The weather was kind on Sunday for the 'Musical Hit Parade' heritage tour of the High Road.
We looked at the sites of nightclubs, record shops, 'the Tottenham Sound', sound systems, famous Tottenham music stars.. and the contribution that Tottenham has made to the music scene.

We were fortunate to take a peak into the foyer of the former Tottenham Palace, which is currently used as a church. Photos below. Copyright Tottenham Heritage Walks.

Not to be missed..

Not to be missed!

We are delighted to be opening our new exhibition for the start of 2024 - 'The Two Williams: Violin Maker and Photographer' at Bruce Castle Museum & Archive on 17 January.

Bringing together original objects and photographs for the first time in well over 100 years, it tells the extraordinary story of world-class craftmanship, evocative photographs of Tottenham and a secret that went to the grave…

You can find out about the secret and the two remarkable men central to this story: William Thomas Reed Atkinson (1851-1929), one of Britain's greatest violin makers, and the photographic artistry of his son William Thomas Camper Atkinson (1883-1971), of Church Road, Tottenham.

Come along and see the beautiful violins made in Tottenham by William Snr, alongside the local photographic views by his son William Jnr, capturing in his portraits and scenes the faces of those who lived and worked here at the beginning of the 20th century.

With thanks to the Atkinson family members, especially Andy Thomas, Peter Thomas and Ron Atkinson for their kind and generous support and lending of family collections.

Look out for events related to the exhibition in the coming months at Bruce Castle Museum & Archive.

Hope to see you at Bruce Castle soon!

We’re In Business – Walking Tour of the High Road for the Tottenham High Road Takeover
Monday 29 January, 12.15pm
Free, booking essential

Our Munch and Listen this month is out and about, taking us on a tour of Tottenham High Road with Carol Hebbs of Tottenham Heritage Walks. Guiding us down the High Road looking for clues of yesteryear, Carol will share memories and stories of growing up in Tottenham in the ‘60s, the days of the department stores and and half day closing. In its ‘60s heyday Tottenham was the place to shop. You could find anything you needed, from a new suit to wear to the Royal, to record shops for the latest vinyl releases or your daily shopping in Sainsburys with its marble counters.
This walk will last approximately 90 minutes.
Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable footwear.
Meet: 12 noon (for 12.15pm start) by the clocktower main entrance at Bruce Castle Museum.
Please book your free ticket for this walking tour via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/were-in-business-walking-tour-of-the-high-road-for-tottenham-takeover-tickets-795959043927?aff=oddtdtcreator

We are so disappointed, but due to the yellow weather warning in London tonight we have taken the decision to cancel the walk this evening. We were hoping to continue but we cannot take the risk. Safety is our priority.

Cabmen's shelters are rare survivors of an ornamental building type very specific to the operation of hansom cabs in London. 💚

The Northumberland Avenue cabmen’s shelter was built in 1915 by the Cabmen’s Shelter Fund, based on Maximilian Clarke’s original design of 1882.

It's one of 13 examples to survive in London – the majority of these are listed. It represents one of the few relics of the horse age to remain in use, albeit now for taxi drivers.

The internal fittings are predominantly modern, as is common amongst the remaining London cabmen’s shelters. However, the original open-plan kitchen and cabmen’s mess remains, as does the original roof structure beneath the suspended ceiling.
