Oystercatcher, Isle Of Whithorn

Oystercatcher, Isle Of Whithorn Holiday let in beautiful harbour village of Isle of Whithorn. Sleeps 6. Sea views. Parking. Nearby pub/restaurant/shop/beaches.

Three bedrooms, games room, kitchen, living room, bathroom and shower room (both with toilets), utility, enclosed garden. Resting in the quaint coastal village of Isle of Whithorn, is this lovely mid terrace, reverse-level cottage, Oystercatcher. A Victorian (circa 1850) Grade B listed house, with Victorian internal features, in a beautiful conservation area. Set out over three floors and sleeping

up to six guests, Oystercatcher is an ideal family and/or friends setting for a getaway to this part of the beautiful Machars Peninsula. The ground floor of the property has a cool games room, where you can challenge your loved ones to a game of table football, chess or other board games. Or for those looking for something quieter, enjoy a book or two from the collection. There are also two ground floor bedrooms: a blue double bedroom to the front with storage for guests’ holiday apparel; a rear bedroom with wooden bunk beds, built in wardrobe and a large wooden mirror. Access to the enclosed, private garden is from the rear ground floor level. Climbing upstairs, there is a galley style kitchen with everything you need for a self-catering stay. A spacious living/dining room, which can be warmed by the electric, mock-woodburning stove, as you enjoy an evening meal around the dining table. You can also admire the views of the harbour & sea from the window seat or enjoy an evening in front of the television. The first floor also boasts two bathrooms: one with a bath and one with a walk-in shower, so guests can get ready for another cracking day out or an evening at the nearby pub/restaurant. Moving up to the second floor, indulge in the king-size bedroom, with a chair facing the lovely sea views from the window, and a CD player/radio, if you fancy. Outside there is roadside parking at the front of the property and a gravelled garden, to the rear, where guests can get a barbecue sizzling. The property is just a stone's throw away from the historical Isle Head and the thriving harbour, with the pub sitting on the shoreside (outdoor seating available). The nearby café/shop, with views over the sea and harbour, is a great choice to grab any self-catering essentials, a lunchtime snack or a fresh coffee and homemade cake or two. Nearby Wigtown is best known as being Scotland’s National Book Town with over 20 book related businesses. There’s a fabulous, nearby golf course, which is perched right on the shoreline and has stunning views over to the Isle of Man and The Rhins of Galloway Peninsula. You can also visit a nearby nature reserve, perfect for birdwatching. If you like beach life, the nearby choices offer: sea fishing opportunities; sun-bathing beauty spots; pebble beaches with caves; pristine sand stretches, where you can see horses gallop from time to time; rockpools with superb marine life and much, much more. Straight out the door of Oystercatcher is a fabulous walk along the rocky coastline which gradually rises to some stunning cliffs. The flora, fauna and sea birds can be tremendous – so bring some binoculars. If you’re lucky, you can spot grey seals, porpoises and even whales! There are plenty of other excellent walks in the area. For those of you who are active, there are many road cycling routes all around, with relatively quiet roads. Mountain bikers have a world class range of choices including the nearby Glentrool and Kiroughtree (7Stanes) visitor’s centre and the Galloway Forest Park which is a “dark skies” national park – great for stargazers. If you like playing in the sea, with the house being right on the coast, you can bring your kayaks, surf boards, wet suits, buckets and spades. There’s a boat launching point at the harbour (by arrangement). Local scuba divers go out from the harbour here - and you can even buy local crab or lobster for your dinner, from a licenced fisherman! A little further away, you can discover the town of Newton Stewart with its museum, cinema, riverside eateries, and the nearby Knockman Wood - which is the largest natural reserve of ancient woodland in Southern Scotland. If you like going for a day out, there are amazing (botanic) gardens, lighthouses and a wide variety of eating experiences to suit most preferences – including fish and chips - by the sea of course! Also in the area you can discover the scenic St. Ninian's Cave, enjoy a day out at Monreith Animal World, or take a stroll around the 17th century seaside Galloway House Gardens. For a picturesque trip to this part of Scotland, choose Oystercatcher as your home-away-from-home. Once you discover it, you’ll want to come back time and time again!

Harbour lovers...

Donna's dad was a sea fisherman for most of his working life....and so when they went on holidays, he couldn't resist taking them to any harbours they might pass...just to have a wee look at the "fishing boots"!

His 3 lasses might well have preferred a shopping trip or horse riding instead, at that time, but when you grow older, you can look back on holiday memories with a new perspective. ;-)

So if you like a harbour or two, then we have a fair share of them in D&G - one within a short walk of Oystercatcher, Stranraer Harbour , Kirkcudbright Harbour , Portpatrick Harbour just to mention a few...

In my spare tyre @$ #@ TIME (I mean...ahem...) I like to try to keep fit….well, after all, I’m getting on and the waistline seems to be increasing in line with time 🤣😆😝

So even though holidays should also be about cake, tasty food and maybe the odd tipple, I think a spot of exercise can keep the body and mind in harmony.

