This is a moment of great uncertainty for Kenyans. Their choices are limited, and difficult.

Last week, we had an exhilarating evening at the British Expertise International's 'Flourishing as Female Leaders in International Development' event.

Our very own Annika Burke, ASI Senior Manager and Executive Coach, led an engaging session that resonated with women from across BEI’s membership.

Annika's coaching is dedicated to empowering women in leadership within the International Development Sector.

During the event, she explored the theme of thriving as a leader in this impactful, yet challenging field. The discussion emphasised the significance of finding meaningful work, the risks of burnout, and the importance of having a clear career vision. Participants delved into creating a personal brand that leverages their natural strengths and how fostering creativity can enhance both their energy and their impact.

The event witnessed an incredible turnout, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our members who participated and to Annika for delivering such an inspiring session.

Our conference empowering female entrepreneurs in the DRC has now come to a close with impactful one-on-one coaching sessions.

Like Lovoyo Masikini Bridgette from Watsa territory said: “I will soon retire. And in my entire career, I had never seen such initiative to help women. Oftentimes, when we attend such events, they serve someone else’s interests, but they aren’t really designed to help us, women. I would love to see more initiatives like this one to help us women start and run our own businesses.”

Local women entrepreneurs had the opportunity to discuss their businesses and ideas with our speakers from North Kivu and seek tailored advice and guidance.

We hope that participants leave the conference not only with helpful tips on how to grow their businesses but also with increased confidence and agency to do so.

Thank you to the 100+ women who joined us!

This conference is organised by USAID’s Garamba Alliance Activity, a project we implement. Day 2 of our conference for female entrepreneurs in the DRC is in full swing!

Today, we had a great tasting session of coffee and cacao-based tea led by successful women entrepreneurs from North Kivu. 🍫☕

The session aimed to encourage women from Haut Uélé to dive into processing activities, providing insights on how to start, run a business, source materials, and package products.

It was a fantastic opportunity for participants to get inspired and learn from the experiences of women who have successfully navigated the same path.

HAPPENING NOW! We’re celebrating Women's Entrepreneurship at GAA Conference

We're excited to welcome over a hundred participants to our conference in the DRC today, which is organised by USAID's Garamba Alliance Activity (GAA), a project we implement.

The conference focuses on promoting sound financial management and women's economic empowerment through entrepreneurship in Haut Uélé and is made possible by the support of the American People through the USAID - US Agency for International Development.

➡️ Our Goal: To equip attendees with knowledge on personal and business finance management, inspire entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector, and introduce women to tailored financial products and digital services.

➡️ Highlights: The conference features personalised coaching sessions led by successful female entrepreneurs from North Kivu, showcasing success stories in cocoa and coffee processing.

➡️ Impact: GAA has been a pioneer in introducing the Village Saving and Loan Associations model and supporting women-led SMEs in the Haut Uélé province, creating a ripple effect of empowerment and growth in the cities of Durba and Watsa.

➡️ Challenges: We'll address the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, such as competition with foreign products, sourcing difficulties, and local consumer reluctance.

➡️ New Opportunities: Since 2022, GAA has introduced three large agribusinesses to the Haut Uélé province: Virunga Coffee (VC), Société Commerciale d’Agriculture du Kivu (SCAK), and NASECO. These companies are offering extension services, training, and market opportunities to smallholder farmers in the coffee and cocoa value chains, as well as establishing a distribution network of quality inputs. This event highlights the new opportunities and facilitates profitable market connections between female entrepreneurs and these agribusinesses.

Join us in empowering women and fostering sustainable economic growth in Haut Uélé!

Today marked the beginning of an empowering journey at ASI, as we kicked off the first in a series of workshops for our Women in Leadership Sponsorship Programme, that we recently launched on International Women’s Day.

Spearheaded by our Jennifer Syed (she/her) (Programme Director – APAC), Luke Shaw (Learning and Development Lead), Iain Morrison (Director of People and Talent), and Kirstie Chambers (Programme Manager – APAC), the session was a vibrant platform for our current cohort of sponsees.

The workshop delved into the nuances of sponsorship versus mentorship and explored the attributes of an effective sponsor. It was a unique opportunity for participants who joined from diverse locations including Australia, Thailand, the UK, Kenya, Malawi, Pakistan, and India, to come together, support one another, and start building a robust network within ASI.

Our commitment to fostering female leadership and promoting a culture of sponsorship is just beginning. Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring journey!

Today, Karachi is buzzing with energy and inspiration as we host a full house of aspiring and established women entrepreneurs.

We're diving into the essentials of accounting and taxation – skills crucial for maintaining business records, tracking performance, and understanding tax responsibilities. This knowledge isn't just about compliance; it's about giving these incredible women the tools they need to thrive in the business world.

This initiative is part of our collaboration with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) under the REMIT Pakistan programme, focusing on nurturing and empowering women in business. By equipping them with the right skills, we're not just supporting individual businesses; we're contributing to a stronger, more inclusive economy in Pakistan.

Today, we pause to remember the tragic events in Nairobi in January 2019 and Kabul in January 2014.

We lost cherished colleagues and friends Abdalla Dahir and Feisal Ahmed in Nairobi, and Dharmender Singh Phangurha (Del Singh) and Gnana Nagarajah in Kabul. Their dedication to peace and development in some of the world's most challenging environments inspires us still.

As we reflect on their contributions and the precious lives lost, we reaffirm our commitment to continue their work with resilience and determination. Their legacies remind us of the importance of our mission in fragile contexts.

With deepest sympathy and respect, and in solidarity with the families and loved ones of all those affected, we remember their commitment, courage, and aspirations for a peaceful world for all.

May their memory continue to inspire us.
