (believe us, we tried) we could not get 100% confirmation.

Due to the unfortunate circumstances though we can finally confirm that Riptide was indeed a big, handsome bodacious MALE thought to be in his 40s - which for Bottlenose Dolphins is a good age (average lifespan 40-50 years).

For our team working on the boats he has taught us more about the lives of Bottlenose Dolphins and the fact that they do seem to indeed take part in paternal care of young.
Within Riptide's pod throughout the years there have been a number of calves born and now knowing his gender we hope that some of the calves born into this pod would be sired by him. In particular our adorable little Spirit whom he would swim with on numerous occasions.
Male Bottlenose Dolphins in some areas of the world have been known to take part in 'infanticide' where as it sounds, the older males will try kill a calf to then mate with the female mother (as morbid as it is to say). Riptide showed the complete opposite behaviour with Spirit, caring for the young Dolphin and also mother Ghost.
Whether Riptide is the biological father of Spirit, will never know for sure, but we hold on to this dear thought and hope that his 'Spirit' lives on amongst this pod.

All boat companies and marine charities in New Quay will mourn the loss of Riptide and we come together to share memories, photos and own personal experiences with this Dolphin. We all get to know our locals from working out on the water most days and we get to educate our passengers about their lives and biology. This Dolphin has taught us a great deal and given us all amazing memories and we will miss him dearly.

We encourage all of our and friends to share your own experiences and memories with Riptide below and of course please do share with us any photos and videos of him too! We'd love to see them.

We currently do not know the actual cause of death, however we would assume that it would most likely be through old age.
Swim over that rainbow bridge big boy and we hope you have a plentiful supply of big fish to chase up there πŸ’™

Happy Bank Holiday Weekend!
The weather is showing signs of improving (at last!!).....and just received a wonderful review...... Happy Days!

"We only stayed 1 night at this beautiful cottage, due to being fully booked with other guests. Amanda was a very responsive, friendly, and an extremely helpful host. She is exceptional, with attention to detail, and providing a fantastic personal touch welcome package. The cottage itself is stunning. Excellent quality furniture, and bedding. Anything you could think of , however small was there, at your needs. Extremely well kept and looked after. Serene surroundings with amazing countryside walks. Waking up seeing horses and mountains was just so calming. We highly recommend this cottage and can't wait to rebook in the year for longer!"

The cottage has one bedroom with a very comfortable king-size bed.

I use only top quality 100% cotton bedding.
And with the deafening silence from outside, all in all this means a really good night's sleep.
The window looks out to the back garden.
There is a chest of drawers and some hanging space for your clothes. Bedside tables with lamps.
The bi-fold wooden door that we installed enabled us to have the bed be king-size which for me was essential!

Cei Bach πŸ’™
The next beach to the North of Traeth Gwyn and New Quay.
When the tide is out it's another mile long stretch of sandy beach. Dog friendly all year round.
On really low tides (0.4 or less) you can reach a third bay where there is a waterfall that falls onto the beach.
However we couldn't reach it yesterday as the wind was making the low tide swell too much
There is a booklet with the tide times and heights in the cottage.

One comment I often get in the guest book and in reviews is just how comfortable the bed is.
It is king-size and I use only top quality 100% cotton bedding.
And what with the silence, that surrounds the cottage at night,........Restful nights sleep guaranteed!!

A place to inspire!
My last guest booked for 5 nights and luckily had some great 'paint outside' weather. They left a comment in the guest book, that after weeks of artistic block, she had been so inspired by the cottage and it's surroundings that she started painting again.

For the past week there has been a Humpback Whale visiting the waters around Fishguard
This is not my photo. I took it from the page Pembrokeshire Porpoise Dolphin and whale sightings.
I was lucky enough to see it when I went down there last weekend. I am planning to go again this weekend coming.
It's only just over an hour's journey from the cottage

Do you want a break away from it all?
These photos were taken on my phone from a hill above the cottage.
The green X marks the cottage....then swipe left to see the landscape to the sea.
It is so quiet at the cottage. Very little passing traffic. No one around. True peace. But only 10 minutes drive from the coastal road and towns, beaches, and touristy stuff!
