Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Towton, fought between the Yorkist and Lancastrian forces, on freezing Palm Sunday in March 1461. Showing the importance of battlefield tactics and the strategic use of Archers.

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Towton, fought on a bitterly cold 29th March 1461.

In my well-known large oil painting of the battle, the Yorkist archers, with the wind and driving snow at their backs, shoot their deadly volleys of arrows into the advancing Lancastrian army, while Edward IV and his knights and men-at-arms move through the ranks to meet their oncoming foe.

Painted in 2002 after a visit to the battlefield on the anniversary that year, when I first experienced just how cold it was on the exposed plateau the battle was fought on. Subsequent personal experience of wearing armour in sub-zero temperature really helped me appreciate just how unpleasant it must have been just to be out in the open in those conditions, before even considering the violence, bloodshed and death that was unleashed on that awful day.

Today is the 700th of The Battle of Byland 1322 and it's featured on the BBC this morning.
Looking forward to the commemoration event tomorrow at the North York Moors National Park , Sutton Bank National Park Centre .

The programme will include battlefield walks, talks on early 14th century arms and armour, combat demonstrations and a memorial ceremony.

The battle which saw King Edward II lose to the Scots was fought at Sutton Bank in North Yorkshire.

Looking forward to joining the good people of this Saturday (13th Aug 2022) for the unveiling of the Battlefield Walk Display Boards. We’ll be doing an Arming the Knight display in the Old Market Square at 10:00 and marching up the high street for the opening ceremony at 11:00. This year is the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Boroughbridge, between the rebel barons led by Earl Thomas Lancaster and King Edward’s II forces led by Sir Andrew Harclay. #1322
