Competitions aren't just a pastime; they're where our creativity shines. Our team thrives on dynamic brainstorming sessions, interpreting diverse cultures, and crafting designs specifically tailored to their environment. International competitions have been our playground lately, and our achievements speak volumes.

We've clinched victories in international competitions, including a notable win in Poland and currently awaiting results from Dubai. Past ventures led us to Athens and Venice, where our architectural prowess stood out. Our competition portfolio isn't just a showcase of talent; it's a testament to our belief in crafting context-specific designs.

Architecture should echo the geography and spirit of the land it inhabits—I'm vehemently against the 'one-size-fits-all' approach. Each place has its unique identity, and our designs honor that. While I believe in modernity, it shouldn't overshadow a building's character. Unfortunately, the trend seems to sacrifice diversity for a cookie-cutter culture that lacks appreciation for uniqueness.

Speaking of projects defining this ethos, our Barn Conversion project exemplifies this dedication. Stay tuned for the intricate details!

Client stories shape our journey, each with its unique challenges and triumphs. At 151 Granby Street, our client's story mirrors the essence of many commercial endeavours on struggling high streets. The client faced a critical juncture—a shop space housing an inactive laundrette, a tenant behind on rent payments, and an apprehension to transform amid uncertainties.

Initially resistant to change, the client hesitated to embrace the transformation due to fear of losing the existing tenant. It took several months of discussions and meetings to align her vision with the potential we envisioned for the space. As we navigated through this process, she gradually recognized the immense possibilities our transformation held for the building.

Witnessing the impact of our work on the ground floor sparked a significant shift in her perspective. She not only embraced the changes but also expanded the project's scope to include the upper floor, aiming to make it more accessible and inviting for future occupants. This transformation journey showcases the power of collaboration and vision, turning fear into enthusiasm and paving the way for a more vibrant, functional space.

Our homes should mirror our lives, not confine them. At CAS, we're all about liberating spaces, showing that your home can be a canvas for your full expression. A simple interior redesign can redefine how you inhabit your space - a transformation that's more vital now than ever.

Signal Road in Grantham exemplifies this ethos. We embarked on reimagining a sizable two-story house, initially with an outdated layout. The challenge? Readdressing an old-fashioned setup - separate bathrooms and toilets, lack of en suites, and oversized, soulless rooms. Our goal was to infuse modern living into this space, designed for a family of three children, one being a teenager.

What emerged was a remarkable transformation: four bedrooms on the first floor, two main bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a well-proportioned main bathroom, and thoughtful storage solutions, including built-in walk-in wardrobes. Downstairs, we intervened in an existing extension, optimising proportions and insulation. By incorporating a movable wall and full-height folding doors, we expanded the entertainment area while maintaining privacy and room proportions.

This project epitomises our mission - to craft homes that resonate with modern living, spaces that rejuvenate, and environments that reflect your needs and desires. Your home isn't just a space; it's where you recharge, find solace, and express yourself freely.

Embracing diversity isn't just a motto—it's at the core of our studio's strength. Meet our team: they come from Italy, Romania, France, Germany, England, Sri Lanka, and the Czech Republic. We cherish this cultural mosaic, believing that creativity blossoms in diverse environments. It's about different styles, interpretations, and ways of conceiving spaces.

Our workspace is a melting pot of ideas because we cater to clients from varied backgrounds, many not originally from the UK. This diversity fuels our adaptability—we craft remarkably flexible designs, tailoring environments to suit everyone. Dealing with unique circumstances becomes our forte, thanks to our inherent flexibility and open-minded approach.

At the heart of it all is our belief that this diversity isn't just a strength but a cornerstone of our success. It's about creating the perfect environment for every client, no matter their background or circumstances.

Delving into history is at the heart of our commercial architectural projects. Take the 12 Market Place shopfront in Grantham - a perfect example of how historical research elevates success. When dealing with historic buildings, initial research becomes the cornerstone. We hunt for photographic evidence, written accounts, even engravings or paintings. The Old Bell Hotel in Derby stands as a testament; only engravings and paintings revealed its pre-20th century transformation.

Understanding a building's evolution is crucial. Sometimes, a building's history isn't immediately evident in its fabric due to numerous transformations. This is where meticulous research - archaeological, building records, and visual - becomes vital for project success. We've seen firsthand how this research can make or break a project. In Grantham, for instance, a row of buildings sought to restore historic shop fronts. While two lacked evidence, our historical digging suggested hidden remnants behind a boxed-in facade on the third.

Our library research uncovered the original shop front's look, aligning with our belief that more existed behind the fascia. Success! Upon contractor engagement, we unveiled more to save and preserve than anticipated, much to the client's delight. Additionally, uncovering a capital hacked off over 150 years ago was a deeply emotional yet satisfying journey, culminating in designing a new stone capital. It's moments like these that highlight the immense value of historical research in crafting architectural success stories.

