My Favourite Memories in South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, and Zambia.

Travel is often about the experiences that leave a lasting impression, the moments that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

For me, Africa is a treasure chest of such memories. Each country offers something unique, and I’ve been fortunate to witness some extraordinary moments in South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, and Zambia.

Let me share a few of my favourite memories in Africa including an epic animal showdown and my own wedding like no other.

Controversially my favourite memory of sailing in Greece doesn’t begin in Greece. It doesn’t even particularly involve sailing if I’m being honest.

It begins as a young child in the wet and windy Lake District where every weekend, from April to October, along with my family we ‘did boaty stuff’. For us children this involved swimming in Ullswater (even on the hottest day only the top two inches of water made it to a balmy 14 degrees), building dens ashore amongst the trees, reading Famous Five books and racing in our inflatable dinghies.

I then discovered that ‘boaty stuff’ could be a job…

I then discovered that you could do ‘boaty stuff’ for a job, somewhere where the sun shines more than it rains…

Val’s memories of South America include posing jaguars, Cape Horn, and lots of dancing…

My first time in Patagonia was spectacular! A few days in Torres del Paine, followed by an expedition cruise through Chilean Antarctica.

Life onboard the ship, and discovering some of earth’s most remote places was exhilarating. But it was setting foot on Cape Horn that still gives me shivers (although I missed out on the penguins!)

The memory of the Chilean navy officer and his family welcoming us, reading the poem on the Albatross memorial, and feel like I was truly at the end of the world, is my favourite memory in Chile. And one of my fondest of all time.
