In Zimbabwe’s Matobo Hills, just south of Bulawayo, lies a stunning landscape of granite kopjes and balancing boulders. Looking at them, recognisable figures appear – like with clouds. You might become aware of ‘the camel’ or ‘mother and child’, for example.

Amalinda Lodge seamlessly blends into these dramatic surroundings, with rooms designed around the natural rock formations. This unique retreat offers a chance to track rhinos on foot, explore San Bushman cave paintings, hike lichen-covered boulders, or even cycle through vibrant local villages. And for Southern Africa history buffs, you can also visit the nearby graves of Cecil John Rhodes and Leander Starr Jameson.

End your day at the spa, or relax alongside Amalinda’s infinity pool, sculpted from a natural granite whaleback.

In Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, Kaingo Camp’s commitment to wildlife photography goes above and beyond.

Each specialist photographic hide has a different focus: carmine bee-eaters; elephants crossing the Luangwa River; even a two-tiered hide, beside a deep hippo-filled pool.

Safari vehicles are equipped with stabilisers, beanbags, and camera dust covers. And as the vehicles are all open-sided, every guest is guaranteed a ‘window seat’ on game drives.”

Kaingo Camp breaks the conventional safari camp mould, operating with a refreshing and relaxing style of its own. Guests can enjoy three activities daily, including game drives and safari walks, led by expert guides.

Consider spending a night in the Elephant Hide Star Bed, a viewing platform right next to a main elephant crossing point. Drift off to sleep, listening to the whooping hyena, chorus of cicadas, and elephants munching.

To witness lion-buffalo interactions, Tanzania’s Katavi National Park is hard to beat.

Katavi also has some of the densest populations of hippos in Africa. During the dry season, the Katuma and Kapapa rivers are the only water for miles. As the game files down to drink, hundreds of hippos congregate in the tiniest waterhole and enormous crocodiles sit out the heat in river-bank mud-holes.

This is one of the best parks in Africa. Its remoteness means that only a handful of small, permanent safari camps share the 4,500km² of wilderness. The untouched nature of this land makes visiting especially rewarding.

In Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains National Park, Greystoke Mahale is a unique, high-end camp situated on a white-sand beach, overlooking the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika.

The main activity at Greystoke – and the reason most people come here – is the superb chimp trekking. It's very professionally run and at all times you're accompanied by a park scout and expert guide who know all of the chimps by name and can explain their behaviour and past history meticulously.

As well as spending time with the chimps and studying their behaviour, and basking on the beach, looking out for lakeshore’s resident hippos aboard a traditional wooden dhow is a lovely way to relax.

Pangolins are among Africa’s most extraordinary safari sightings. These nocturnal, ant-eating oddities are highly elusive - and increasingly rare. If you’re lucky enough to see a pangolin, savour the moment. Shy, quirky and charismatic, sightings of these beguiling creatures are very sought-after by wildlife enthusiasts - but unfortunately also by wildlife traffickers.

Today marks World Pangolin Day, aimed at raising awareness of the plight of the famously elusive, enigmatic little creatures that have the unenviable reputation of being the world’s most trafficked mammal.

Find out more on our blog about these fascinating creatures, the threats they face, the inspiring conservation efforts working to protect them, and the destinations to visit for the best chance of spotting one yourself in the wild:

Botswana’s green season (December–March) is often overlooked, but it has unique advantages. While afternoon showers do freshen the landscape, they rarely disrupt activities or wildlife sightings, especially in the Okavango Delta, where lush vegetation flourishes and baby animals abound. Fewer visitors mean a quieter, more exclusive safari at a fraction of the cost.

In the Kalahari, the vast salt pans of Nxai and Makgadikgadi, usually dry and austere, transform after the rains. Lush grasslands and seasonal pools attract migratory birds in breeding plumage and Africa’s longest land migration of zebras! Similarly, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a vast parched wilderness for much of the year, bursts into life as big herds of antelope gather, pursued by prowling predators. This is prime game-viewing season here: the best time to visit.

Many assume the dry season (April–October) is optimum for a Botswana safari, but seasoned travellers know the green season offers a fresh, rewarding alternative, with dramatic landscapes, vibrant wildlife, and a more exclusive experience.

For a unique take on Tanzania, Rubondo Island – the largest island national park in Africa – is barely touched by tourism and has a strong Jurassic Park feel. It’s a bush and beach experience in one: chimpanzees, elephants, sitatungas, and over 300 bird species to spot, as well as the sandy shores of Lake Victoria to laze on.