Balancing creativity and practicality in architectural projects? Here are 5 key principles straight from the architect's desk:

1️. Liveability First: Create a space you truly live in, not just a picture-perfect idea. A realistically lived-in look beats a sterile, minimalistic vibe. Comfort matters—you're not in a hotel; you're in your home.

2. Know Your Space: Dream big, but stay grounded. Recognize your building's potential. Work with professionals who can help unveil and amplify that potential—like us at Conception Architect Studio.

3. Be Realistic: Spatial awareness matters. Sometimes, expectations can clash with reality. Get expert guidance; an architect can help navigate what's feasible and interpret your vision realistically.

4. Light Matters: Conscious or not, natural light shapes a space. Embrace it—it's a game-changer for well-being. Combine it with smart artificial lighting to work wonders, even in cozy spaces.

5. Boldness is Key: Don't shy away from uniqueness—be it shapes, colors, or textures. Your space should reflect your personality boldly. Let your vision and your architect's merge into a shared, distinctive environment.

Remember, the secret to a successful architectural project lies in respect and uniqueness. Each project is as distinct as the individuals behind them. No replication, just tailored solutions that match your happiness, not your friend Mary's. Your space, your vision - let's make it happen together.

Revolutionising London's spaces isn't about flashy announcements or extravagant projects - it's about the spaces everyday people inhabit. At Oliphant Road, our approach isn't about massive basements for the elite; it's about enhancing the spaces you and I live and work in. We don't require million-dollar investments from our clients; instead, we work with what's there, making significant changes with modest investments. Our clients range from owners of grand historic halls to those in compact 700 sqft homes, and we cater for them all, designing their spaces with their unique needs in mind.

Our shared vision isn't about unrealistic grandeur; it's about understanding our clients' true aspirations and making them a reality. That's what sets us apart. In a city where space is at a premium, we innovate by focusing on volume rather than square footage. High ceilings and underutilised corridors in old properties? That's where our craft shines. We transform these spaces, maximising their potential without necessarily extending the properties. Creating welcoming and comforting homes in London's limited spaces? Absolutely possible, and we're making it happen.

Read below the following narrative composed by Dave, detailing his personal experiences.

When I was about 18 or 19 I was working in a bar in ST Albans, my home city. I knew that it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but on the other hand I didn't know what I wanted to do. As so many have done in the past, I decided to get a trade, and so applied to college to study plumbing, leading to (over the course of the next three years) me becoming a fully qualified plumber. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the theoretical side of the profession, I found myself panicking that I had left leaks at every job I went to. This was not helped by my apprenticeship being with a person that had employed two apprentices (including myself) as cheap labour, without also having an experienced plumber to show us where we were going wrong. This led to me falling out of love with plumbing as a profession, but realising that the construction industry was where my passion laid.

Skip forward to when I am 23. I am looking at various University courses to see what felt right. I knew I didn't have the qualifications to study architecture, but knew this was the direction that I needed to look in. This was when I found Architectural Technology. It was perfect. It satisfied my love for design whilst also allowing me to look at exactly how buildings were put together, and how they could be improved with the smallest details. I spent the next four years at Nottingham Trent University (including a year in industry) gaining my Bachelors degree.

After I had left University and come back from America, where I had spent the summer working at a summer camp, I immediately started looking for jobs. My partner (now wife) was based in Derby, so my search centred around the East Midlands. After several rejections I was offered a job by Valeria at Conception Architects. Conception was (and has remained) a small practice, as this allows us to dedicate as much time as possible to each project, a necessity when working in conservation.

What I love about the work at Conception is the variety of work. Traditional shopfront reinstatement design and detailing requires a level of detail rarely required elsewhere, and similarly the construction methods, materials and expertise required harkens back to a time when skilled joiners and tradesmen put their heart and soul into their work. This is a practice that we absolutely insist on with all projects, and always results in exemplary finished products. Similarly with all other facets of heritage work, we must assess, detail and report everything to a very high level of detail in order to assure each project is completed to the highest level of detail.

This level of detail also relates to our residential projects. Primarily centred in London, I take pride in the fact that we take part in every project from inception to completion, and take all the time necessary to ensure that any addition or reconfiguration has been designed to best appreciate the existing building and spaces.

Our heritage restoration journey spans over a decade, stemming from a collaboration with Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2005. By the early 2010s, our commitment evolved into a national leadership role, dedicated to restoring architectural marvels through Seekas and Heritage Action Zone initiatives.

