I'm always learning. Today it's about recycling.

Specifically recycling of flowers.

Apparently, florists who do arrangements for weddings or events will retrieve the arrangements and recycle the flowers and reuse and resell the same flowers for retail, as well as for other corporate bouquets and arrangements.

If you're ok with the idea of cut flowers, this is great at so many levels - including commercially.

I've lived my whole life oblivious to this kind recycling.

Had you heard of this?

Have you heard any other unexpected forms of recycling that surprised you?

A supremely well and sensitively-written article on some Biden scenarios.

My favourite bit: "...William S. Burroughs, who divided humanity into hustlers and marks, put it bluntly: “Hustlers of the world, there is one mark you cannot beat: the mark inside.”

P.S And talking of Scenario Planning, this is something future-proof travel experience designers should be doing on all their client projects.

Not If, When I believe President Biden will announce he is withdrawing from the 2024 race imminently. Just as anybody who’s seen a commercial or a logo believes they’re an expert in advertising and design, I’ve convinced myself I have insights into the inner workings of the Beltway. I don’t....

This is one of my favourite places to be.

So many possibilities.

Here I feel fortunate, grateful, excited and vulnerable all at the same time.

When researching travel projects I often suggest talking to people outside the travel industry.

There are two sides to this winning equation.

1. The internet and ai allow you to trawl oceans of information. However, conversations with fellow humanoids are a richer source of ideas and inspiration. Also, people know people - the original form of ai. And perhaps most importantly, human contact is known to improve mental health and personal well-being so everybody wins.

2. Look outside the travel industry and generally you'll get more interesting, non-obvious, real-world ideas and inspiration rather than touristic 'product'.

I'm in Finland looking for land to build on and the first part of this equation just worked for me.

I asked the gas station We ❤️ Burger lady whether she knew anyone with land to sell. She pondered the question then turned to the lottery guy to ask him. Who knows what the outcome will be but the wheels are turning.

The concierge at my hotel in Hanoi clearly knows a thing or two about experience design.

They sent me to the best Pho place in the neighbourhood via a dodgy Google Maps link. I knew it closed at 11h00 and was determined to get there.

I kept walking and asking people who assured me it was just 100m down the street, then left then right. They, like GPT4o, were confidently hallucinating. For them, it was better to point me in any direction than not to help me at all.

Years ago in the very tip of Puglia I met late Lord Alistair McAlpine who had an the most wonderfully discrete converted convent B&B there. He quipped that he liked telling guests to “get lost”. He was a smart and lovely man.

Of course, I never found the Pho place.

However, along the way I revelled in the unknown, the aimlessness of my quest, being transported to other places and learning a thing or two.

1. The last place I saw buildings wedged this close together was Venice
2. I now know where David Beckham gets his hair done
3. I might have found ‘the one’

I’ve missed the grace and incredibly collaborative nature of this place.
