May Her Soul Rest In Peace πŸ’”πŸ’”

In the UK, there is what we call LOLER regulation 1998 (Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment) and PUWER 1998 (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulation).

These regulations guide any organisation that uses work and lifting equipments like Elevators, Hoists, Standing Aids, Lifts, etc. Accorsing to the regulation, these equipments must be serviced every 6months to 1year, unfailingly and PAT testing must also be done every 6months. I knew about this regulations long time ago when I was working in Nursing care homes. We were taught LOLER and PUWER during yearly training, so every one knew about the dos and don'ts

Any organisation that fails to follow the regulations will either pay hefty fine, be closed down (if someone dies) or the Directors face prosecution for negligence and manslaughter. With this in mind, about 99% of organisations ensure the regulations are follow to the latter and no violation.

If what happened to that Medical Doctor in Lagos happens in the UK, by now, the hospital board of directors and equipment provider will be in police custody by now.

Until we start to make people face the consequences of their action or inactions in naija, sad events like this may not stop....in Rufai's voice, it will happen again...

May the soul of the innocent Doctor rest in peace, its unfortunate that Nig.eria just happened to her πŸ’”

Canada 2023 Holiday Experience...Tim Hortons (Not) To The Rescue

At exactly 3pm (Canada time), we landed at YYZ Airport in Toronto. The heat that greeted me was synonymous to maiduguri heat. It was summer time, but I wasn't expecting summer, in a country synonymous with extreme winter, reaching -45degrees sometimes, to be that hot.

What a beautiful country Canada is! Its so neat and people are very respectable and orderly.

Toronto Airport is the only airport I have seen that is 100% automated (no single human interaction). I thought Heathrow was automated, but u will still see some staff waiting behind to assist u with one or two things, but not at YYZ.

Who would I ask if I was stock? I asked myself. The crowd reminded of Dugbe market in Ibadan. Everyone was moving gradually to occupy any available machine.

The simple task u needed to do to move to the next stage, where immigration officers were already waiting to question you on why u were in Canada, was place your passport on the machine for scanning, then you input your data and scan your visa if u have one or input your electronic visa reference number (in my own case). Once those were done accurately in conformity with the already completed online form, the machine would drop down and take your picture. If the machine wasn't o.k with your photos, it would continue to snap until it was satisfied.

Then a print out would be generated with a reference number, thats what u would take to the immigration section for clearance and stamping, before u would get your luggage.

As I completed this task, got to the immigration, the immigration asked why I was in Canada, if i had friends and how many weeks I intended to stay? On holiday, yes, I have few friends and i am here for just two weeks, I replied. The next thing is, welcome to Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦. Yipeeeeee, mo bo lowo won finally.

I was very famished, I looked around thinking I would see an African restaurant to eat nice Amala and ewedu, with correct ogufe...nibo, all the restaurants nearby were either Asian restaurants or proper Canadian restaurants. I couldn't hold the hunger anymore, i went to a local Tim Hortons (a Canadian fast food chain, similar to McDonald's in America).

A tiny thinny burger with a drink cost me 15 fuc.king CAD, then plus tax ontop. Wetin dey shele? Shey nah like this una dey exploit people for this country? I shouted, the customers in the queue behind me looked at me, in their mind, they would be like, where is this JJC from.

Wahala, I no send una, I work hard to earn my Β£, so no one should use bread steal my "omi obe"(soup). This is how we operate here, u pay tax ontop of everything in Canada. Ha! Canada yi lagbara o, e be like say I no go even spend up to the 2 weeks I intended to spend lol...I said that in my mind.

Did I actually have a choice? I was on holiday anyways, so I had better get used to the new system or go back to my YouK...

To be continued.

The State Of Naira...

I was having a discussion with one of my friends when I was in Nigeria, that a devalued currency will Jack up the prices of goods and services, hence everyone would suffer the consequences.

How did we get to such discussion? He was of the opinion that, a common man has no biz with naira devaluation, after all, we don't spend foreign currency in nigeria.

I knew he lacked the knowledge of elementary economics - Kudos to Prof Ayinde on AEC201. Chai, I gbadun that course enh, I had "A" in it...doubt me at your own "mumuism" πŸ˜…

I used two analyses to buttress my point. 1) As we speak, Nig.erias debt is over N70t (about $70b - using 1$ = N1k for instance). Now lets assume naira is further devalued to N1500/$, that means d debt will leapfrong from N70t to about N105t...meaning we have more debt to pay, not because we borrowed more but because of currency devaluation. This is the main reason why U.S, UK, EU, Japan, etc will never devalue their currency, no matter what. They will rather look inwards to generate more money through taxes and juicy visa regimes, to milk developing countries dry.

2) If the cost of importation was N1b b4 the devaluation, going by the same analogy in point 1, there would definitely be an increase in cost of importation from N1b to N1.5b. So who pays for the increament/difference? Is it not the consumers/end users?

After telling him these analyses, he gave in and he started cursing all Naija leaders for d level they have brought the country. I told him cursing them wouldn't be d solution, the solution is for him to pray for the present leaderships to get things right.

Why am I making this post? Checking the rate of forex this morning, I started to wonder the difficulty an ordinary Nig.erian is going through, having spent some 6weeks in naija recently and saw things for myself.

I wasn't so empathetic and neither was a surprised when I noticed hat number of able bodied beggars on the streets has quadrupled. Initially I was giving them alms, but when I noticed the number kept increasing, I stopped...I also have family members who need help.

Its not as if these people are lazy, He.ll No, the prob is there are no jobs for them to do. Every opportunity to japa, is seen as an easy way out of the economic malaise.

A friend of mine came to meet me where I was lodged, he came to ask about my japa biz. In his words, "Ayo, honestly I ought to have travelled some 6yrs ago, but it was one "egbon" (area brother) that discouraged me from it...saying my biz would collapse if I travelled. But could u believe that, that egbon has relocated to UK with his family in Dec last year".

My friend is now regretting not taking a bold step that he would have taken some 6yrs ago. Dont get me wrong, I am not advertising a japa plan in this post, and neither am I discouraging anyone from staying put in naija if u so believe in the country.

My point is, if u think leadership's decision has no effect (positively or negatively) on you, you might be living in share ignorance....u had better wake up and smell the coffee.

Gov Adeleke refused to pray at Eid cos Sen. Bashir was sitting in same roll as him. Gov Abdulrasak of Kwara prayed at the back during Eid...what happens to equality b4 God? Now I can pinpoint why I love Kwara Gov this much.
