🌊 The Legend of Warrenpoint: A Name Born of Bravery and Heritage 🌊

Legend has it long ago, on the misty shores of what we now know as Carlingford Lough, there was a stretch of rugged land where the Gaelic clans held their ground against invaders and the wild forces of nature.

This land jutted out like a spear into the waters, a natural stronghold for those who called it home.

Over time, it came to be known as Rinn Mhic Gilla Rua—the Point of the Red Giolla’s Son—a name that carried whispers of ancient bravery and family honour.

The legend goes that the Red Giolla, a fiery warrior with a mane as red as dawn, had a son who defended the land with unmatched valour.

Generations of the family became known for their fearless defense of the lough, standing as guardians against all threats that sought to enter their sacred waters.

The “Point of the Red Giolla’s Son” became a symbol of that undying spirit and protection, a landmark both revered and respected.

As the centuries passed, the name shifted with the changing languages and stories. Gaelic turned to English, and Rinn Mhic Gilla Rua evolved into the name Warrenpoint.

The headland stood as a reminder of the resilience and pride of those who came before, marking the spot where the land met the sea in a union of strength and heritage.

I was on a boat and started to feel the light of the sun and the overwhelming water on me, I wanted to catch that pure energy of the elements, the dramatic and majestic power of nature.

Haulbowline Lighthouse celebrates its 200th year anniversary this year. An iconic aid to navigation, it is built on a wave-washed rock that emerges only at low tide.

Located at the mouth of Carlingford Lough, it plays a crucial role in guiding maritime traffic in the area. Construction of Haulbowline’s 34m stone tower was a remarkable achievement at the time as it sits in a tidal area with fast flowing currents. https://loom.ly/53444Pc

Come watch the flotilla of boats heading up the Newry Canal this Saturday! Boats should start arriving at the Victoria Lock Gates at around 4pm.

It's very interesting to see the locks in operation! The lock keeper will direct boats into through the first gate - then close the gate behind them... Then he pumps water into the lock, raising the water level, and floating the boats up to the height of the canal! When the water and the boats are at the same level with the canal - then hell open the gate to let the boats move forward into the canal. It's well worth coming to see that!

Then! If you're up for it! Walk / Cycle along with the boats by using the Greenway!

And most importantly 😏 BRING THOSE ARMAGH FLAGS 🥳🟧⬜️ and wave at the boats!!

All welcome - and totally free. This is all happening on YOUR canal and YOUR greenway. Make the most of it! And thank you for having us Carlingford lot 😊🫡

See you there!!!
