Seafield Farm is situated in Argyll within the forest of Knapdale, surrounded by fields and woodland at the head of Loch Sween. We are a little off the beaten track so you can enjoy the walking and wildlife without meeting another person.

Amazing Achnamara skies on wonderful winter days. You could share them too with a visit to Kirkland in March and early April. Check availability on the website - link in profile.

You could combine a basketmaking course with a four day break at Kirkland. On Saturday 2 March, I’ll be teaching simple, willow frame baskets to beginners and those with some experience. There’s nothing quite like transforming willow rods into a beautiful and functional basket. Message for more details.

Posted • A large frame foraging basket and experimenting with cordage and looping. If you’d like to make a simpler frame basket like those in the second image, come to a one day willow weaving course on Saturday 2 March 2024. But be warned - it can be highly addictive. A little bit of weaving going on in between dealing with the harvest from the veg garden and trying to catch some mackerel.

Artmap Argyll Open Studios is rapidly approaching. The workshop will be open on 19 & 20 August and 25 - 28 August but not the days in between.

Just for a change from baskets, here’s our first virgin queen of the year, returning from a mating flight. She’s now in the hive and laying lots of eggs. Our bees are mostly stripey but this queen is complete black and very long. There are no other honeybees anywhere near and the mother bee was striped. Must be a throwback to black bee or Carniolan genetics which we have had in the past. Encouraged no doubt by the amazing weather, all of our colonies have made swarm preparations this year so we have many nuc boxes with queens taken out of the hives and hives with queen cells waiting to emerge. Plans to scale back are not going well.

If anyone wants a 5 frame nuc, please message me. Beekeeping is a complex business - you have to know what you are doing.

Opportunity to spend a day learning about and making your own willow basket on Friday 31 March. Make it part of a short break or just come along for the day. Message for full details. Courses can be arranged for small groups of three or four participants. If you are already a competent maker or artist in any medium, Seafield is perfect for a creative retreat. Message me to discuss the options.

Posted • Using leftover willow from last week’s course to make simple round baskets for fruit or bread proving or anything you want. Working out how to simplify methods to make it possible for a beginner to make something similar in a day. There will be a couple of spaces available on Friday 31 March if you’d like to join in.

We will be hosting this event on Saturday December 10 from 10 am to 1 pm. An enjoyable and relaxed morning creating beautiful wreaths for any occasion. Make it part of a winter break - accommodation available at additional cost.

Come along to make yourself a a beautiful, unique and environmentally friendly wreath for the coming festivities or for any occasion. We will weave wreath bases from willow and decorate them with natural materials from the garden and woodland. Everything will be provided but you can bring anything you would like to include such as cones, shells or dried flowers.

As well as providing holiday accommodation, we run occasional residential basketmaking courses. Rachel Bower , a talented and skilled maker will be teaching this lovely basket on 1 & 2 October.. The view from the Basketmaking Workshop to Byre and Stable Cottages. Like many people living in rural situations, we have more than one string to our bow (or bass guitar in James’s case). Holiday cottages, small scale saw milling and firewood production, willow growing, basketmaking and beekeeping.

It is the final day of today - an annual event when artists across Argyll open their studios and workshops to show where and how they work. Many of them are happy to be visited at other times of the year by arrangement.

So many visitors say ‘What a lovely spot you’ve got here’ and I have to agree. We are at the head of Loch Sween and in the heart of Knapdale Forest.

is welcoming visitors on the Open Studios trail. The workshop is open from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 28 & Monday 29 August and anytime by arrangement. See the willow growing and the baskets made from previous harvests. Browse the work on show in peace and then come and chat if there’s anything you want to know. I’ll be over at the barbecue hut doing something with willow or drinking coffee and enjoying the sun.
