Angela Faulkner Welcome to the page of British designer, Angela Faulkner

Having spent her childhood in the verdant Worcestershire hills and the years since in the beautiful South Shropshire countryside, the natural patterns and themes found in her art are a product of a lifetimeโ€™s cultivation and immersion. To trace the development of her style, we must recall her first project: a prize-winning garden, which provided a platform for her both to explore large-scale flora

l design and to grow a myriad of rare and exquisite flowers, some of which were chosen for the Daily Telegraphโ€™s garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. Taking inspiration from her garden, she would recreate individual flowers using watercolors. Her talent for this led her to exhibit her studies at the Royal Horticultural Society in London on two occasions, winning coveted prizes both times. The next landmark in her career is the establishment of the greetings cards company: The Angela Faulkner Collection Ltd. Greetings cards proposed new challenges such as how to condense a design to a small area, yet still convey interest and appeal. This technique has since been refined over twelve ranges of cards and the translation of designs into various new formats such as aprons, oven gloves, cake stands, cup and saucer sets, place mats, trays, jugs, and coasters amongst others. It is with this extensive repository of experience and versatility as a foundation that she has recently made her move into what is perhaps the most exciting venture yet: textiles.

Easter is fast approaching so I thought I would share my latest image of a leveret aka "Lucky" with you. My son found him orphaned one harvest time so brought him home to try and save. We syringe fed him cows milk, as he gained strength he would bounce out of his box in the kitchen and hop along into the sitting room where he would nudge me to be fed. He was an absolute joy and I have had much pleasure in recapturing his likeness from a photo I took. I created the image using Caran d'Ache lightfast pencils, this is my first attempt at using this media and I have been delighted with the results.

I saw this beautiful Hellebore on Mr Farmer's Fruit & veg stand in Ludlow market and couldn't resist the shades of pink and lime green flowers. I thought you'd be interested to see how I build a picture up, so here is a series of images that takes you through all the different layers of paint that build up to give the finished picture. I will post the finished picture in a few days as I have some leaves left to add to complete the composition.

I have to confess to being a lousy Face booker, never posting as often as I should as Iโ€™m always too busy bringing product to market, painting and running the company but I was thrilled when 2 of my agents phoned to tell me weโ€™d been featured, not once but twice in the โ€œwhatโ€™s hotโ€ section of Progressive Greetings magazine. For those who donโ€™t know, this is a section where the industry magazine phones up some respected retailers and ask them to put forward the companies that produce product that sells really well in their shops, not only did I get a mention for my cards but also my china so thank you to Sue Nicholson, owner of Just To Say, Whitley Bay and Emma Woods, owner of Miss Daisy, Rochford.

My Story

There was a time, many years ago, when Angela coloured in a picture of a cat. It bore the correct colours of a calico coat and her primary schoolteacher awarded her great praise for this marvellously astute achievement. This was because all the other children grabbed hold of the greens, blues, reds, purples, and generally more exciting colours before she got there. Nonetheless, her career as an artist had begun.

Back to the present, Angela has well over 300 paintings to her name, medals from the Royal Horticultural Society, and a company that distributes these designs - as well as those of other collaborative artists - all over the world in the form of greetings cards, gifts and associated items, ceramics, and textiles. Working from her studio in the Shropshire Hills, inspiration is never far away. Like the page to follow her story!