With only one safari camp to its name, this tropical island is all yours.

Flying into Rubondo from mainland Tanzania, the views over Lake Victoria are spectacular. Or fly here from Kigali in Rwanda if you want to combine Rubondo Island with a visit to the gorillas.

Nothing on earth compares with the experience of meeting a family of mountain gorillas at home in their forest. Watching a group playing, sulking, teasing each other, eating, or dozing - just like we do - is extraordinary. And the gorilla tracking safaris in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park are among the best in Africa.

Securing permits for tracking gorillas, especially during the popular periods, can be difficult at short notice, so you should plan well ahead. We can make all the arrangements for buying your permits.

Our five-night itinerary, staying at great-value lodges and getting up close with groups of mountain gorillas, is particularly popular. To find out more, visit https://tinyurl.com/ExpertAfrica-Gorillas-Feb25

The silence of the desert offers a break from the noise of everyday life, where constant distractions, tech, expectations and general overwhelm can drown out our thoughts.

In Zambia’s South Luangwa, there’s something very liberating about moving through the park for days without a vehicle, walking between highly individual specialist bushcamps – tiny, top-notch operations with guides who are not only unfathomably knowledgeable but also great company.

Our Perekani Walking Trail strings together five such camps along a trail remarkable for its absence of roads and safari vehicles. Part of this route was once taken by David Livingstone, who was also on foot, as he passed through this area of outstanding wildlife. Discover the untamed beauty of Zimbabwe's Mana Pools National Park with Vundu Camp and Little Vundu - gateways to an incredible safari adventure! 🐘🌅

Both camps are led by expert guides who bring the African bush to life. Flexibility is very much the key; one minute you could be on a game drive, the next breathless with anticipation as you approach a large elephant on foot. Or switch to a canoe to marvel at the wildlife of this iconic river.

Vundu Camp: Situated on the banks of the Zambezi, this charming owner-run camp is spacious and comfortable. Embark on guided walking safaris, glide across the river by canoe, or simply soak in the magic of the African wilderness – and walk in David Attenborough’s footsteps!

If you’ve made it your mission to experience Kenya’s Maasai Mara this year, it isn’t too late to make it happen.

Although the ‘official’ Great Migration season is from July to October, in actual fact it’s a continual cycle of nomadic pasture-seeking, mating, calving and more pasture-seeking, that sees the majority of the herds ever on the move. This makes visiting the Maasai Mara rewarding at any time of the year.

"Camp Kipwe is our favourite place in Namibia. A dream location, outstanding food, we want to return as soon as possible." (M, UK).

Slotted into an outcrop of boulders that are typical of Namibia’s Damaraland region, friendly Camp Kipwe is brilliantly quirky. Bedrooms with rounded walls and curved roofs, this place is unique among Namibian lodges, as well as being good value.

Guests staying here enjoy excursions to Twyfelfontein's remarkable cultural sights, as well as trips in search of Namibia's roaming giants, the desert-adapted elephant.

Including two nights at Camp Kipwe, the Namaqua Chameleon Self-drive Safari is a great introduction to Namibia - a classic loop discovering the most spectacular landscapes and wildlife in the east and north that also neatly fits into a two-week holiday with flights: https://tinyurl.com/ExpertAfrica-Nam-Cham-Jan25

Walking safaris are the original safari.

There's no better way to experience Africa's wilderness areas than on foot. Stepping directly into the African landscape is an experience that can’t be recreated anywhere else.

Away from the comfort of a vehicle your senses suddenly awaken as the bush becomes more ‘real’. This is where humans evolved, and experiencing the sounds and smells just as all our ancestors did can be profound.

If you’ve been on an African safari before, a walking safari offers a fresh way to experience the landscape and wildlife of this intriguing continent, even in areas you’ve been to before.

Family travel to Africa is amazing, and not necessarily as you’d expect.

Adults on safari may be fascinated by the rare predator which has the ears that you can just see twitching 300m away – but children are much more likely to be interested by the gecko on your wall, the giant millipede wandering across the floor, or the giant tok tokkie beetle climbing up the fence post.

Keeping children engaged – and with things that they can relate to – is key on safari.

Find out everything you need to know about family safaris on the Expert Africa website, including FAQs and recommended trips and places to stay: https://www.expertafrica.com/family-holidays/africa