But what's the core philosophy driving this effort? It's the recognition that our high streets aren't solely commercial spaces - they're repositories of history and culture. Preserving heritage isn't a mere nod to the past; it's a magnetic force that draws people in. Stepping into a cherished historic environment offers an unparalleled experience. In such a setting, spending becomes an expression of joy - a cup of coffee, a unique fashion piece, or a vibrant bouquet of flowers.

At the heart of our heritage initiative lies a potent idea: the fusion of history and economic growth. The Italian Institute of Culture stands as a testament to this fusion—a place where heritage seamlessly intertwines with prosperity, inspiring the revival of cultural treasures and sparking economic vitality.

Thriving in the Competition Arena: Our Unique Approach to 'The House of the Future'

Competition is where we truly come alive, where we challenge ourselves, and where we expand the boundaries of our knowledge. It's about taking our skills and unwavering attention to detail to uncharted territory. We experienced this firsthand when we took on the competition in Poland's sacred mountain and achieved remarkable success. The same exhilaration filled us when we embarked on the House of the Future competition in Dubai, Middle East.

Our strength lies in our profound understanding of the culture, the dynamics, and the heritage of the place. The House of the Future must pay homage to tradition and respect the roots of the land it's built on. This is what sets us apart. We firmly believe that heritage is not a relic of the past but a treasure for the future. We apply the same principles and reverence we would to Western or other cultural heritages to Middle Eastern influences, both tangible and intangible.

Our ability to seamlessly blend history, heritage, and diverse cultural elements while crafting interiors and exteriors that project into the future is our forte. This unique talent, appreciated by both our existing and new clients, allows us to create distinctive, forward-looking spaces that are firmly rooted in their cultural context.

Transforming Interiors: From Blank Canvas to Coastal Dream

At Conception Architect studio, we consider every project a blank canvas where history and our clients' visions set the stage. Our unique approach hinges on listening intently to our clients' needs, acting as their interpreters to provide answers that only our knowledge can offer, tailored to their precise requirements.

When it comes to interior design, we work backward, beginning with the ultimate goal in mind. We steer clear of dehumanising standard luxury Dubai interiors, prioritising texture, volumes, and proportion to celebrate the richness of our architectural heritage.

Enter 'The Cornish Getaway,' a project brimming with character. This seaside retreat was a thrilling challenge, with a couple seeking to amplify the coastal vibe. We embraced the task by infusing the design with a symphony of blues, whites, and washed wood textures, weaving a distinct seaside narrative throughout the interior. Neutrals like whites, beige, and ivory create a soothing backdrop, while a powerful blue accent runs like a thread, making this project not just unique but perfectly in tune with its coastal surroundings.

Our art of interior transformation celebrates history, individuality, and a deep respect for the setting.

Defining Luxury Through Attention to Detail

Our commercial transformations are a testament to the art of precision and luxury. Every project, whether it's the exterior or the interior, is an embodiment of meticulous attention to detail. We spare no effort in ensuring that the materials we use are not just appropriate and relevant but also the absolute best for the task at hand.

Take St. Helens House Interiors, for example. Situated in a Grade One listed building in Derby, this project exemplifies the pinnacle of precision and attention to detail. The interiors, designed to be the epitome of 18th-century luxury when the house was first conceived, demanded a level of accuracy that sets it apart.

From recreating the intricate panelling to the delicate stuccos, and the ornate ceilings adorned with guild foil, every element was meticulously crafted to revive one of the most sumptuous interiors of Regency England. This commitment to perfection is what defines luxury in our commercial transformations.

What Sets Us Apart - Design Philosophy

At our firm, our design philosophy is built upon a core principle: a profound respect for the buildings, their historical significance, and the unique settings they occupy. This commitment becomes especially pronounced when it comes to our work in traditional high streets. We specialise in the meticulous reinstatement and repair of the distinctive architectural features that once defined Victorian and Georgian high streets, imbuing them with character and individuality.

Our approach is underpinned by a rigorous dedication to research and an unwavering attention to detail. We invest substantial time in thoroughly analysing each source of material available. This includes extensive studies of the buildings themselves, exhaustive research in local libraries and study centres, and an in-depth examination of photographic and graphic records, including paintings and etchings. Our goal is to ensure that our shop front designs pay the utmost respect to the original aesthetics of the area.

This unwavering commitment to precision and detail means that each of our projects carries its distinct character and uniqueness. It distinguishes us as leaders in the restoration of architectural features, with a particular focus on shopfronts. In the UK, our commitment to detail extends beyond timber to encompass all elements of the surrounding architecture. We meticulously research and source the right stones for restoration, incorporate glazed bricks, utilise granite, and craft timber storefronts that faithfully mirror photographic and graphic records from our comprehensive research.

