Great weather today, so we headed up to Aberystwyth to do a walk that's been on our list for ages. We have passed the Wellington Monument so often, it was about time we actually walked up to it! This walk follows the banks of the Ystwyth River to Tanybwlch beach, then up Pen Dinas hill. Fab views from the top, over Aberystwyth to the mountains in the distance, and out to sea.

Another fine day, and another beautiful coastal walk. This one starts at the National Trust car park at Mwnt, and is about a half hour drive away. It's a 7km (4.35 mile) circular walk, first heading east along the coast path, before swinging inland through woods and fields, then back to the little 14th century church.
Some steep sections on the coast path.
We saw a glimpse of a porpoise, and some seals 😊

Lovely autumn day, although very windy. We headed out for a walk from New Quay to Llangrannog. This is about 12k (7.6 miles) but there are lots of uphill parts, and one section is quite close to the cliff edge. Beautiful scenery all the way, and plenty of wildlife, we saw a toad, a lizard, a buzzard, a red kite, a kestrel and an impressively hairy caterpillar 😁

Lovely afternoon out near Cardigan. A stroll along the Teifi estuary at Gwbert, and a little way along the coast path. We couldn't go down to the little cove there as we could see a seal pup on the beach, and the mum doing a spot of fishing just off shore 😊
Then just over the border into Pembrokeshire, and another short walk from Ceibwr to the Witches Cauldon. A little bit vertigo-inducing for me in places 😆 but well worth it for the views.

A marlin (I think) washed up on the beach today after the storms 😆
Good to see the sand has finally started to return, after what has been an unusually stony summer on Cei Bach.

Nice circular walk the other day, starting at Aberaeron and taking in some of the coastal path towards New Quay, plus fields and woodland. There are lots of lovely pubs, cafes and shops to visit in Aberaeron, and an hourly bus service if you don't fancy taking the car.

One of my favourite walks in Ceredigion is Teifi Pools. It's on the Cambrian Way long distance footpath, and is about an hour away. The walk starts near Strata Florida Abbey, which is also worth a visit. It's a 6.5 mile circular walk, strenuous in parts, and perfect if you like peace and solitude.

Fantastic day out today on the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge railway from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge. We've been saying for years we ought to go, and finally made it (thanks kids for a wonderful Mother's Day gift!)
The train journey is an hour each way through a beautiful valley, and then at Devil's Bridge is the gorge with amazing falls. There are several hundred steps, some of them very steep, so you do have to be reasonably fit, and ok with heights, but the views are well worth it.

Over the last few months we have had days out away from the coast, because the area has so much to offer as well as the beautiful beaches and coastal villages.
This is the Elan Valley, just over the county border in Powys, a series of reservoirs and impressive dams started in Victorian times to supply water to the growing population of Birmingham.
There are various walks, with parking at different points, as well as a visitor centre and cafe with very helpful and friendly staff.

Golwg y Bryn is an ideal couples retreat for those looking to explore our beautiful corner of West Wales. Set in a rural hamlet just a 10 minute walk from the coast path and the nearest dog friendly beach and only 2 miles from the pretty harbour town of New Quay, with it's little shops, pubs, fish and chip shops and boat trips.
Cardigan Bay is famous for it's resident bottlenose dolphins, which can often be seen from the harbour wall.
Lots of walks from the door, and a string of beautiful coves and beaches within easy driving distance, from Aberystwyth to the North and Cardigan to the south.
The annexe is spacious and bright, and consists of a large open plan living area and fully equipped kitchen, and a king size bedroom with ensuite shower room.
There is a fenced garden area with lawn and decking for sitting out, off road parking and wifi.
2023 rates:
April to September £90 per night.
October to December £80 per night.
Prices include 2 dogs, extra dogs by prior arrangement and £15 per dog per stay.

Finally had a dry sunny day, so we headed a few miles inland for a walk in and around Long Wood above Lampeter. Lots of beautiful mossy old beech trees, views of rolling hills, and an Iron Age fort, plus the added bonus of some sculptures in the woods.

Had a trip out to the Rheidol Valley today, for a short circular walk, taking in Rheidol Falls and the dam for the hydro electric power station. It was very tranquil and picturesque, and I was rather impressed with the fish "lift" that had been installed in the dam to enable them to get upstream to their spawning grounds 😁

A rather blustery 7km walk from Aberaeron to Cei Bach. The mountain in the distance is Pumlumon, the highest peak in Ceredigion. One of my sons wants to climb it next month with me, so I thought I'd get into training! I put my best foot forward and did today's walk in 1.5 hours (it is quite hilly!)
If you fancy Pumlumon, it's only an hour from here, the views from the top are amazing, and you won't see many other walkers.

We did a circular walk from Llangrannog today. This takes in woodland, pastures and a spectacular section of coastline, including Ynys Lochtyn, the little island in the photos. It's a 15 minute drive away, and there is free parking.
The walk is an easy to moderate 5km, with pubs and cafes at Llangrannog, plus a beautiful beach to explore.

Another amazing day in our little bit of paradise! The sun was shining and the sea was like a mill pond, so we took the kayak out for a spin. The photos show some of the rugged coastline between here and Aberaeron. A lot of it is only accessible by boat, although you can walk the coast path above these cliffs.

I've wanted to walk up Pen y Fan for some time now, and last week we did just that. It's the highest peak in South Wales and as you can see, the views on the way up and from the top are spectacular!
Although this isn't in our area, it's only a 1.5 hour drive away, well worth it if you fancy a day out in the hills. And of course there is also Pumlumon, the highest peak in Ceredigion. That one is about an hour away, and also has wonderful views.

We have quite a big tidal range here. These two photos were taken five hours apart today, the first one about an hour after low tide, and the second one at high tide. We provide a tide timetable, so you won't get caught out when planning walks on the beach!

The quickest way to get to Cei Bach beach on foot is a 10 minute walk down a country lane. An alternative route follows a short section of the coast path, through fields and a small wood, before dropping down further along the beach. A bonus is the fabulous view of New Quay as you descend to the beach :)

12/05/2022

This is Traeth Gwyn, a beautiful beach which is dog friendly all year round. It is about a 15 minute walk from Golwg y Bryn, and at low tide you can walk the whole length of it into New Quay.

Like a mill pond off Cei Bach beach this evening, perfect for messing about on the water. Paddle boards and kayaks can be hired at Cardigan Bay Watersports in New Quay, and they offer tuition too.
If you would like to bring your own SUP or kayak, we can provide secure storage.
