When I said I was off to Cape Verde most people said where is that?!

Often referred to as the African Caribbean, Cape Verde is group of 10 islands off the coast of Africa. They sit approx. 1500 miles south of the Canary Islands so from the UK it is a 5.5 - 6 hour flight and with an average temperature of around 25 degrees it is a destination to consider if you are after some winter sun!!

The Island of Sal is one of the most popular islands for holidays. As you might expect the airport is small and as soon as you head out on the one main road that runs the length of the island you will see that the island is still largely undeveloped. Dotted along the coast you will find a variety of hotels and on the tip of the island is Santa Maria, Sal’s busiest town which is home to an 8km beach with local restaurants, craft shops and watersports stores.

The main attractions are the weather, the white sandy beaches and the trade winds which make it perfect for water sports like windsurfing. In terms of sight seeing outside of Santa Maria, you have the Salt Lake, various boat trips and diving so if you like to get out and about and have lots to do it may not be the place for you!!

Departing Birmingham Airport anytime soon?!

Work is ongoing on upgrading the airport terminal and the security facilities and from the check-in areas until you get through into the departure lounge. This didn’t impact on check-in but the estimated queuing time to clear security yesterday at 6:30am was 60 minutes!!

I paid £6 for a fast pass and had cleared security in 10 minutes but even with the fast pass there are no guarantees on how long it will take so best tip I can give you is to be prepared and allow plenty of time ….. especially if you want to grab something to eat or visit duty free before you fly!!