A stroll on the beach maybe; a coastal path jog...possibly; a swim (in the pool, sea, loch)...yeh, appealing!; a bike ride (say in Galloway forest or one of our many quiet roads)...mmm, sounds fun - or whatever you fancy.

If you need some more inspiration, before your perspiration, just give us a holler.

Tower go-ers…

Ours, powers, showers, who doesn’t love Towers!

Never to be short in resources in D & G, have a tour to see Sorbie Tower, Drumcoltran Tower , Orchardton Tower or Neilson's Tower

Like Jimmy Cricket famously said…. "And there’s more" 😉

Horsey lovers…

We owned a big ol’ cuddy called Ron, for the last 30 years, so, as you’d imagine, we’re very fond of them.

Having a wee canter, a lesson or full on gallop could well appeal to you, while you are holidaying with us, at the Isle.

Not too far away, you have a few choices, including: Three Lochs Riding Stables (https://www.threelochsridingstables.com/), Barstobrick Riding Centre & Brighouse Bay Trekking (https://brighousebaytrekking.weebly.com/index.html)

So giddyup, grab your jodhpurs, hat and you whinny look back!

Meet Ozzie - our new mascot!

Hand drawn by our very skillful and talented friend Betty Collins.

You'll see his best side captured and framed (but not stuffed) in our hallway at Oystercatcher. Thank you Betty - we absolutely love it! 😁🥰

Lighthouse lovers…

Lighthouses are champion! Pillars of strength. Out there in all conditions, facing down bad weather to warn seafarers of peril. They are mysterious and create curiosity – wondering about the goings on and how many lives they may have saved….

About 30 minutes from Oystercatcher is Killantringan Lighthouse and then heading north from there, you have the tremendous Corsewall Lighthouse. Going south from there, there is the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse – tremendous views over to Ireland and Isle of Man. While you are there, you have the superb Gallie Craig café, again with stunning views.

And if you felt you still needed more….pop along back north to Port Logan where there is beautiful bay, a wee harbour and a lighthouse. Isn’t Dumfries & Galloway fabulous!

Ice Cream lovers…

I know you can’t believe it - me neither – it’s summer. ;-)

And summertime calls for summer activities – and that can only mean one things….ICE CREAM :D!

And just by sheer frozen fortune, we have some tummy rubbing, frozen head tingling, satisfaction-quenching, ice cream makers in the region – praise be!

Near Gatehouse of Fleet, the superb Cream o' Galloway not only does an amazing sticky toffee pudding ice cream (my personal fav.) but you can then run around like a loony in their activity centre afterwards, to burn off the calories – just mind on not to knock the other kids over eh!

DRUMMUIR FARM ICE CREAM near Dumfries, have over deelish 21 flavours - all made nearby with their fabulous herd of milk-producing girly coo’s.

Rum ‘n’ Raisin is my top choice there or, if you’re brave (greedy), you could always do battle with a Drummonster!!

Book lovers….

To be fair, you could not be in a better book lovers paradise-location than the Machars! The world famous book town of Wigtown has more book shops than you could shake a stick (a book shaped one) at!

So many books…and so little time to read them – unless you take a wee holiday at Oystercatcher.

There's the booktastic The Bookshop, the bibliotastic The Old Bank Book Shop, the hardbacktastic Well-Read Books of Wigtown Wigtown, the bookcakecoffeetastic ReadingLassesses where you can get a cracking coffee and amazing cakes!

Actually, I sit here exhausted after all those 'tastics I’ve just made up – phew! And I’ve only mentioned a fraction of the bookshops there!

And whatever you do, don’t miss the bookfestivaltastic annual Wigtown Book Festival.

Yes, we do know…you are spoilt for choice.

Retail lovers (shopaholics)…

So, if we’re talking about a fuller day out shopping spree, you could tootle along to Caledonia Park, at Gretna (no need to get married while you’re there – unless you take a turn on the day!). You could get yourself a kilt made, in your favourite tartan, from the renowned Anderson Kilts, Dumfries.

And then there’s the fabulous Bladnoch Distillery where you can go for a tour and then buy a gift for him / her or even you! But if you were feeling earthly, you could always have a claytastic look around the Lighthouse Pottery at Portpatrick.

Need more suggestions….please get in touch.

Family day out lovers....

Apart from being a serene and stunning seaside harbour village, Isle of Whithorn is close enough to some fabulous family day attractions.

Get the kids to make some chocolate at The Cocoabean Company, Twynholm – and then you could eat it. Take a journey into space and time at the amazing Dark Space Planetarium, Kirkcudbright. Or have an activity (and coffee & cakey) day out at Mabie-Farm Park or go mountain biking in the nearby Mabie Forest.

Plenty more to see and do, where those ideas came from…