Unlike the one-size-fits-all approach we've observed in the industry, we champion thoroughness and respect for the historical context in every project we undertake. Our role as consultants to numerous local authorities has revealed that not everyone shares our unwavering commitment to these principles.

Optimising Life Through Architectural Excellence

Every project at Conception Architect studio is an opportunity to optimise daily life in residential spaces. We take immense pride in our attention to detail and client-centric approach, ensuring every architectural fabric is utilised to its fullest potential. Whether we're revamping existing structures, enhancing interior designs, or crafting from scratch, our focus is always on improving the overall setting.

One standout example is our project for the England cricketer and news commentator Graeme Swan and his growing family. The Sunday Times even covered it, commending our meticulous architectural language, room proportions, and the overall design's alignment with the needs and desires of this young family with three little ones.

We're not just thrilled to have worked with a prominent figure like Graeme Swan but also proud that we exceeded our client's expectations. Our commitment to enhancing both the residents' well-being and their surroundings is a testament to our dedication. These details don't go unnoticed, as evidenced by the feature in the Sunday Times.

Our Heritage Modernisation Shopfront Projects: Bridging Past and Present

In our mission to restore the architectural features of historic buildings, we're not just preserving the past; we're building a bridge to the present and future. The post-war years left high streets characterised by deep illuminated signage and uninspiring metal or UPVC shop fronts. Our work is all about rekindling the character and distinction of these cherished places.

Take a walk down Westgate in Grantham, and you'll witness the transformation of 30, 39, 74, 75 and 77 Westgate, to name just a few addresses. These were once neglected, lost in time frontages, but our intervention has revitalised them and in turn this historic town. Our focus on reinstating the intricate historic timber shopfronts has injected texture and character in the High Street, creating an atmosphere that resonates with the heritage of this town.

On Westgate we've breathed new life into what used to be the original Georgian marketplace. The backdrop we've provided is now home to a vibrant array of shops and cafes, reinvigorating the heart of this distinctive English town. Grantham, with its notable inhabitant Sir Isaac Newton, deserved a revival, and we're proud to have played a role in restoring its charm.

Our heritage reinstatement projects are not just about preserving history; they're about celebrating the past while shaping a brighter future. We invite you to stroll through these historic streets, where the past and present seamlessly blend to create an enriched, vibrant town centre.

Our Winning Entry for the Jezowa Woda Competition!

Participating in the Jezowa Woda Mountain Shelter competition was a unique challenge. We immersed ourselves in the spirit of the sacred woods, dedicated to Devana, the goddess of nature in Slavic mythology. Our winning design blended seamlessly with the surroundings, incorporating two floors nestled into the ground, covered by a lush green roof, with viewing terraces offering stunning views of the valley.

As the building raise, it emerges gradually, using local materials, spiralling up to the summit. There, a three-star hotel, a restaurant and a coffee shop provide fantastic facilities for guests who can then climb further to gaze at the night skies and valley from an elevated position. The building culminates in a structure in the shape of the moon housing a professional observatory, providing an incredible stargazing experience.

This project allowed us to blend innovation with nature's beauty, and we're thrilled to have been successful in this international competition. Thank you to Fundacja IDEANOVA for the opportunity. We are looking forward to the next chapter.

Turning Ordinary Spaces into Extraordinary Ones: Bramfield Road Story

Transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary ones is our passion at Conception Architects Studio. Take, for example, the captivating story of Bramfield Road, a project that's particularly close to our hearts. This journey began with a young couple who discovered our services through word-of-mouth recommendations. They were not just impressed by what we were doing but, more importantly, by how we were doing it.

Our approach to each project is highly tailored, taking into account the unique circumstances, the personalities of our clients, and the distinctiveness of the buildings we work on. As we embarked on creating the perfect apartment for this young couple, life brought a beautiful surprise – they were expecting their first child. This turned our collaboration into a journey of transformation, from a young couple to a young expecting couple, and then into a young couple with a small child.

The building itself is a traditional London ground floor flat in the Northcote area of Clapham, a place that exudes excitement and dynamism. While the building is part of a traditional London terrace, immaculately maintained, it wasn't initially suitable for the growing family's needs. However, with our creative touch, we managed to make the most of the limited space, both internally and externally. We created a multifunctional space with distinct and serene areas that could expand or contract as needed, especially to meet the Clients varying privacy requirements throughout the day.

One of the most notable achievements in this project was providing the much-needed storage space, a rarity in apartments of this kind in London. We utilised every available part of the layout, including the height. Additionally, they had a unique requirement for storing large pieces of luggage, which we successfully accommodated.

The result is a space that embodies the unique needs and aspirations of our clients, a space that reflects our commitment to turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
