A great break from the Cancun tourist traps. This small island is just a 20-minute ferry ride from the hotel zone or from Puerto Juárez Federal Dock, located 5 minutes from downtown Cancun. We booked a tour (with open bar drinks) which should have included snorkelling but the sea climate wasn’t on our side so we enjoy a bit in the island.

Ek Balam
Visit the Maya ruins of Ek Balam, an impressive archaeological site about 25 minutes drive north of Valladolid. You are allowed to climb the tallest ruin which has been partially restored. This gives you a 360° view of the surroundings. (30 min from Valladolid). Fee: 513 MXN (~£23) . Parking 100 MXN (~ £5)

Cenote Zaci
A spectacular sinkhole located in a public park only a few hundred meters from the central plaza, this cenote is traversed by a walking path that passes under a curtain of stalactites in an overhang area.

Chichén Itzá Archaeological Site is the largest of the archaeological cities of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It is one of Mexico's most visited tourist destinations. Fee: 614 MXN (~ £28)

A beautiful site; it was one the largest Maya cities in ancient times, but much is still hidden under lush jungle. It boasts the tallest pyramid of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Nohoch Mul. Muyil boasts a lake surrounded by many Maya constructions. Fee: 70 MXN (~ £3.5)

Dos Ojos Cenote. $400 MXN for entrance only, as of Sept 2022 (~ £16) (good if you bring your own equipment and are ready to walk 3km to the cenote), or $600 MXN (~ £27) for the entrance plus a guide, ride to the cenote, snorkel equipment, lamp, and wetsuit if you want. Set aside around 2 or 3 hours total.

Tulum Ruinas: Tulum Ruins is the biggest ancient building that is standing on the Riviera Maya shore. If you want to avoid the big tour crowds, go before 9:30. The park opens at 8:00 and closes at 17:00 (costs 80MXN ~£4).

El Gran Cenote Admission: $500 MXN (2023) (~ £23). This is the most popular cenote (and therefore the most crowded) in Tulum. A good combination of a deep, cavernous portion, a couple of shallow open-air portions and ample wooden decking with stairs down to the water at several entrance points. This is recommended for first-time cenote-goers. Snorkelling gear is available for rent although prices are a bit steep.

Also we checked the beach at zona hoteleira and to public beach: Playa Santa Fe(after the Tulum ruins) and Playa Paraíso

The best beach was at Cenote Tankah. Private place charges 300 MXN and you can check the small cenote and enjoy the clear beach water
