Day 3 – Uganda. The Gorilla Trekking Day is finally here!!!! 🦍
We had an early start this morning which gave us all the chance to witness the amazing pinky sunrise from the lodge and we then set off to drive a short distance to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. More than 300 Mountain Gorillas live here and that accounts for more than half of the world’s population. Here, we were greeted by a group of local children from the Batwe tribe who were dancing for us and then we were then given a briefing by the rangers.
There are 15 families of gorillas in this forest and they allocate a family to each group (of approx. 8 people), depending on the group's fitness and the location of the gorillas. Ours were a bit far from the base camp and so we had to drive to a different starting point. The gorilla trek can last anything between 45 minutes to 7 hours. Our team was called the Mucunguzi Group after the main Silverback of the family we were looking for.
We all hired porters ($20) to help carry our bags and also to help us when the terrain became difficult. Luckily it wasn’t raining but I would say that you would need to have moderate fitness for this trek (although nowhere near as strenuous as a Kilimanjaro climb!) You also have to wear protective clothing including waterproof trousers, long sleeves and gloves as the jungle is dense and there are brambles. Most of the paths are accessible but when you get nearer to the gorillas then the jungle becomes much denser and deeper – but this was all part of the fun!
We were lucky as we found our gorilla family within 2 hours and you then get to spend an hour with them! I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life! I will post a video later which shows how close I was to the silverback as I was standing at the front of the group. We saw the silverback and the mother and the 3 children, who were so funny and playful. It was simply beautiful and without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life! We had to wear masks when we were close to the gorillas to protect them from contracting any illnesses from us.
We then moved away and found a spot for a packed lunch (provided by the lodge) before our trek back down where we all received a certificate!
On our return to the lodge, the staff took our muddy boots from us and had a drink ready for us too! I was shattered but there was a chance to go to the local Rushaga Community in the later afternoon to see the Batwe tribe that used to live in the forest. They were moved out in 1991 when the forest became a national park. We also visited the local school and here the children sang for us, we tried basket weaving with the local people and visited some of the local houses. It was a very humbling experience.
That night I returned to my room to see my boots sparkling clean and a hot water bottle in my bed! I could get used to this! Looking forward to more adventures tomorrow!

Day 2 in Uganda. So today we had to take an internal flight to reach our Mountain Lodge ready for our gorilla trek tomorrow. Normally, you would fly to Kihihi airport which is closer to the lodge but as the runaway was being resurfaced we had to fly to Mbarara, which meant a much longer transfer, but it was amazing to sit back and watch the beautiful scenery and the Ugandan way of life. We saw the Grey Crowned Crane which is the National bird of Uganda - these birds find a partner and mate for life. We past various market stalls and local children happily waving at us! Finally we reached the Four Gorilla Lodge which is close to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where the gorillas live. After a delicious four course dinner we headed to bed early ready for an early start in the morning. A hot water bottle was warming our beds ready!!! So excited for tomorrow but slightly nervous too!!😍
