Medieval Burgundy 🇫🇷
This superb tour, that we last ran in 2022, looks at the abbeys and fortifications of the fabled Burgundy region. Due to popular demand, we are offering it again in October, led by inspiring historian, Julian Humphrys. A highlight is a day at the amazing project at Guédelonn to build a castle 🏰from scratch using 13th century techniques, where you will also have an optional stone carving workshop with hands-on participation. Watch this video to learn more about this inspiring project.

A little rock art at Niaux Cave and an underground boat trip along the subterranean river of Labouiche were the order of the day on our Pre-Historic Rock Art in the Ariege Tour! 🇫🇷
Deep below ground, in the village of Labouiche, flows Europe’s longest navigable underground river. Discovered in 1908 by a local doctor, it’s been open to the public since 1938. Travellers took a boat trip which culminates with a clattering waterfall known as the Cascade Salette, which tumbles into a sparkling turquoise pool. Depending on rainfall, the waterfall’s speed can vary anywhere from 100L to 1500L litres per second.

The first is a tour to Porto and the Douro Valley, taking in the extraordinary almond blossom vistas plus beautiful gardens and manor houses, ancient towns and cities, and a railway journey from Porto to Pocinho which is regarded as one of the most scenic rail journeys in Europe. Another of our private groups has just completed a very successful Gardens of Lincoln tour, exploring some of the region’s most beautiful and historic gardens. Among the many highlights was a visit to the majestic Lincoln Cathedral—and while it may not be the first place you think of when it comes to horticulture, it holds a remarkable botanical connection.
Within the cathedral stands a monument to Sir Joseph Banks—the renowned English naturalist, botanist, and champion of the natural sciences. Banks is best known for accompanying Captain James Cook on his first great voyage (1768–1771), during which he explored regions such as Brazil, Tahiti, and Australia. But his legacy extends far beyond exploration.
In 1766, he first made his mark during a natural-history expedition to Newfoundland and Labrador. Later, as president of the Royal Society for over 41 years, Banks played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of scientific discovery in Britain. He was also an advisor to King George III on the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, sending botanists across the globe to collect plant specimens. Thanks to his efforts, Kew became the world's leading botanical garden—and Banks is credited with introducing over 30,000 plant specimens to Britain.

One of our private groups, Cumnor Gardening Club, is currently enjoying a Gardens of Cheshire Tour with Tony Russell. Wednesday saw them visit RHS Bridgewater, the newest of the RHS gardens and subject of a fascinating TV series on BBC. There was plenty of time to explore the stunning 11 acre restored walled garden, one of the largest Victorian walled gardens in the UK, as well as the Paradise Garden, Asiatic and Mediterranean gardens.
