Little road trip this evening to Mills Observatory which is now open for another season, and it’s the perfect spot to explore the universe from just across the Tay in Dundee.

Set atop Balgay Hill, it was Britain’s first purpose-built observatory and is still completely FREE to visit. Tonight there were wonderful views of Saturn with the rings clearly visible and Jupiter with four moon's all in a row.

Open Monday-Saturday, drop by and let experts guide you through the wonders of the night sky (weather permitting). 🌌

We share our county name Angus, with the name of the Cailleach’s fairest son, Aonghus (pronounced the same.) In our folklore, Aonghus is the fairest son of the Cailleach, who rules over Winter.

In our stories Aonghus wakes up at the end of winter, after having dreamt of Brigid, also known as Brìde, who rules over Spring and Summer, or from Beltane to Samhain for those interested in the traditional festivals. You can hear the story of the Cailleach and the changing seasons, written and narrated by local storyteller Eileen Budd, at https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0hl7tf6.

The story is told in Scots language and if it wasn’t for a previous Forfar resident called Rev John Jamieson we might have lost this language completely. Jamieson was Reverend in Forfar in the 1780’s, around the same time he wrote an extremely popular anti-slavery poem, called the Sorrows of Slavery.

His most famous work was published in 1808, when Rev John Jamieson published the very first Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language in two volumes. He had spent years compiling it, travelling up and down the country, taking note of Scots words in the Borders, the Central Belt, the Highlands, the Islands and of course, in Angus!

He recorded multiple dialects too, from the formal Lallans to the iconic Doric. His dictionary was the first complete written record of Scots language, and his dictionaries have helped to preserve Scots as a living, spoken language to this day.

We're open until 7pm this evening for After-hours with the geese! Come along to spend the evening with us birdwatching, and enjoying the sunset. Our gift shop and coffee shop will be open until 7pm too!

Unfortunately we've made the decision to cancel our goose-watching events for tomorrow evening (Sunday 20th October) due to the weather warnings from Storm Ashley.

We'll be closing at our usual 5pm tomorrow, and the Pink Sunset attendees have already been emailed to advise them of the cancellation.

We don't want our visitors and staff to be travelling in dangerous conditions, and it's unlikely the geese will be travelling in the dangerous conditions too! They tend to hunker down in fields overnight during storms, instead of coming back to their roosting sites.
