Many hands make light work...

Catching up with the team from York Glaziers Trust today at Rochdale Town Hall, as they offer up and reinstall the stained-glass sections in front of the new protective secondary environmental glazing.

24/07/2024

Exciting news! is currently working on reinstalling the 3 sets of stained glass windows at Rochdale Town Hall's Council Chamber. These windows have been meticulously restored at their workshop near York Minister and are now being fitted with a secondary protective environmental glazing. This innovative addition will not only reduce condensation build-up on the interior surface of the stained glass but also prevent microbial growth, ensuring the windows remain in pristine condition for years to come.

Stay tuned for updates on this fascinating restoration project!

We're excited to announce that all three directors of HHSmith are embarking on an incredible journey to raise funds for Christie's Charity. This July, we'll be cycling from Manchester to Blackpool to support the vital work Christie's does for cancer patients and their families.

Your generous donations will go directly towards providing essential services, ground-breaking research, and world-class care for those affected by cancer. Every mile we pedal is fuelled by your support, and every penny raised brings us closer to a world free from the fear of cancer.

Join us in making a difference! Please donate and help us reach our fundraising goal. Together, we can support Christie's in their mission to save lives and provide hope.

Few photos from our teams training with ET Hire.

The purpose of the morning was to demonstrate new equipment with some training mixed in. The team at ET Hire had a large live display the latest equipment that is available for the team to hire for site work.

"We first demonstrated some work at height solutions and finished the morning by looking at up-to-date dust prevention on-site. Three of our trained directors hosted the morning." - Marcus Gunning, Managing Director - ET Hire Ltd and Site Access Services

“Works included building new planting stations, new composting system and much needed repairs and revamps to the poly tunnel and the potting shed roof. The works were very well received and the lads enjoyed working in such a pleasant setting” - Padraig O’Neill // Site Manager

Great project to be part of ⚒️👋🏼

S2r and our Council partners Kirklees Parks & Green Spaces were happy to welcome Padraig O’Neill from HH Smith & Sons Co Ltd to the Peace Pit Polytunnels and our Cemetery Road Community Allotment earlier this week. On a site visit for an upcoming corporate responsibility joint venture, Padraig loves the outdoors himself and is quite excited about HH Smith & Sons Co Ltd staff giving some of their time to our projects: “The guys will love it down here. It will be nice for them to work in a peaceful place like this.” We look forward to having them on site!

* The Brief
Manresa House is owned by the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits) and functions as the provincial novitiate for the UK, Ireland and the Low Counties ,where novices spend the first two years of their training to become brothers or priests. The building is also the permanent residence to several senior members of the Jesuit community . H.H Smith were awarded the contract to provide updated, improved and sustainable accommodation that will allow the novitiate to grow and thrive into the future.
The works included the demolition of all existing buildings, other than the main Villa (built circa 1840), which was refurbished. Along with the construction of a new 2 storey residents wing, a single storey guest wing, a new commercial kitchen with dining/sitting area, a connecting knuckle building with meeting
rooms, and a new place of worship/chapel building, plus all associated drainage and landscape works.

* Key Points
Sustainability was a fundamental part of the project and issues of energy reduction, generation, orientation and flexibility were key drivers of the project. The works included a significant hard and soft landscaping package, and a number of ornate bespoke finishes were required to the building envelope,
which included zinc roofing and terracotta rain screen cladding.

* Challenges
The site was situated in a quiet residential area, therefore sensitive practices were adopted to avoid any disruption. The presence of Asbestos in the existing structure required close consultation with HSE and specialist removal contractors. The skills of H.H. Smith’s specialist trades men, who have undertaken many heritage projects previously, were essential to seamlessly link the complexities and different techniques required for restoration, with the bespoke demands of the new build elements of this project.

Project Value £5.6m // Contract Period 30 months

We were delighted to be involved in the recent Charity event for The SickKids Foundation where Sedgley Tigers defeated Leicester Lions in a brilliant entertaining 28-20 win.

We sponsored 4 shirts / players who are all currently employed by HH Smith meant we raised a total of £600.

The SickKids Foundation is something that means a lot to us as a family due to the continued work and efforts of Doctor Jimmy Stewart. Jimmy has been a great family friend and a huge supporter of Sedgley Park Rugby Club so it was only fitting to support his Foundation.

Alex lives locally to Haigh Hall and the project provided the opportunity for him to join the HH Smith team as an apprentice whilst also continuing to study Civil Engineering at Wigan & Leigh College.
