In the 1970s you could easily find yourself sharing a chairlift with Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, David Niven or Princess Grace of Monaco. But times change and uncertain snow cover at this low altitude means skiing usually comes second to socializing in Gstaad. The pistes are tame but the amount of skiing covered by the regional lift pass begins to compensate for the absence of gradient, making Gstaad, with its incredible walking and hiking trails, the perfect place for non-skiers. Le Grand Bellevue has just reopened after a change of ownership and an extensive 1 year refurbishment and it looks great.

St Moritz has been an important spa town since the Middle Ages. This is one of those places which sums up the word jet-set, having featured in Bond films and in classic songs like 'Where do you go to my lovely' in the 1960s...and it's still the place to ski and be seen. Its lakeside setting may be beautiful but the resort could never be called pretty. Like many Swiss resorts, it comes in two parts - in this case Dorf and Bad, 3km apart. Dorf, on the lakeshore, has most of the opulent hotels, restaurants, shops and clubs. Sleepy St Moritz Bad only woke up a few years ago with the opening of the giant Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski. The iconic Cresta Run should be on everyone’s bucket list and the St Moritz Polo on Snow (pictured) is quite an experience (30th January to 2nd February).

Steep couloirs and huge moguls can be found around every corner in Verbier, attracting a high-level of skier. Within hours of a fresh snowfall you will find tracks on even the most unattainable-looking slopes. The nightlife and après ski are almost as famous as the skiing with the newly opened W Verbier set to be the hottest addition to the resort.

It’s Ski Week at Globalista so we will be outlining our favourite ski resorts:

The Trois Vallées is the largest ski area in the world and home to arguably the most diverse ski resort of them all – Courchevel – the St Tropez of ski towns. The exciting, varied terrain caters to all levels and abilities, the après ski is sensational, there is a wide selection of luxury hotels on offer including 2 of France’s 8 ‘Palace Hotels’ (6 stars) as well as 7 restaurants, which share 11 Michelin stars between them, making Courchevel THE resort for foodies.

Traditionally Courchevel has attracted a very British clientele however since Roman Abramovich tried to buy the entire village of Courchevel 1850 in 2003 the crowd has been markedly different, which is reflected by the exorbitant prices. We are excited to check out the newly opened, elegantly designed: L’Apogee Courchevel, which promises to be the hottest new opening in the resort this year.

Kansas City is neither in Kansas; nor, when you are there, does it seem like a city. The suburbs sprawl for miles, but the area of interest is relatively small. It's not the sort of place many people are drawn to for its own sake, but if you do find yourself there you'll discover a friendly, fun cit...
