ULRICH SCHNAUSS - "NOW IS A TIMELESS PRESENT - A RETROSPECTIVE"

hello hallo,
close to the end of 2019 a substantial part of what i've been preparing over the last 2 years is finally ready for release and i have to say: feeling truly relieved - especially concerning a certain 'retrospective box set'... ;-)
a few words on what lead to a situation in which the now imminent release is occurring more than a year later than initially planned:
first of all and that's the way it inevitably goes i guess - transitioning from travelling to doing stuff in the studio back and forth did somehow seem to go a little more smoothly in my 20s...
it's my deficient time management skills which are primarily to blame as far as 'missing deadlines' here is concerned though - at least it's a familiar flaw and not something i'm forced to attribute to increasing age.
in the beginning i was simply excited to be given the opportunity to work on a project like this - not only because it provides an opportunity to wander through the archives, hoping to find one or another worthwhile piece of music that didn't make it onto a release back in the day,
i also saw it as a chance to present 2 albums which sonically suffered from health problems at the time in the way how, in hindsight, i wish they would've appeared initially:
2013's 'a long way to fall' and its follow up 'no further ahead than today'.
it did take a while until i began to realize that re-mixing, sometimes re-recording these albums pretty much from scratch was growing into a profoundly challenging task - especially in the case of 'a long way to fall':
since i was aware even at the time that something 'wasn't quite right', i unfortunately tried to compensate for, as an example, struggling to achieve a suitable mid-range presence by simply layering 3 more elements on top - resulting in arrangements which often had a track count way beyond of what would've been sensible... :-/
looking at the brighter side: to the kind listeners who've retained an interest in my music throughout the years, the box set now not only offers remastered yet faithful and expanded reissues of those first 3 albums 'far away trains', 'isolated place' and 'goodbye' -
but also new and hopefully rewarding perspectives on 'a long way to fall' and 'no further ahead than today'.
any additional interesting bits and pieces from the last 20 years which seemed to benefit from being given their own separate space will appear as part of a selection sharing its name with the box as a whole: 'now is a timeless present'.

furthermore, this seems a good opportunity to put emphasis on the cover design nat urazmetova created (see below) - while i'm usually tying to avoid advertising releases in a too bold manner, i just have to say that i consider this to be one of the most inspiring and inspired artworks my music's been associated with.

some will remember the days when record labels and musicians were concerned about pre-release leaks - nowadays it's all a bit different once again and therefore 'now is a timeless present' will appear first in digital form on december 6 - with the physical box to follow on january 24.

i hope it'll be an enjoyable experience to join me hiking through the last 20 years - and do not want to forget to add that i'm grateful that there still seem plenty of promising paths ahead.

The new live visual performance by Nat Urazmetova ‘Crosspoint’ created in response to Ulrich Schnauss soundscapes, is based on the ideas of the rhizomatic, decentralised and re-configured perception. At the thematic core of the performance is the formation of bio-structures and hypothetical visualisation of the wrapped space, failing algorithms, alternative and intra life forms. The ecological and artificial, extra-terrestrial and underwater, simulated and synthesised, amorphous and elusive coalesce and evolve in the free-flow of improvisation. Unfolding alongside with the sonic counterpart, the visual performance seeks to defy the accustomed modes of perception and points instead to the different narratives of seeing, sensing and relating to the surroundings.

Nat Urazmetova is a London-based visual artist who integrates the cross-disciplinary approach and lens media in her work. Nat is a University of the Arts BA Photography and Goldsmiths MA Digital Media graduate.
