Our final day in the northern heart of Japan was began at the Ken Domon Museum of Photography. Japan’s first museum dedicated to photography, it honours the achievements of Ken Domon, whose documentary-style photography captured the daily lives of people in post-war Japan.

At Sankyo Soko we soaked up the culture surrounding rice production. Once a complex of rice warehouses, they are now museums, shops and exhibitions showcasing the region’s rich heritage.

Thank you again to the and for organising such a brilliant trip. It felt like we experienced authentic Japan, its rich culture and serene way of life.

Our final day in the northern heart of Japan was began at the Ken Domon Museum of Photography. Japan’s first museum dedicated to photography, it honours the achievements of Ken Domon, whose documentary-style photography captured the daily lives of people in post-war Japan.

At Sankyo Soko we soaked up the culture surrounding rice production. Once a complex of rice warehouses, they are now museums, shops and exhibitions showcasing the region’s rich heritage.

On day two of our journey through the northern heart of Japan, we took time to immerse ourselves in the country’s spiritual side.

We took part in a zen meditation experience - zen emphasizes simplicity, self-discipline, and the importance of being fully present in the moment - before walking a pilgrimage route in the gently falling snow on Mt Haguro, relishing its quiet calm.

Our lunch spot, Pino Collina, took us straight back home to the Langhe in Piemonte with its rolling vineyards of Nebbiolo grapes and incredible food.

The afternoon was spent learning about the revered Tsuroka Silk, also known as ‘Samurai Silk’ - the only place in the world dedicated to the entire process of silk production. With a restful stop at the Kamo Jerry aquarium, with its 5m tank of jellyfish.

Yunohama Onsen Isagoya was our home for the evening, providing extraordinary Japanese food and spectacular views over the Sea of Japan.

🗻The iconic Mt Fuji greeted us as we landed in Tokyo. From there, we travelled to the northern heart of Japan, Yamagata, an area nestled between the mountains and the Sea of Japan.

🍚We checked in at Suiden Terrasse, a calm, minimalist hotel floating amidst the paddy fields. The natural textures and low levels, instantly inviting relaxation.

🥢Our first day was packed with culture and the hospitality and gastronomy Japan is so famed for. We ate lunch at Kurayashiki LUNA, an incredible farm-to-table restaurant using the best seasonal produce.

🏯We witnessed a Japanese prayer ritual at Zenpouji temple, where the priests offer blessing, protection or good fortune. We were also lucky enough to watch the skilful craft of shimenawa, the making of a sacred rope made of rice used in Shinto to mark holy spaces and ward off evil spirits. You will often see these at shrines and sacred sites.

We rounded off the day with dinner at Restaurant Nico, known for creative dishes influenced by French & Italian cuisine, using fresh, local produce.

The iconic Mt Fuji greeted us as we landed in Tokyo. From there, we travelled to the northern heart of Japan, Yamagata, an area nestled between the mountains and the Sea of Japan.

We are beyond excited to be travelling to Japan today.

Exploring the incredible food, scenery and culture of this beautiful country has been on our travel bucket list for a long time!
